Please join us in person on Friday, June 20th at 7:00pm central to help celebrate Ivy Pochoda's new novel, Ecstasy. Ivy will be in conversation with Exile MVP Gus Moreno! AboutEcstasy: Lena wants her life back. Her wealthy, controlling, humorless husband has just died, and now she contends with her controlling, humorless son, Drew. Lena lands in Naxos with her best friend in tow for the unveiling of her son's, pet project--the luxurious Agape Villas. Years of marriage amongst the wealthy elite has whittled Lena's spirit into rope and sinew, smothered by tasteful cocktail dresses and unending small talk. On Naxos she yearns to rediscover her true nature, remember the exuberant dancer and party girl she once was, but Drew tightens his grip, keeping her cloistered inside the hotel, demanding that she fall in line. Lena is intrigued by a group of women living in tents on the beach in front of the Agape. She can feel their drums at night, hear their seductive leader calling her to dance. Soon she'll find that an ancient God stirs on the beach, awakening dark desires of women across the island. The only questions left will be whether Lena will join them, and what it will cost her. Ecstasy is a riveting, darkly poetic, one-sitting read about empowerment, desire, and what happens when women reject the roles set out for them. About the authors: Ivy Pochoda is the author of the critically acclaimed novels Wonder Valley, Visitation Street, These Women, and Sing Her Down which won the LA Times Book Prize. She won the 2018 Strand Critics Award for Best Novel and the Prix Page America in France, and has been a finalist for the the Edgar Award, among other awards. For many years, Ivy has led a creative writing workshop in Skid Row Los Angeles where she helped found Skid Row Zine. She is currently a professor of creative writing at the University of California Riverside-Palm Desert low-residency MFA program. She lives in Los Angeles. Gus Moreno is the author of This Thing Between Us, a Best Book of 2021 pick by NPR and the New York Public Library. He's also the co-creator of When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee, a comic book series published by Boom! Studios. He lives in the suburbs with his wife and chihuahua, but never think that he's not from Chicago. About this event: This is a free, in person event and registration is required. Neurofibromatosis and a Portrait of 1 in 3,000: Ashok Shrestha’s TransformationBy Rachel MindrupOpening ReceptionJune 20th, 6:00pm-8:00pm Free with RSVPNeurofibromatosis and a Portrait of 1 in 3,000: Ashok Shrestha’s Transformation is a powerful exhibition featuring nine works of printmaking, drawing, and painting by artist Rachel Mindrup, chronicling the medical journey and personal resilience of Ashok Shrestha, a young man from Nepal living with neurofibromatosis (NF)—a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. In 2016, Ashok began fundraising to travel to the U.S. for life-altering surgery after NF caused significant facial disfigurement. He arrived in Chicago in late 2017 to undergo a series of complex procedures led by renowned reconstructive surgeon Dr. McKay McKinnon. These surgeries included cranial reconstruction and the placement of a prosthetic eye, made possible by over $70,000 in grassroots donations organized by Mindrup and community partners. Mindrup, an associate professor at Creighton University and the Richard L. Deming, MD Endowed Chair in Medical Humanities, met Ashok while exhibiting her NF awareness portraits in Nebraska. She has painted over 110 portraits as part of her ongoing series, Many Faces of Neurofibromatosis, using art to elevate stories, raise awareness, and foster empathy. Portraits hold the power of earthly immortality. Through my work, I aim to shift focus from genetic complications to individual identity. My son's NF diagnosis inspired this series, connecting me to a global community whose stories I now have the privilege to share through portraiture. About the Artist: Rachel Mindrup is an associate professor of drawing and painting and the Richard L. Deming, MD Endowed Chair in Medical Humanities at Creighton University. She received her BFA from the University of Nebraska - Kearney and then continued with atelier studies at the Art Academy of Los Angeles. She received her MFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Her current painting practice is about the study of the figure and portraiture in art and its relation to medicine, healing and identity. Her son's diagnosis has been the motivation behind her series of portraits Many Faces of Neurofibromatosis (NF) . She is currently painting someone with NF from all 50 states to bring to Washington D.C. when advocating for federal funding for NF research. Mindrup's work has been shown nationally and internationally including the Queens Museum in Queens, NY, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney campuses, Georgia Regents University, Vanderbilt University and Washington University Medical School. Her artwork is held in many private collections including those of Primatologist Jane Goodall and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. The International Museum of Surgical Science acknowledges support from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. Information Source: International Museum of Surgical Science | eventbrite

