A John Waters Christmas | Old Dutch Church

A John Waters Christmas: Live in KingstonHelp! It’s Christmas! To hell with Santa, Rudolph, Mrs. Claus and, yes, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, too! We’re not sitting on that man’s lap this year! Nosirree, not getting down on our knees for anybody either. All you need to get through this holiday season is John Waters; St. Nick the Dick, Father Fistmas, Kris Kringleberries! Ho ho ho was never like this! Once again Waters is touring the country on his slippery sled of sewage with his comedy bag of tricks, handing out filthy sticks and stones to bad little nonbinary boys and girls and everybody in between and beyond. Ninety minutes of Christmas jeer and holiday beatings! Go ahead, teabag that tree with your own balls and then knock it over on yourself on purpose! Scream, drag queens and kings, scream! Yes! We’re all getting cha-cha heel s this year! Postage-due Christmas cards, too. We want gift-wrapped get-out-of-jail holiday coupons! Mistle-toejam! As Dawn Davenport would say, We asked and we’d better get!” Happy hole-iday! Merry Diss-mas! We’re the gift that keeps on desperate living. It’s a John Waters Christmas and you’d better watch out! ******************************************************************************************************* A John Waters Christmas contains explicit and potentially controversial content; all attendees should be 18+. The original church structure, built on the present site in 1660, actually was one corner of the Stockade which Peter Stuyvesant ordered built as fortification. Wiltwyck later became the village of Kingston after the British took over the colony and renamed it New York. The original structure was largely destroyed by fire in the Esopus Indian raid of 1663. Rebuilt and enlarged several times, the church was again burned during the American Revolution by British forces in October of 1777. During the Revolution, the church, and its congregation, aligned itself with the rebel or patriot cause. As a result, in November of 1782, Gen. George Washington visited the church. A hand-written letter by Washington regarding his reception at the church is proudly on display in the Narthex of the church. It is significant to note that during the entire eight years of the American Revolution, this was Washington’s only reference to a religious institution. Over the years, many ecumenical services have been held at Old Dutch Church to commemorate significant events. In 1901, the church held one of the official funeral services for President William McKinley after his assassination in Buffalo, New York. Within hours of the sinking of the Titanic on April 12, 1912, a memorial service for the victims of the disaster was held in our Sanctuary. And most recently, on the evening of September 11, 2001, Old Dutch Church was again the site of a community outpouring of shock and grief as we struggled to cope with the attacks on our country. In 1932, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, then Governor of the State of New York, addressed the church at the 150th commemorative service of the visit of General George Washington. Among the other more recent notable speakers who have presented at church functions are Congressman Hamilton Fish, Jr., Norman Vincent Peale, Brigadier General James E. Cartwright, USMC, Assistant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and historian Heywood Hale Broun. The Old Dutch Church is not only interested in preserving and educating the public about its own history but frequently takes a pro-active role in protecting the secular history of the community as well. For example, when Kingston’s old City Hall became a virtually derelict building, church members removed the surviving bas-relief plaster lunettes depicting the city’s history to the basement of the church, thus preventing their total destruction. Now, with the financial help of Old Dutch Church as well as many others, the lunettes have been refurbished and returned to City Hall which was renovated in 2000. In 2008, Old Dutch Church was declared a National Historic Landmark by the Federal government and in 2009 we celebrated our 350th Anniversary! Information Source: Big Gay Hudson Valley | eventbrite

Nq Arbuckle Holiday Show | The Broom Factory

NQ ARBUCKLE HOLIDAY SHOW at The Broom Factory Doors 7pm Show 7:30pm All Ages It's that time of year again when we are lucky to raise our spirits with a performance by the one and only NQ Arbuckle band! Reassuringly familiar, if a little bit flashier, the longsuffering but thankful NQ Arbuckle wins another battle against the urge to cut and run with “Love Songs For The Long Game,” his first new music in six years. For an artist whose songs have always grappled, at least in part, with the panic that comes with both asking and answering the question “Why am I doing this?” NQ Arbuckle has found his place writing sea shanties songs for drinking on dry land, for our labours of love large and small. These are songs to magic our straw into gold, songs to keep the dread at bay. Songs that keep promises, long after those ships have sailed. Not fully nostalgic, not simply regretful, “Love Songs For The Long Game” is for those who seek balance between constancy and recklessness, between last call and first light. The song, like the rest of NQ Arbuckle’s catalogue, is both a grand gesture and a humble offering, honouring our commitments to family, to love and to keeping that creative spark flickering. This is no bird’s eye view, but a view from the ground, in all its messy wonder. NQ Arbuckle is a Toronto songwriter and namesake of a twice JUNO Award nominated Toronto band. His 2002 Six Shooter cult classic debut Hanging The Battle-Scarred Pinata, produced by Luke Doucet, launched a fervent fanbase devoted to shouting his lyrics back at him, an impressive collection of print clippings, and a sporadic touring career in which NQ Arbuckle careened from Italy to Northern Alberta, Huntsville to Nashville. On “Love Songs For The Long Game,” NQ Arbuckle’s newest song, Doucet returns as producer. Recorded at The Bathouse in Kingston, ON and mixed by Howie Beck, new music also features playing by original members of NQ Arbuckle band Peter Kesper and Mark Kesper, and superlative keyboard player Robbie Grunwald. "Meet the Artist" with Deb Todd Wheeler | The Center for Photography at Woodstock

