Breaking the Dead Silence: Book Launch | Widcombe Social Club

Breaking the Dead Silence: Book Launch Come join us for an exciting evening celebrating the launch of a new book reflecting on the aftermath of the toppling of Bristol’s Colston statue, the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement and the subsequent heritage ‘culture wars’. The event will be held at Widcombe Social Club, where you can meet the authors, engage in a discussion about how heritage could be more inclusive in Bath and Bristol and get your copy signed. The murder of George Floyd in 2020, the renewed international take up of the cry Black Lives Matter and the subsequent toppling of a statue commemorating slave-merchant-turned-philanthropist Edward Colston in Bristol provoked urgent questions on memorialisation, white privilege, social justice and repair. Debates on how legacies of colonialism and empire in Britain should be addressed spilled out of the scholarly world into the public discourse. In the immediate wake of the statue toppling this book offers a unique, distinctive and timely contribution to those debates: a series of voices and experiences are offered as critical commentaries and accounts of recent interventions on an official heritage narrative. It sets out to break the ‘dead silence’, by bringing together diverse perspectives from academics, artists, activists, heritage professionals and tourist guides. The book offers fresh insights, referencing work attending to the impacts and legacies of colonisation primarily in Bath and Bristol, augmented with comparative contributions from Lancaster and Mexico offering significant and pertinent resonances. A range of strategies are explored towards enabling silenced voices to be heard and engage in conversations about how the past is represented, including Co-Creation, new agonistic museum practices, innovative creative and somatic approaches. The book is available to order or to download for free as a PDFfrom https://www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/doi/book/10.3828/9781802075885 Use code 27BREAKING for an extra discount when purchasing directly from the LUP website before 20th September 2024. Roseberry Road Studios hosts a retrospective by British photographer Homer Sykes. FREE ADMISSION WITH TICKET - You do not need a specific ticket for entry on a specific date, any ticket allows entry for any date(including opening night). Opening Night 17th October (6pm - 10pm) Exhibition Hours 18th October - 3rd November (Thursday - Sunday, 11am - 5pm) Homer Sykes is a professional magazine and documentary photographer. His principal commissions in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s were for the weekend colour supplements, such as The Telegraph, The Sunday Times, The Observer, You, and the Sunday Express magazines. He covered weekly news for Newsweek, Time, and the former Now! Magazine, documenting conflicts in Israel, Lebanon, and Northern Ireland, as well as weekly news in the UK. Over the last fifty years, he has captured numerous magazine portraits of both the famous and not so famous—at home, at work, and at play. Alongside his commercial magazine assignments, Sykes has always worked on personal photographic documentary projects. In the 1970s, he began what has become an ongoing career project documenting traditional British folklore customs and annual events. His first book, Once a Year, Some Traditional British Customs (Gordon Fraser), was published in 1977. In 2016, Dewi Lewis Publishing reissued this volume with over 50 'new' images from his archive. Sykes is the author and co-author-photographer of nine books about Britain, as well as Shanghai Odyssey (Dewi Lewis Publishing) and On the Road Again (Mansion Editions). The latter, an American project, began in 1969 while Sykes was in college. The photographic road trip was repeated in 1971, with the work then set aside for thirty years. In 1999 and 2001, Sykes traveled once again by Greyhound bus, crisscrossing America to document the ‘down home’ idiosyncrasies of everyday middle America. In 2002, Sykes established his self-publishing concern, Mansion Editions, which has published On the Road Again and Hunting with Hounds. More recently, Cafe Royal Books has published 30 zines of his work. As an award-winning photographer, Sykes has never been busier, managing his extensive archive of over twenty thousand content-rich images, working on personal projects, and shooting new material. His work is held by many private collectors and national collections. For ten years, he was a Visiting Lecturer at the London College of Communication (University of the Arts London), where he conducted group and one-to-one tutorials with both MA and BA students studying Photojournalism and Documentary Photography. Sykes' vintage prints are represented by the James Hyman Gallery in London and by Francoise Morin at Les Douches La Galerie in Paris. Written in the land Moving through a beautiful landscape within reach of the city of Bath, Poet and Facilitator Mark De’Lisser will guide participants on a 2 mile poetic journey exploring themes of grief, hope and brighter futures, while using the land as a catalyst for creativity. Utilising inspiring creative writing prompts and nature reconnection practices, Written in the land offers participants a chance to slow down and to delve into a deeper relationship with the land, themselves and each other. Written in the land is supported and commissioned by Jospeh Rowntree Foundation as part of the 100 days of hope project. Important information 🍁We will start our journey on Bathwick Hill at the start on the National Trust Bath skyline walk. (These three words: ///moods.drip.round) Then slowly make our way across Bathwick Fields and down into Smallcombe cemetery and through Smallcombe woods, before looping back to the start. 🍁The circular route is around 2 miles long, and including stops and breaks I envision the walkshop should take around 4hrs. 🍁We will be moving slowly and intentionally across the land and stopping often. There will be a stop for lunch so bring food, drink and snacks 🍁There are some inclines and uneven paths as well as muddy patches, so please wear appropriate footwear. 🍁I’m hoping for a sunny autumnal day, but wrap up warm and prepare for some rain. 🍁If possible please bring a small blanket or something that you are happy to sit on. 🍁Bring along a writing pad/journal and some pens/pencils. 🍁If you have any questions please do contact me on mark_delisser@hotmail.co.uk 🍁I'm looking forward to journying with you 🧡 Information Source: Mark De’Lisser | eventbrite

Henk Schut is a versatile visual artist known for his approach that spans across various disciplines. His work is deeply rooted in exploration—he probes environments, communities, and historical as well as contemporary issues to inspire his artistic projects. Schut's creative process is highly adaptive, with each project taking on a unique form that best conveys the underlying concept. Central to his approach is the relationship between space, sound, and time, exploring how auditory experiences influence the perception of a location and shape one’s understanding of their environment. In recent years, Schut's work has been exhibited at various prestigious venues, including Lentos, kunstmuseum, Linz , NEST ruimte in Den Haag, Festival van Vlaanderen MSK/GUM/S.M.A.K. in Gent, York Art Gallery in the UK, Hermitage and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Notably, his large-scale installation The Van Gogh Mile (2012-2013) was commissioned by the Van Gogh Museum and hailed as the Best Work of Art of 2012 by NRC art critic Bianca Stigter. He also curated the 2015 Van Gogh Museum exhibition When I Give, I Give Myself, where he selected 23 artists to respond to specific letters by Van Gogh, creating new works that were displayed alongside Van Gogh’s masterpieces. The team at Anemoi have been revitalising and adapting this innovative propulsion system for the demands of modern shipping for over ten years, but our journey from concept to commercial has not been without its challenges. This lecture, presented by Stephanie Ryder, delves into the varied obstacles faced in the design, development, installation, and commercialisation of Rotor Sails.
