Geoffroy at The Broom Factory Kingston | The Broom Factory
Nov 23, 2024 (UTC-5)
Kingston
Geoffroy Saturday Nov 23rd at The Broom Factory Doors 7pm Show 7:30pm All Ages Geoffroy is an essential and still emerging voice in Canadian music. Now three LPs into a career that has solidified him as one of Quebec’s best artists, the Montreal-born songwriter and producer takes the next step internationally with the release of fourth full-length Good Boy. Almost 10 years removed from his first release, this project was sparked with the intention of creating Geoffroy’s most authentic work to date, blending organic instrumentation and electronic elements into a bright and rich album filled with diverse sounds, a collection of songs that moves beyond the brooding depth that has defined recent works. Here there is room for an atmosphere of light, appreciation, and well-being. Music for warm days and nights, imbued with rich experiences for those who immerse themselves. The album is the latest in a stellar run of LPs, including debut Coastline (2017), 1952 (2019) and Live Slow Die Wise (2022). Each album has reflected a different tone and period in the artist’s life and his evolution and experimentation with different sonic pallets. In this case, Good Boy sees Geoffroy look back and collaborate with longtime production partners Clément Leduc and Gabriel Gagnon, but also incorporate a diverse collection of new background musicians and singers that brings the album to life in vibrant color. That diversity was driven by a gradual shift in Geoffroy’s influences, having spent recent years immersing himself in the worlds of cumbia music and a range of other latin and african rhythmic styles, that melded with his traditional singer-songwriter form to create something that feels truly international. In fact the record’s narrative was inspired by a trip to Mexico where he befriended - and ultimately adopted - a shelter dog named Papi, bringing him from the streets of Mexico City to Montreal. Papi serves as the mascot for the LP, but more importantly acts as an overarching metaphor for being lost, but ultimately found. Asked to reflect on the change in perspective that accompanied the transition from his previous musical era into this one, Geoffroy spoke to the clarity he experienced in terms of his own agenda in the creation of music. “Live Slow Die Wise had a slower pace and I was eager to step away from the nostalgia and melancholy I had visited and analyzed plenty in the past,” Geoffroy reflects. “I did what felt natural, a feel-good album (I think) that shed the weight of the other ones. I feel I’m getting closer to the sound I’m looking for, though I might be chasing something that’s faster than me.

A John Waters Christmas | Old Dutch Church
Dec 16, 2024 (UTC-5)
Kingston
A John Waters Christmas: Live in KingstonHelp! It’s Christmas! To hell with Santa, Rudolph, Mrs. Claus and, yes, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, too!
We’re not sitting on that man’s lap this year!
Nosirree, not getting down on our knees for anybody either. All you need to get through this holiday season is John Waters; St. Nick the Dick, Father Fistmas, Kris Kringleberries! Ho ho ho was never like this! Once again Waters is touring the country on his slippery sled of sewage with his comedy bag of tricks, handing out filthy sticks and stones to bad little nonbinary boys and girls and everybody in between and beyond. Ninety minutes of Christmas jeer and holiday beatings! Go ahead, teabag that tree with your own balls and then knock it over on yourself on purpose! Scream, drag queens and kings, scream! Yes! We’re all getting cha-cha heel s this year! Postage-due Christmas cards, too. We want gift-wrapped get-out-of-jail holiday coupons! Mistle-toejam! As Dawn Davenport would say, We asked and we’d better get!” Happy hole-iday! Merry Diss-mas! We’re the gift that keeps on desperate living. Atwater SkincareUlster County TourismThe Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community CenterKingston's Old Dutch ChurchWorkshop Art Fabrication LLCO+ Festival KingstonPeter Lyons + Mike FinkAbout The Old Dutch ChurchOften referred to as “The Cathedral of Kingston,” the Old Dutch Church was a part of the Dutch Colonial village of Wiltwyck which was a trading outpost in the colony of New Netherland. The original church structure, built on the present site in 1660, actually was one corner of the Stockade which Peter Stuyvesant ordered built as fortification. Wiltwyck later became the village of Kingston after the British took over the colony and renamed it New York. The original structure was largely destroyed by fire in the Esopus Indian raid of 1663. Rebuilt and enlarged several times, the church was again burned during the American Revolution by British forces in October of 1777.
During the Revolution, the church, and its congregation, aligned itself with the rebel or patriot cause. As a result, in November of 1782, Gen. George Washington visited the church. A hand-written letter by Washington regarding his reception at the church is proudly on display in the Narthex of the church. It is significant to note that during the entire eight years of the American Revolution, this was Washington’s only reference to a religious institution.
Over the years, many ecumenical services have been held at Old Dutch Church to commemorate significant events. In 1901, the church held one of the official funeral services for President William McKinley after his assassination in Buffalo, New York. Within hours of the sinking of the Titanic on April 12, 1912, a memorial service for the victims of the disaster was held in our Sanctuary. And most recently, on the evening of September 11, 2001, Old Dutch Church was again the site of a community outpouring of shock and grief as we struggled to cope with the attacks on our country.
In 1932, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, then Governor of the State of New York, addressed the church at the 150th commemorative service of the visit of General George Washington. Among the other more recent notable speakers who have presented at church functions are Congressman Hamilton Fish, Jr., Norman Vincent Peale, Brigadier General James E. Cartwright, USMC, Assistant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and historian Heywood Hale Broun.
The Old Dutch Church is not only interested in preserving and educating the public about its own history but frequently takes a pro-active role in protecting the secular history of the community as well. For example, when Kingston’s old City Hall became a virtually derelict building, church members removed the surviving bas-relief plaster lunettes depicting the city’s history to the basement of the church, thus preventing their total destruction. Now, with the financial help of Old Dutch Church as well as many others, the lunettes have been refurbished and returned to City Hall which was renovated in 2000.
In 2008, Old Dutch Church was declared a National Historic Landmark by the Federal government and in 2009 we celebrated our 350th Anniversary!

Vassil Girginov: Sustainable Sport – An Impossible Theorem? | Ground floor lecture theatre, Michael Sterling Building
Jan 15, 2025 (UTC+0)
Kingston
Professor Vassil Girginov embarks on a journey to explore the sustainability of the current model of sport. For centuries, societies have struggled to ensure equal access to sport due to its perceived health, social, and economic benefits. Yet, by turning the practice of sport into a human right and its purported benefits into a norm and a relatively cheap policy option to tackle a range of welfare issues, have we set ourselves on an impossible mission and set of expectations? Growth is a key constitutive word in the strategies of national and international sport organisations worldwide as they aspire to increase participation, medals, and revenue. However, with growth come enhanced levels of complexity due to increased interactions between participants, the environment, and sport providers, as well as the need to use an ever-greater supply of natural resources. This quest for growth occurs in parallel with a rising awareness about sustainability. Sustainable sport is concerned with a composite problem posed by the tensions between the unfettered advancement of its current model and the need for its sustainable development. In this lecture Professor Girginov explores the tensions between sustainability and growth and argues that the most pertinent challenge facing sustainable sport practices is an ideological one, concerning the overlaying of a sustainability veneer over the growth model of sport. In turn, this serves as a distraction from the fundamental need to think in new ways about sport. Professor Girginov hopes you will join him for a drinks reception after his lecture. What is an Inaugural Lecture? An Inaugural Lecture marks a significant milestone in any academic career. Join us as we celebrate the extraordinary careers and research excellence of our academic colleagues, recently joined or promoted to Professor.
