Artist Talk, Cover Stories: Singapore in Circles and Steel | INSTINC Space
May 31, 2025 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
Cover Stories: Singapore in Circles and Steel is the outcome of Kay Saputra’s residency at INSTINC’s Artist-in-Residence program, where he presents a series of screen-printed works inspired by the diverse manhole cover designs found throughout Singapore. Rooted in his ongoing semi-research during travels across Asia, Kay began with a hypothesis: that walkable cities with accessible public transportation often reflect a higher level of care in the design of public infrastructures. Among these overlooked elements are manhole covers, a ubiquitous objects encountered on any pedestrian journey. His fascination with manhole covers was first sparked by Japanese pop culture, where a niche yet enthusiastic community celebrates the artistry of such everyday infrastructure. This curiosity led him to observe and document manhole covers in various cities across Indonesia and other Asian countries. In cities like Bangkok, Seoul, and Hong Kong, he noted a distinct correlation between transit accessibility and the aesthetic attention given to public utilities. When Kay arrived in Singapore, he was presented with a notable divergence. Beyond tourist-centric areas like Gardens by the Bay, Joo Chiat Heritage Town, and Orchard Road, most manhole covers were utilitarian, bearing only agency stamps or service company logos, with minimal decorative effort. Rather than viewing this as a contradiction, the experience prompted a shift in perspective. For Kay, these plain covers began to reveal something deeper. In contrast to the ornate designs found elsewhere, Singapore’s manhole covers mirror the city’s values: speed, functionality, and efficiency. Here, beauty is not prioritized in objects that already fulfill their purpose, a reflection, perhaps, of a culture that prizes utility over embellishment. Through this body of work, Kay Saputra invites viewers to reconsider the overlooked and often invisible aspects of the built environment. His screen-prints do not merely document manhole covers, they render visible the ideological underpinnings of urban design and the cultural narratives encoded in material surfaces. / About Artist / Kay Saputra (b. 2001) is an Indonesian artist based between Jakarta and Yogyakarta. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts with a focus on Printmaking from Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta. Beyond his academic training, he deepened his practice at Krack! Printmaking Studio, a leading contemporary printmaking space in Yogyakarta, where he refined both his technical skills and artistic vision. He is also a member of Titik Kumpul Forum, a Yogyakarta-based art collective composed of 12 other artists. Kay’s recent works explore fragments of space time encountered during his transit across Asia. Through a distinct and curious lens, he explores how visual elements and design in everyday life both consciously and unconsciously reflect the cultural environments that shape them. By recontextualizing these fragments into his visual practice, he is paying homage to the inanimate, the mundane, and the overlooked, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the ordinary. / About INSTINC Space / Founded in 2004 by artist Yeo Shih Yun, INSTINC stands as a leading artist-run-institution based in Singapore. Pain is one of the commonest symptoms at the end of life and Singaporeans have consistently reported that one of their greatest fears is to experience poorly controlled pain when they are dying.
How is pain managed in Palliative Care? Do all patients need to take morphine? Do patients become addicted to morphine or require incrementally higher doses because their body “get used” to the drug, making it less effective over time?
These are common questions that patients and their families would ask their doctors. In this talk, Dr Neo will address these questions relating to both physical and non-physical pain experience by patients in the advanced stages of their diseases.

Hawkins Road: A Vietnamese Boat People Memorial Walk | Sembawang MRT Station (NS11)
May 31, 2025 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
Most of us would love a holiday in Vietnam. Indeed, “Vietnam” is a happy word in Singapore. At the mention of Vietnam, most of us would conjure a holiday (or some kind of adventure in the works). Only a few of us (especially baby boomers) would associate Vietnam with the heart-wrenching war years (Vietnam War) and the “Boat People”. (The Boat People were a result of people fleeing Saigon when the war ended.)
Today, our tour will focus on the Boat People and the place where they stayed while being held here in Singapore – Welcome to Hawkins Road! Hawkins Road does not exist anymore. The memories may not be so sweet for many to remember. But History doesn’t lie, especially when all these happened only in 1975, with a tail-back dating to 1996 (which isn’t exactly very long ago).
Your ole Uncle Chris grew up reading all about the Vietnam War and the Boat People. These are sad stories, complete with risk, danger and almost everything you can think of. Some survived. Many perished at sea. You would be lucky if you landed at the refugee camp at Hawkins Road.
The refugee camp at Hawkins Road had the honor of being the most friendly and most hospitable refugee camp. To many, it was like a holiday in Singapore – with visits to the zoo and the nearby bustling Chong Pang Village – all done by volunteers (Kudos to the volunteers!).
Years later, many former refugees have spoken and written very favorably about their experiences. Indeed, some former refugees have returned to live in Singapore permanently, complete with family! On our tour, we’ll relive the world they went through. And we’ll take a look at the campsite and the surrounding areas.
We meet, 9am at Sembawang MRT, 31
st
May 2023 (SUNDAY).
From there, we’ll take bus service 856 to where Hawkins Road used to be. This tour will end at View Road, about 11.30, maybe 12pm.

f you were a former Boat People, please join us. We would love to have you with us!
Note:
We do the worldwide practice of tipping at the end of the tour. Tipping guide as follows: $20 for a satisfactory guide, $20+ for a guide who exceeds expectations, and $30 for an outstanding guide.
We also reserve the right to accept or reject habitual late cancellations and no-shows.
