Dr. James Glass, preservation consultant and architectural historian presents an illustrated talk tracing the development of the skyscraper in Indianapolis from the 1890s through the 1980s. Based on research and writing from his recently published series, Architecture in Indianapolis, Dr. Glass will discuss how various pioneering skyscraper designs built in Chicago and New York inspired Indianapolis architects, especially the “tripartite” formula of base, shaft, and column. The talk will explore early examples in the city, including the Majestic, Merchants Bank, and Circle Tower buildings, as well as the Modernist designs of the City-County Building, Indiana National Bank Tower, and Bank One Tower. A book signing with the author and opportunity to purchase Architecture in Indianapolis, 1900-1920, the second volume in Glass’s series, follows the presentation. Published by Indiana University Press, both books have been made possible through a grant from Indiana Landmarks, Indiana Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
