‘Power Across Platforms’: New media, old spaces and performance of strength | Institute for Medical Humanities • Confluence Building • Durham University

Stockton
Arts
Theater
The Moving Bodies Lab in the Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities invites you to hybrid seminar presented by Professor Claire Warden (Loughborough University) and Dr Conor Heffernan (Ulster University) who will explore the complex history of strong bodies in both online and ‘offline’ spaces. Further Details of the Talk Michel Foucault’s reading of bodies in space as the “distribution of individuals in relation to one another, of hierarchical organization, of disposition of centres and channels of power, of definition of the instruments and modes of intervention of power” is as relevant to the spaces of physical culture as the prison. In this seminar, Dr Conor Heffernan and Professor Claire Warden will be considering the complex history of strong bodies in spaces: what difference does the strong body make to the space and, conversely, how is the strong body manufactured or enabled by the space? Critically this will be focused on both online and ‘offline’ spaces. Claire will consider the growth of gym culture in the early twentieth century, paying particular attention to the way modernist artists and writers interacted with these spaces of modernity. Following this, Conor explores online spaces in health and fitness, specifically studying the short career of Aziz 'Zyzz’ Shavershian, often credited as the first mainstream, and male, fitness influencer. Studying online bodybuilding forums and social media platforms, Conor echoes Claire in using the space (virtual or otherwise) of fitness as a site for broader discussions about modernity, gender and embodied selves. About the speakers Claire Warden is Professor of Performance and Physical Culture at Loughborough University. Her work focuses on modernist art and cultures, interdisciplinary methods, and the intersection of sport and performance. She was PI for the British Academy-funded Health and Wellbeing in Professional Wrestling project (2020/1) and has written widely on such varied topics as avant-garde theatre, bodybuilding, concussion, and circuses. She is currently the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in the School of Design and Creative Arts. Conor Heffernan is Lecturer in the Sociology of Sport at Ulster University. His work focuses on the history and sociology of health and fitness spaces, specifically Western gym cultures from the nineteenth century to the present day. Conor has previously published The History of Physical Culture in Ireland (2021), The History of Physical Culture (2022) and Indian Club Swinging and the Birth of Global Fitness (2023). Conor is currently working on a book about the globalization of fitness in the nineteenth century. This seminar is brought to you by The Moving Bodies Lab of the Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities. This event is free to attend. Zoom details will be circulated closer to the event. Materialising Methods | Institute for Medical Humanities • Confluence Building • Durham University

Feb 20, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Stockton
Arts
A one-day symposium hosted by the Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities at Durham University, in collaboration with The Cultural Negotiation of Science research group (Northumbria University) and Hannah Star Rogers (Medical Museion, University of Copenhagen). What can practice-based research tell us about working with disciplinary cultures that are not our own? With a focus on how contemporary art practices engage with expert cultures in health and biomedicine, this symposium foregrounds questions of method, practice and process in relation to interdisciplinary enquiry. Critical art practices are knowledge-producing practices that shape interdisciplinary research agendas. Yet within academic institutions, arts-based research has often been reduced to an instrumental or illustrative device. With the aim of sharing new narratives about what ‘counts’ as research in an interdisciplinary environment, and moving beyond a focus on public-facing ‘outputs’, this symposium asks how artists, curators and other scholars might ‘un-black-box’ or make manifest the questions, processes, inter-relations and power dynamics that inform practice-based research at the interface of art and science. Hybrid keynote: Art, Science, and the Politics of Methods Rogers explores how the tools of Science and Technology Studies (STS) can provide critical insights into art and science projects, highlighting the practices of these knowledge-making communities as discussed in her book Art, Science, and the Politics of Knowledge (MIT Press, 2022). Rogers challenges the conventional boundaries between art and science, suggesting that these fields may be understood as knowledge communities constructing, maintaining, and manipulating their own boundaries. By demonstrating how STS methodologies are being applied by STS scholars to artistic practices and, conversely, how art can inform STS inquiry, Rogers highlights the emergence of a new subdiscipline—Art, Science, and Technology Studies (ASTS). This framework reimagines the categories of art and science and shows their changing states, with significant implications for understanding their roles in shaping social worlds. Find out more about the Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities, The Cultural Negotiation of Science Research Group, and the speakers on the dedicated webpage here. This event is free to attend. Zoom details for the hybrid keynote will be circulated closer to the date. Information Source: Institute for Medical Humanities | eventbrite

Women Writing Together IN PERSON: Pulp Poetry with Caroline Walling | ARC - Stockton Arts Centre

Literary Arts
Writing can be difficult. How do you find the time and inspiration in a busy and demanding world? What if you are new to it all? Still traumatised by classrooms of WWII poetry and iambic pentameters? OR you're experienced and just sitting around waiting for the inspired thunderbolt which just doesn't seem to come. Fear not, pulp poetry is the answer for you. From a poet who writes all the time and has yet to produce a pamphlet or collection. Join Caroline for 2 hours of writing about the mundane, uninspiring - the everyday of all our realities. There's no pressure to produce anything except a soft, generally shapeless, mass of words. Describe the teapot or a piece of fluff on the carpet. List all the items in a kitchen drawer. Unsequence your morning routine. Who knows what will happen! But we'll have a laugh along the way and feel better about our writing. This workshop is the antidote to literary pressure and unrealistic expectations - PULP POETRY. About your tutor Caroline Walling is an active member of the TWP sisterhood, often performing with them at festivals and leading workshops. She has been TWP poet-in-residence at DRAKE the Bookshop, and is taking her unique brand of welcoming poetry to libraries across Teesside at this year's Crossing the Tees book festival too! Different to every other motorsport in the world, it is not about the speed, but distance pulled. The pulling track is a minimum of 30 feet wide by 320 feet long. Tractor pulling is a competitive motor sport in which modified farm tractors, modified tractors or trucks drag a metal sled along a prescribed course. The sled contains a box filled with weight that is mechanically winched forward as the sled progresses along the course. Pulling this ever-increasing load eventually causes the vehicle to lose forward momentum and torque, although a rare few might indeed reach the end of the course, known as a “full pull.” The distance from start to finish is measured in thousandths of an inch and the tractor that pulls the sled the farthest distance is declared the winner. If more than one competitor reaches the full pull mark, a pull-off is held to determine a winner. Competition-level tractors might look like standard-issue farm equipment, but the similarities stop at the basic body and tires. Tractor pulling is a sport based on horsepower and torque, which means that the engine must be modified to generate as much power as possible. Various classes have been developed for tractors based on limitations in the rules. Modified tractor limits are based mostly on weight. Engines include drag racing automotive type, jet turbines, aircraft and industrial engines in various configurations. Trucks come in two wheel drive, four wheel drive (naturally aspirated, blown, diesel) and semis. credit National Tractor Pullers Association, Inc. www.StocktonDirtTrack.com San Joaquin County Fairgrounds, 1658 S.
