The Urban Tree Oracle: Sycamore Time at MassArt Join Artist Jane D. Marsching for an afternoon of movement, writing, and drawing with Sycamore ink in conversation with one of our urban trees: Sycamore Sycamores and London Plane trees live throughout the Boston Fens area. They have been living on this planet for over a hundred million years and can live for 500-600 years, becoming ancient guardian trees in our ecologies. They have stood as witness on earth long before humans appeared, patiently bearing with all that happens during their lives. They are an ally to us in this time when we are called to the courageous act of witnessing: a revelatory staying with the trouble and speaking truth. We will gather with Sycamore in Evans Way Park and participate in a collective somatic exercise with the sun, time, and Sycamore. Then we will process and reflect through drawing and writing with ink made from Sycamore. By the end of the session, participants will generate their own oracle card (an image and text-based tool for intuition and divination), guided by the ecology and life of Sycamore. Boston-based artist Jane D. Marsching creates interdisciplinary, research-based, experimental projects that foster an experience of wonder and invite us to communicate with the beings we live with. Her current project, The Urban Tree Oracle, is a collective tool for climate resilience through deeping into relationship with our more-than-human kin, urban trees. She exhibits internationally and is the recipient of awards, fellowships, and residencies nationally. As a Professor at MassArt, she is Director of the Sustainability Minor and founder of the MassArt Resilient Pigment Library. DETAILS Date: Wednesday November 13, 2024 1:15-2:45pm Location: MassArt, gather in Evans Way Park MA Registration: This event is designed for up to 20 participants. Event registration required. This will include students and faculty/staff to share their unique insights and ideas revolving around this year's theme: BRIDGE. Life’s journey is marked by transitions, with the bridge serving as a powerful symbol of connection and growth. Just as a physical bridge overcomes obstacles and links distinct points, we build emotional and intellectual bridges that help us navigate challenges and adapt to change. In both music and life, the right alignment and support are crucial for harmony and purpose. The bridge invites us to reflect on our paths, connect with others, and guide us forward as we architect (as best we can) our futures. Our goal is to bring together bright minds and create a platform for people to let their thoughts inspire, their vision transform, and to provoke conversations within the Berklee community that matter. On a fated summer getaway in Cape Cod, two families on the verge of fracture contend with the secrets of the past in a powerful and moving novel by the author of April & Oliver. April, her brother-in-law Oliver, and their families reunite in Cape Cod on an exquisite stretch of beach called Dawnland. After eleven summers of building traditions―kayaking, whale watching, bonfires, and ocean swims―this year comes with new threats both on and off the coastline. Before their marriages, April and Oliver had an intense but disastrous fling that they kept hidden. Although they moved on with their lives, their more recent fiery encounter is getting harder to keep secret―especially as the week unravels, revealing fault lines not only between husbands and wives but between brothers, fathers and sons, and children growing up amid discord and lies. Ground zero for conflict is April’s volatile teenage son, Lochlann. The family structure begins to teeter. Secrets are surfacing. As everyone faces the consequences of their choices, the truth could finally forge them together or tear them apart forever. Tess Callahan is the author of April & Oliver. Her essays and stories have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Writer’s Digest, National Public Radio, AGNI, Narrative Magazine, AWP: The Writer’s Notebook, Newsday, The Common, the Best American Poetry blog, and elsewhere. Abandoned by his father after his mother drowns in a frozen Minnesota lake, fifteen-year-old Wes Ballot is stranded with coldhearted grandparents and holed up in his mother’s old bedroom, surrounded by her remnants and memories. As the wait for his father stretches unforgivably into months, a local girl, whose own mother died a brutal death, captures his heart and imagination, giving Wes fresh air to breathe in the suffocating small town. When buried truths come to light in the spring thaw, wounds are exposed and violence erupts, forcing Wes to embark on a search for his missing father, the truth about his mother, and a future he must claim for himself—a quest that begins back at that frozen lake. A powerful, page-turning coming-of-age story, Winter Loon captures the resilience of a boy determined to become a worthy man by confronting family demons, clawing his way out of the darkness, and forging a life from the shambles of a broken past.
