Carson Becke & Friends with Carissa Klopoushak | 10,000 Hours Piano Rehearsal Studios
Apr 27, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Ottawa
Program:
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897): Sonata for Violin and Piano No.1 in G Major, Op.78
i. Vivace ma non troppo
ii. Adagio
iii. Allegro molto moderato
Lili Boulanger (1893-1918): Two Pieces for Violin and Piano
i. Nocturne
ii. Cortège
Richard Strauss (1864-1949): Sonata for Violin and Piano in Eb, Op.18
i. Allegro, ma non troppo
ii. Improvisation: Andante cantabile
iii. Finale: Andante - Allegro
For the final concert in this mini-series, Carson will collaborate with Carissa Klopoushak, who is both a violinist with the NAC Orchestra and the artistic director of Ottawa Chamberfest. This program features two pillars of the violin and piano repertoire: Brahms’s luminous first violin sonata, and Richard Strauss’s youthful and exuberant violin sonata. As a young musician, Richard Strauss was particularly inspired by Brahms’s unique musical voice. The two men met in 1884, when Strauss was 20, and Brahms was 51. Brahms offered Strauss some compositional advice at that meeting: he advised Strauss that his music was “too full of musical irrelevances” and that he should “take a good look at Schubert’s dances… and try your luck at the invention of simple eight bar melodies”. Only a few years after that meeting, Strauss wrote the violin sonata you will hear on this program - it does include some excellent eight bar melodies, but is perhaps one of the most extravagant and extroverted violin sonatas ever written! Strauss may not have been particularly interested in the simplicity that Brahms was advising him to seek. Between these two sonatas you’ll hear two extraordinarily beautiful pieces by Lili Boulanger, one of the most talented French composers of the early twentieth century.

Ready to dive into some
big bold ideas
? Join us at
Beaver Barracks
for a presentation by Martin Tite, Architect. Central Parkway is a self-initiated urban design study project that imagines alternatives to the Queensway, which runs through, and divides, the traditional pre-war neighbourhoods of downtown Ottawa. This proposition asks what if the Queensway was developed differently, at a moment when the Province of Ontario continues to expand the Queensway. The study explores ways to transform the freeway and surrounding brownfield lands into a nationally significant space that beautifies Ottawa’s downtown core, and enables redevelopment and intensification bounded by 37 hectares (92 acres) of new green space in the centre of the city. A panel discussion will follow with Matthew Pinder, Transportation Engineer; Jennifer Barrett, Urban Planner and Catherine Craig-St-Louis, Urbaniste.
Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and take your ideas to the next level. See you there!
