Love Goes On - The Grief Opera Performance | Burdall's Yard
Sep 10, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Bath
This is a journey through deep loss to great love. It is harrowing but ultimately uplifting. The opera moves from a father's last conversations with his musician son through the shock of his death to the challenge of great grief and love. Combining elements of opera, musicals and concerts, and weaving classical styles and jazz, the Grief Opera takes us on a journey that will resonate with all who know great loss. Nigel Linacre wrote the lyrics after he lost his son George Linacre to suicide. Jazz band leader and pianist Vladimir Miller created the music, using George's bass rhythms as a bass, having lost a band member to suicide earlier in his life. Join us for a one night only performance of The Grief Opera, in Bath, on World Suicide Prevention Day, in collaboration with Suicide&Co, a national charity with the purpose to support those bereaved by suicide. Half of the funds from ticket costs will go to Suicide&Co, raising money to provide counselling for people bereaved by suicide. Vocals: Neil Latchman, Keri Farish, Gavin Macrae and Nigel Linacre Musicians: David Shepard, Jake Roos, Sara Stagg, Susan Norton, Vladimir Miller, A musical rendition of the six stages of grief. Raw emotions, words, and music, spilling over in ways thoughts do during grief. Incredible, unique experience. The most honourable way for a father to express his grief. Most importantly, his love to his son. Not seen anything like it before. I thought it was brave, and the lyrics and the style of the music worked so well together. So moving, so many emotions and outlets are opened.

By chance, Malak Mattar left her family home near Gaza City to fly to London on October 6 last year, one day before fighters from Hamas and other factions broke out of the Strip. At the age of 23, she had already lived through four wars. Now her painting, formerly celebrated for its vibrant colour, is filled with sombre shades of black, white and grey. ‘If it’s uncomfortable to look at,’ she has said, ‘that’s good. Don’t get comfortable. This is reality, there’s a genocide going on.’ Malak Mattar began painting when she was 13. She started selling her work online and three years later had a solo show at the Palestine Museum in Bristol. Her work has since been exhibited in almost 80 countries worldwide (including in Venice this year during the Biennale). In 2018 she won the highest scholarship in Gaza to study abroad, and four years later she graduated from Istanbul Aydın University with a BSc in political science and international relations. She came to the UK on a ‘global talent’ visa and is now half-way through a two-year master’s in fine art at Central Saint Martins in London. She is the author and illustrator of a book for children, Sitti’s Bird: A Gaza story (2022), now in its third edition.
