Evers, a heroic NAACP Mississippi Field Secretary, was killed by an assassin's bullet. This prompted the NAACP Chairman Bishop Stephen Spottswood to pay tribute to this gallant warrior at the NAACP Convention in Chicago, Illinois, in July 1963.
