Artists’ Book 3D Digitisation: Challenges and Opportunities | Winchester School of Art
Mar 1, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Winchester
This event is part of the University of Southampton Winchester School of Art's Into the Fold event for 2025. Join James MacDonell from the Digital Scholarship Team at University of Southampton's Library Service on Artists’ Book 3D Digitisation. 3D scanning is a tool that has been widely used in the GLAM (Galleries, Library, Archives and Museums) sector as a way to engage audiences with material they otherwise would be unable to access or as a archival tool to create an accurate record of an object that is at risk of degradation. However, experiencing artwork in person goes beyond simply viewing the piece, and Artists’ Books are no exception to this. Indeed, in many cases they are highly interactive experiences that cannot be captured digitally. With exciting new technologies such as 3D printing and Augmented Reality it is increasingly possible to utilise digital tools to better imitate the experience of interacting with artist books as a whole while also allowing for individuals to develop a deeper understanding and connection to otherwise inaccessible objects. Join us for this 30 minute session and get the opportunity to experience some of these exciting technologies in person as we discuss the strengths, challenges and future opportunities of 3D Digitisation of Artist Books. Please ensure you have registered for free tickets to the Into the Fold 2025 event in order to gain access to this session and receive full details about the event to help plan your visit, including opening times, access and parking. Mar 1, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Winchester
This event is part of the University of Southampton Winchester School of Art's Into the Fold event for 2025. Join Joshua Raffell for a tour of his Artists’ Book exhibition on display in the Winchester School of Art Library Gallery. The collection of 20 artists’ books was created alongside an installation of the same name, at God’s House Tower, Southampton in 2024. The works explore my fraught relationship with, and personal story of, my borderline personality mother whilst reading a book called ‘Surviving A Borderline Parent’ that allowed me to find greater peace. The ideas led to the creation of 20 tiles that make one whole, that become the central ‘page’ of each book. The books are stored in a specially made carrying case made from wire and crochet. Please ensure you have registered for free tickets to the Into the Fold 2025 event in order to gain access to this session and receive full details about the event to help plan your visit, including opening times, access and parking. She's committed to creating a supportive and empowering environment on the mats. Known for her uniquely goofy energy, Cassidy brings a lighthearted attitude to training while providing solid technical instruction. She hopes to inspire others to embrace their own personal journey. Jelyn Waltz started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2017, and now, as a black belt, she’s a force to be reckoned with. Every step of her journey has been a fight—against the sport, against herself, and against anyone who ever doubted her. Earning that black belt in 2025 didn’t come easy, and she didn’t expect it to. She’s been through the fire, and it made her stronger, harder, sharper. Competing relentlessly for 8 years wasn’t about winning—it was about breaking herself down and rebuilding into something unstoppable. Now, as an instructor, she’s not here to hold anyone’s hand. She teaches kids and empowers women, but if they can’t handle the grind, they’ll get left behind. Life isn’t kind, Jiu-Jitsu sure as hell isn’t, and neither is she. If you want to survive, you either adapt or you quit. Simple as that. Crystal Smiles-Tharp is a 3rd-degree brown belt with a decade of dedication to the sport. Currently training under Joe Bauserman at Sharkpit Jiu Jitsu in Winchester, Virginia, Crystal has cultivated a deep love for the art, embracing both its technical challenges and its capacity for continuous growth.
