Barrington Books Presents Dave Barry, Class Clown | St. Andrew’s School
May 16, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Barrington
Barrington Books proudly presents An Evening With Dave Barry in the Keats Theater at St Andrews School in Barrington, RI. Get ready to laugh as Dave Barry tells us about his life as CLASS CLOWN in a moderatred discussion for his new memoir.
Barrington Books, voted Best Independent Bookstore Statewide by Rhode Island Monthly’s Reader’s Poll time and again, is known far and wide for its knowledgeable book-loving staff, vast selection of high-quality books, toys and gifts, as well as its vibrant community events.
All tickets include a copy of the hardcover book, and admission for one person to lecture followed by book signing. Each attendee must have a ticket for admission. Reserve your spot today!
ABOUT THE BOOK:
America’s most beloved wiseass finally tells his life story with all the humor you’d expect from a man who made a career out of making fun of pretty much everything.
How does the son of a Presbyterian minister wind up winning a Pulitzer Prize for writing a wildly inaccurate newspaper column read by millions of people?
In
Class Clown
, Dave Barry takes us on a hilarious ride, starting with a childhood largely spent throwing rocks for entertainment—there was no internet—and preparing for nuclear war by hiding under a classroom desk. After literally getting elected class clown in high school, he went to college, where, as an English major, he read snippets of great literature when he was not busy playing in a rock band (it was the sixties).
He began his journalism career at a small-town Pennsylvania newspaper where he learned the most important rule of local journalism: never confuse a goose with a duck. His journey then took a detour into the business world, where as a writing consultant he spent years trying, with limited success, to get corporate folks to, for God’s sake, get the point. Somehow from there he wound up as a humor columnist for
The
Miami Herald
, where his boss was a wild man who encouraged him to write about anything that struck him as amusing and to never worry about alienating anyone.
His columns were not popular with everyone: He managed to alienate a vast army of Neil Diamond fans, and the entire state of Indiana. But he also developed a loyal following of readers who alerted him to the threat of exploding toilets, not to mention the fire hazards posed by strawberry pop-tarts and Rollerblade Barbie, which he demonstrated to the nation on the David Letterman show. He led his readers on a crusade against telemarketers that ultimately caused the national telemarketers association to stop answering its own phones because it was getting—irony alert—too many unwanted calls. He has also run for president multiple times, although so far without success.
He became a book author and joined a literary rock band, which was not good at playing music but did once perform with Bruce Springsteen, who sang backup to Dave. As for his literary merits, Dave writes: “I’ll never have the critical acclaim of, say, Marcel Proust. But was Marcel Proust ever on Carson? Did he ever steal a hotel sign for Oprah?”
Class Clown
isn’t just a memoir; it’s a vibrant celebration of a life rich with humor, absurdity, joy, and sadness. Dave says the most important wisdom imparted by his Midwestern parents was never to take anything too seriously. This laughter-filled book is proof that he learned that lesson well.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
The New York Times has pronounced
Dave Barry
"the funniest man in America." But of course that could have been on a slow news day when there wasn't much else fit to print. True, his bestselling collections of columns are legendary, but it is his wholly original books that reveal him as an American icon. Dave Barry Slept Here was his version of American history. Dave Barry Does Japan was a contribution to international peace and understanding from which Japan has not yet fully recovered. Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys is among the best-read volumes in rehab centers and prisons. Raised in a suburb of New York, educated in a suburb of Philadelphia, he lives now in a suburb of Miami. He is not, as he often puts it so poetically, making this up.

Book Description
From the #1
New York Times
bestselling author of two Oprah Book Club Picks—
She’s Come Undone
and
I Know This Much Is True
—Wally Lamb comes the propulsive story of a young father who, after an unbearable tragedy, reckons with the possibility of atonement for the unforgivable.
Corby Ledbetter is struggling. New fatherhood, the loss of his job, and a growing secret addiction have thrown his marriage to his beloved Emily into a tailspin. And that’s before he causes the tragedy that tears the family apart. Sentenced to prison, Corby struggles to survive life on the inside, where he bears witness to frightful acts of brutality but also experiences small acts of kindness and elemental kinship with a prison librarian who sees his light and some of his fellow offenders, including a tender-hearted cellmate and a troubled teen desperate for a role model. Buoyed by them and by his mother’s enduring faith in him, Corby begins to transcend the boundaries of his confinement, sustained by his hope that mercy and reconciliation might still be possible. Can his crimes ever be forgiven by those he loves?
Praise for Wally Lamb
“Lamb sheds light on the inhumanity and cruelty of the American prison system, while also offering glimmers of hope and friendship… There are no simple resolutions in this gripping drama, and Lamb offers plenty to ponder about guilt, innocence, rehabilitation, and forgiveness.” —
Booklist
“[A] heart-wrenching story of redemption… Lamb lays bare the vagaries of his protagonist’s life in accessible prose and concludes on a bittersweet note. This will please the author’s fans.”
—
Publishers Weekly
“A heartwrenching, moving tale about the power of forgiveness, resilience and growth.”
—
Woman's World
, "12 Most Anticipated Books of 2025"
"I was awestruck by this brilliant novel! I know that “authenticity” isn’t the sexiest takeaway, but on my honor, page after riveting page, I asked myself, “How did he know this? How is this so moving, so real, so close to the bone?” Bravo, Wally Lamb. Not that you needed another masterpiece to demonstrate your unerring eye, ear, and signature heart, but may I say
The River is Waiting
might crown them all.”
—Elinor Lipman, author of
Every Tom, Dick & Harry
and
Ms. Demeanor
"Time and time again, the amazing Wally Lamb’s imperfect people break our hearts and help us understand the unfathomable depths of guilt and grief as we look for light in the world."
—Alice Hoffman,
New York Times
bestselling author of The Practical Magic series
“
The River is Waiting
is an ambitious, affecting novel that’s not afraid to look directly at human suffering, and to map out the pain we inflict on others, and on ourselves. With an unflinching eye and an unsentimental compassion for his characters, Wally Lamb finds glimmers of hope and healing and decency in the darkest places."