Kingston
Arts
Fine Art
On Thursday, December 12, we welcome Deb Todd Wheeler to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Over the past several years, Deb Todd Wheeler’s artwork has pulled her out of the depths of grief, after the tragic and sudden deaths of her son Lucas and brother Rob. She finds herself returning to Lucas’ bedroom, watching the light pass over his books, his bed, his old sneakers, and all the other residual matter of his brief life, hoping for something to open in the return. In this talk, she will share the photographic nature of her expanded practice, and the fraught delight that accompanies her struggle for something beyond illumination. Although many of her public offerings are protected by a no photography rule, her studio practice engages with untethered time and analog processes -the spare mechanics of pinhole and contact printing- finding a forced stillness that hosts unresolvable yet beautiful collisions with the past. Wheeler will have Book of Walks available for sale throughout the evening. Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation. Deb Todd Wheeler is a multi-disciplinary artist in the Boston area who creates photographic experiences and spaces of radical generosity for emotional transformation and reclamation. Her projects take the form of interactive installations, objects, and participatory happenings, creating provisional communities through gathering, grief work, and holding commemorative space. In a recent project, she guided hundreds of participants (individually, over many years) on a geo-located audio-walk in the partially remediated landscape of Lost Pond, which you can read about in her recently released Book of Walks. She is on the MFAV graduate faculty at Clark University, a Deep Listening facilitator, and a founding member of the LENNYcollective, which provides unusual opportunities for amateur musicians of all ages and levels. Her artwork is represented by Ellen Miller Gallery in Boston. Banner image: Deb Todd Wheeler. Information Source: The Center for Photography at Woodstock | eventbrite

Vassil Girginov: Sustainable Sport – An Impossible Theorem? | Ground floor lecture theatre, Michael Sterling Building

Jan 15, 2025 (UTC+0)
Kingston
Sports & Fitness
Professor Vassil Girginov embarks on a journey to explore the sustainability of the current model of sport. For centuries, societies have struggled to ensure equal access to sport due to its perceived health, social, and economic benefits. Yet, by turning the practice of sport into a human right and its purported benefits into a norm and a relatively cheap policy option to tackle a range of welfare issues, have we set ourselves on an impossible mission and set of expectations? Growth is a key constitutive word in the strategies of national and international sport organisations worldwide as they aspire to increase participation, medals, and revenue. However, with growth come enhanced levels of complexity due to increased interactions between participants, the environment, and sport providers, as well as the need to use an ever-greater supply of natural resources. This quest for growth occurs in parallel with a rising awareness about sustainability. Sustainable sport is concerned with a composite problem posed by the tensions between the unfettered advancement of its current model and the need for its sustainable development. In this lecture Professor Girginov explores the tensions between sustainability and growth and argues that the most pertinent challenge facing sustainable sport practices is an ideological one, concerning the overlaying of a sustainability veneer over the growth model of sport. In turn, this serves as a distraction from the fundamental need to think in new ways about sport. Professor Girginov hopes you will join him for a drinks reception after his lecture. What is an Inaugural Lecture? An Inaugural Lecture marks a significant milestone in any academic career. Join us as we celebrate the extraordinary careers and research excellence of our academic colleagues, recently joined or promoted to Professor. Shakespeare By the Vines: Macbeth Tickets on sale now via ACTHub One couple’s ruthless thirst for power turns nature upside down in Shakespeare’s bloody tragedy Macbeth. The Hub transforms into the eerie beauty of the Scottish Highlands as the infamous witches weave their dark prophecies and Macbeth rises to power amidst a whirlwind of murder, secrets, and the occult, with a dynamic cast (and maybe a few audience members) who will bring the play to life. Gather your friends and strap in for a night of greed, ambition, and deception. Whether you’re a Shakespeare aficionado or new to the Bard, don’t miss this chance to experience Shakespeare’s shortest, sharpest, and bloodiest play like never before, as nature and theatre collide. Expect audience interaction in this performance. This is Shakespeare up close and personal! We encourage audience members of all ages, and love introducing younger audience members to the joys of watching Shakespeare. Parents should note that this production is faithful to the original text and contains some adult themes (battles, murder and the like). Brought to you in partnership with The Q and directed by Jordan Best. Lakespeare is an independent theatre company on a mission to make high-quality theatre accessible to Canberrans and beyond. Visit our webpage closer to show time for more information about the show, the cast and what we do. And don't forget to follow us on Facebook or Instagram. Our summer season always involves as many free outdoor shows as we can afford to put on. Sales from ticketed events partially fund these, but crowd-sourced donations also help make this possible.
