A self-guided walk around the grounds of the historic Glenside Hospital, the tour includes built features of the hospital and some of the specimens trees on the grounds. You will notice that a number of these features were aimed at making life more health or interesting for the patients. The hospital had extensive grounds from the beginning as it was thought that fresh air, green space and exercise were helpful for mental problems. The patients were taken for compulsary walks around the grounds, which were planted up to be engaging and imoroving, with up to 70 species of trees. Many species are still growing around the buildings today, and some of them are included in the tour. A tour of the Museum in 20 objects (approx. 45 minutes) This a self-guided indoor trail within our museum so please visit during our opening hours (twice weekly, Weds 10am-1pm, Sat 10am-4pm). We've chosen 20 objects to give you the highlights of the stories in our museum. For a quick visit, follow the points around the building to find the mental health hospital, the WWI Beaufort War Hospital, and Stoke Park, the learning difficulties hospital. For a longer more thorough look around, allow yourself to be engaged by all the fascinating items you will glimpse in the cases you pass. Breathwork, Yoga and Sound Bath | The Mount Without

Jul 2, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Bristol
Yoga
Cultural Experiences
Join me for an immersion in transformational breathwork, kundalini Global yoga and sound bath in The Mount Without where we’ll be accessing altered states of being. Breath is a powerful tool we can harness to regulate the nervous system, release stress and tension in the body, and enter a deep state of calm and presence. When we combine breath and posture it allows us to quiet our minds and open our hearts, expanding our energetic field, and accepting ourselves completely as we are. Some breaths will be energetic, some incredibly soft and gentle. Both will allow us to experience complete stillness. Working with the science of these divine ancient practices can significantly reduce anxiety, depression, and addictive behaviours, creating a profound sense of balance within the self. There is an ever-expanding body of research that supports the benefits of yoga, breathwork and meditation in improving and maintaining overall mental and physical health. One of the many beautiful aspects of working with yoga and the breath is that they gift us the ability to ‘self-regulate’: the state of presence we experience removes the need to reach outside ourselves for something to soothe us. The art of these classes is to discover that you can change how you feel. Our feelings are not in our head, but in our bodies. We have autonomy, and yoga and breath can change our physical and emotional state, our hormonal flow, and ultimately how we feel and experience ourselves. What to expect: Through a dynamic practice of breathwork , and Yoga we’ll activate the energic body, finding deep presence, expansion, and often blissful states. Release stress and tension while finding stillness, whether through energising or soft, gentle breathwork. Each session ends with a crystal bowl sound bath, leaving you in a deeper state of relaxation. No experience is necessary, and I aim to create a safe, welcoming space for all. Please note, these classes are not suitable during pregnancy. Information Source: Lucy Spragge | eventbrite

Please send us a photo of your annual pass via social media or our website to obtain the offer code. More information about the Tea in the Turret experience The turret room and balcony are part of our Grade II listed chapel, constructed in 1881. While once it played host to the hospital's medical superintendent and his family during church services, we’ve now transformed it into a lighthearted reflection of the content of our museum. Tea in the Turret is a playful showcase of the 5 elements of mental health care in a pre-medication era: a good diet, adequate exercise and plentiful sleep, alongside purposeful occupation and pleasant surroundings. An uplifting homely environment was thought to lift to the spirits in a way that could improve mental health, so the wards were often decorated in patterned wallpaper and cheerful colours. This can be seen in the artist Stanley Spencer’s painting “bed making”, inspired by his time here as a medical orderly during the institution’s time as Beaufort War Hospital. Occupation often comprised work on the hospital farm for men, and laundry or needlework for women. If you have any questions about this experience, please don’t hesitate to drop us a message via Eventbrite, social media or our website . Information Source: Glenside Hospital Museum | eventbrite

Lunchtime Lecture: For Richer, for Poorer, in Sickness and in Health: A Bristol Physician and his Patients Two Centuries Ago The Early Victorian scientist James Cowles Prichard was a psychiatric theorist of international reputation, the founder of the British science of anthropology and the first linguist to demonstrate that Celtic is a member of the Indo-European language family. He is also considered to be the greatest anti-racist scientist of the nineteenth century. But when not entertaining fellow intellectuals at the Red Lodge, Dr. Prichard was a physician to the rich and poor of Bristol. Author Margaret Crump’s illustrated talk on Dr. Prichard’s medical practice marks the publication of her biography, James Cowles Prichard of the Red Lodge: A Life of Science During the Age of Improvement, University of Nebraska Press, 2025. Theater
Hailing from Bangalore and now based in London, Jyotsna Srikanth is Europe’s foremost South Indian Carnatic violinist, renowned for her versatility, innovation, and technical mastery.   " A n extraordinary and versatile violinist " (★★★★ The Guardian )  Jyotsna Srikanth presents and explores the lush green melodic possibilities in the Carnatic genre. Carnatic is another name for South Indian Classical music; a musical form that has seen few changes for centuries and that has steadily adapted itself from the temple music form to its current comprehensive system that has spread across continents.  "Captivating audiences with the intricate aesthetics and technical nuances of the Carnatic tradition, as interpreted through her innovative approach to the Western violin." ( World Music Central )  Her music illuminates Carnatic musical tradition in kaleidoscopic colour. Approaching every musical interaction with a forward-thinking outlook and elastic expressivity, Jyotsna is just as likely to be found reveling in raga rotations or jamming in free jazz, often marrying the two.  Jyotsna Srikanth will be presenting a traditional, unspoilt and orthodox form of Carnatic music along with Abhiram Sahathevan on mridangam (two-sided drum) and Ram Sivasubramaniam on khanjira (one sided drum).   "A demonstration of Indo-jazz with a southern slant at its finest."
