Chamber Music Society of SF plays Late Beethoven and Mozart | Piedmont Center for the Arts

Nov 14, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Magnolia
Arts
Orchestra
Program: Mozart String Quartet in D Major, K575 Beethoven String Quartet in E-flat Major, op. 12 More about the music: Ludwig van Beethoven had been completely deaf for six years when, in 1822, he penned his op.127 String Quartet, the first of his late quartets. These would be the final half dozen works he would write, dying a few short months after completing the collection. In his middle quartets, we hear Beethoven pushing the boundaries of formal and musical norms that preceded him. Now, in these late quartets we feel him break altogether free of the mold, creating works full of fantasy, otherworldly wonder and a deep introspection that to this day feel connected to a profound sense of humanity. Op. 127 takes us on a journey through grandeur, exquisite romance, flightiness and curious exploration. Like Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his K575 String Quartet close to the end of his life. This would be the first of three works dubbed the King of Prussia quartets, for King Frederick William II of Prussia, who was a generous patron of the arts and an accomplished cellist in his own right. Mozart's personal circumstances were (as often) quite dire: he was broke and searching for loans from his already overstretched circles, and both he and his wife were of ill health. Despite this, his K575 quartet hardly betrays the turmoil of the man behind the art. It is a delightful work of lightness, elegance, and lyricism. In tribute to Frederick's skillfulness as a cellist, K575 often and beautifully features the cello as a more soloistic and operatic voice than in previous quartets.
