This initiative is a performance series dedicated to showcasing emerging artists skilled in various classical and contemporary South Asian art practices. About the Artists Pooja Sathe Kulkarni , founder and teacher at Mudra School of Dance, has trained in Kathak for over 20 years and currently mentors 60 students. She began her training at 12 under Guru Smt. Shilpa Kantak and has studied both Jaipur and Lucknow gharanas. She further honed her skills under Pt. Birju Maharajji, Saveeta Sharma, and Guru Sandhya Desai, and is currently pursuing her Masters under Guru Radhika and Eshani Sathe. A Nritya Visharad graduate from Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, she is a certified teacher and examiner. She also holds a Bachelor's in Management from the University of Mumbai. Suhithakumar Maannikkavasagam , a Bharatanatyam dancer from Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, trained under Bharathachoodamani Smt. Subithra Kirubakaran before continuing his studies with Harikishan S. Nair in Toronto. He has performed extensively in Sri Lanka, India, and Canada, earning the Kavitha Talent Award for Best Male Dancer from Sri Lanka's Ministry of Higher Education. The Art Gallery of Mississauga invites you to the opening reception of My Mother's Tongue, a group exhibition of contemporary art that investigates the suppression of language and identity across different cultures and histories. Join us for an afternoon to celebrate the exhibition opening alongside the artists and curator. Refreshments will be provided. Registration is recommended but not required. ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Throughout the centuries, from early colonialism to communist Eastern Europe and Apartheid South Africa, the powers that be banned Indigenous languages, stole land, and muted cultural identity. The history, language, and art of the colonized were usurped by what the aggressors deemed as politically and culturally appropriate, thus silencing any form of dissent. This led to a sense of mourning; an experience of loss and grief of not just the physical self, but also the spiritual self. My Mother’s Tongue looks at this silencing of different cultures, from South Korea and Canada through to South Africa and Pakistan. Through different artistic mediums, it exposes the exploitation and incarceration of people’s multi-dimensional identities. Language is passed down through generations of a culture’s history, ensuring its survival. The works in this exhibition explore how one navigates loss, disconnection, anger, and pain after their mother tongue has been silenced. This violent act is a recurring practice throughout history and continues to this day. Featuring works by artists Joi T. Arcand, Insoon Ha, Mohau Modisakeng, Baljit Singh, and James Webb, My Mother’s Tongue gives a platform to these voices that once were silenced, and a chance to reawaken them through art. This exhibition is made possible thanks to TD Bank Group through the Bank's Corporate Citizenship platform, the TD Ready Commitment. My Mother’s Tongue asks: What happens when cultural inheritance is stolen? The artists in this exhibition examine the consequences of forced linguistic erasure while celebrating the enduring strength of cultural identity. In the second part of the event, you will be immersed in a Soundbath. During the Soundbath you are being "bathed" in sound waves, vibrations and frequencies that flood all around you. These sound waves are produced by various instruments including quartz crystal singing bowls, rain sticks, drums, and chimes. The universe and everything in it communicates with one another through vibrations. All objects and living things, including the cells in our body possess and oscillate with certain frequencies. The vibrations and frequencies in a Sound Bath will promote healing and overall well-being. This therapy is based on the law of resonance, whereby the sound waves produced by singing bowls and other instruments interact with the body's own vibrational frequency, leading to several positive effects on both the mind and the body. As the vibrational sounds fill the room and surround your body, your nervous system will switch into a restorative alpha and/or theta state by down-regulating the nervous system. This will help to calm the mind and relax the body, allowing you to let go of tension and enter a state of deep relaxation.
