Join preservation consultant and architectural historian Dr. James Glass for an illustrated talk tracing the origins and popularity of Italianate and Second Empire styles in Indianapolis’s architecture from 1850 to 1880. Based on research and writing from his recently published book, Architecture in Indianapolis, 1820-1900, Dr. Glass will highlight the city’s Italianate commercial and residential buildings, in addition to the more extravagant French Second Empire-style designs as they appear in Indianapolis’s commercial, public, and residential structures. He will also discuss the origins of each style in European architecture and American pattern books. A book signing with the author and opportunity to purchase Architecture in Indianapolis, 1820-1900, part of a two-volume series published by Indiana University Press, follows the presentation. Glass’s second volume, Architecture in Indianapolis, 1900-1920 is forthcoming in 2025. The book has been made possible through a grant from Indiana Landmarks, Indiana Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. This workshop will include a piece of make-and-take pottery, and your ticket price includes parking and museum admission as well. Bobby Silas is a creative potter reviving ancient designs for his contemporary pottery. He learned the basics of making pottery in 2004-5 when he lived in Zuni Pueblo and attended Zuni High School, but he already had some knowledge of making traditional Hopi pottery. While attending Zuni High School, he learned the basics of Zuni pottery from his teacher Gabriel Paloma. Bobby Silas credits learning to make Hopi pottery from his godfather Kevin Navasie. Since 2015, Bobby has revived the sikyatki method of firing using lignite coal, which he acquires near an antelope mesa at Hopi. His pieces are inspired by the Sikyatki polychrome and Jeddito black-on-yellow pottery. Each piece is hand-coiled, painted with native clay slips, and a bee-weed plant variant. Bobby has won multiple awards for his distinctive and creative pottery. This ticket includes museum admission and parking in the White River State Park underground parking garage. All sessions will start by 5 minutes past the posted start of the class time, this to keep from delaying our punctual attendees and causing our instructors to get behind in our busy studio schedule. Please check your GPS route day of for your best route to our GAI Studio. The MAIN Entry is a single man door BESIDE a business named Indy Fused Glass. Please follow the signage once you enter. There is a Silver Sign above this door listing some of the businesses inside the CCIC building. There is a ground level parking lot directly across from this door. GAI@CCIC is halfway between Centerpoint Brewery and Fowling Warehouse. In this workshop our instructor/s will guide you through studio basics in safety and process and then give a demonstration on the hot glass furnace-worked piece you will be making. You will then have the opportunity to gather molten glass from a 2100-degree furnace. You will get to choose your colors and sculpt molten glass into a beautiful and unique creation of your own. Your creation will have to cool down slowly overnight and will be available to pick up a couple of days later. The studio can get hot, so please dress accordingly. T-shirts and blue jeans work well, along with closed toed shoes. No synthetic clothing!! NO leggings!! If you have a personal pair of safety glasses or prescription glasses, please bring them. Otherwise, we have some to lend out in the studio. You must be 10 years of age or older to participate. The Black Snowboarder This is a story about a young black kid named Prince from big city Nashville, Tennessee. He enjoys sports such as basketball and football. His dad lands a new job, and he is forced to relocated to the snowy Dillion, Colorado. He is in for a complete culture shock and struggles to make friends at first. He must learn to adjust and adapt to his new environment where snowboarding is king. Even though snowboarding is a protometal white sport, he falls in love with it. Meet the Author Michael Fuller is new to the literary world. He is a travel nurse, set medic, musician, and snowboarder from Tennessee. Working as a set medic, he has been involved in a handful of films and tv shows such as “Someone like you” by Karen Kingsbury, “Ride” by Jake Allyn, and “ Street Outlaws” by Discovery to name a few. When he is not working he spends most of his time playing his guitar and snowboarding. His debut book, The Black Snowboarder, was published in May of 2024.