Volleyball
Looking to play some beach volleyball, but can't gather enough people to play? Want to play a sport with fun people, but don't want to commit to playing a whole season? Looking to get active without the competitiveness that often comes with joining leagues? Enjoy playing in a co-ed environment? We've got you covered! West Town Social Club's beach volleyball tournaments are created specifically with individual players in mind--no need to pay for a whole team and beg your hesitant friends to join! All players in this tournament are registered as individuals, and will be assigned to one of four (4) teams based on self-ratings--we do our best to make sure all teams are evenly talented. Whether you are a beginner or an expert volleyballer, this event is all about allowing everyone to play in a non-competitive, fun environment. Why? Because at West Town Social Club, we're all about having a good time! This event will be co-ed, so that everyone has a chance to play. RULES/FORMAT Most standard recreational volleyball rules will apply. West Town Social Club's ruleset can be found here. Team assignments and the tournament schedule will be sent in detail via email prior to the event. The first round will be a round robin in which each team plays 3 games--one game against each other the other 3 teams in the tournament. This will be used to seed teams from 1-4 for the second round. Any tiebreakers will be determined first by head-to-head results, and then by point differential. The second round will serve as a semi-final, with the #1 seed playing #4 and #2 vs. #3 in in traditional best-of-3 format. The winners of the second round will then play a best-of-3 for the championship in the third round, with the losing teams playing a best-of-3 consolation round. The winning team will win 2 buckets of beer/seltzer at the after party! More on that below... AFTER PARTY We will have a great after party lined up after the tournament ends at Hopsmith Tavern (15 W Division St)! Specials include $25 domestic buckets, $30 seltzer buckets, and $5 Jameson shots. TEAMMATE REQUESTS/FULL TEAM SIGNUPS Anyone who registers a friend (or significant other) alongside them will get placed on a team together! Requests for additional teammates will be considered on a case-by-case basis up until one week prior to the tournament, and are not guaranteed to be honored. Please remember that this is meant to be a fun tournament where the emphasis is on being social/meeting new people rather than being competitive! Additionally, with this being a social event, full team signups are not available. While we hope to make this an absolutely fun and memorable tournament, there are a handful of important, not-so-fun things to note. Please see below: AGE REQUIREMENT: All participants must be at least 21 years old to participate. Proof of age may be requested by the organizer on the day of the event; please bring identification in case. Those who register and cannot show proof of age will be denied participation in the tournament and will NOT be refunded. ALCOHOL: The Chicago Park District strictly prohibits ANY alcohol consumption in city parks. If you are caught consuming alcohol during participation during this event, you will be asked to properly dispose of your beverage. Any further alcohol consumption witnessed during the event will result in being asked to leave and could potentially result in being banned from future West Town Social Club events. Please do not ruin the chances of us having another tournament by consuming alcohol on the beach courts; there are plenty of great establishments nearby to pregame (that being said, please don't show up heavily intoxicated--you may be asked to sit out until you sober up or to go home if there's serious concern for your well-being) and also to party afterwards. While we don't currently have a sponsor bar for this tournament, the organizer will have some solid recommendations for places to go afterwards! REFUND POLICY: No refunds will be issued except in the event of a non-weather related cancellation. WAIVER: All participants will be asked to sign a digital waiver prior to arrival, agreeing that West Town Social Club will not be held liable for any injuries and/or illness associated with participating in the beach volleyball tournament. Failure to sign this waiver will result in participation being denied with no refund being issued. WEATHER POLICY: We will do our best to play through the tournament on June 21st! In the event that inclement weather prevents play on that date, we will have a party and prize raffle at the sponsor bar. If weather prevents play on the scheduled date and courts are available, we will play the following Saturday (6/28). Any decisions regarding game play will be at the sole discretion of the organizer. Registration closes 24 hours prior to the event on 6/20, no exceptions! Reserve your spot today! Turow will be in conversation with award-winning author, Alex Kotlowitz. A book signing will follow the program. Rusty is a retired judge attempting a third act in life with a loving soon-to-be wife. But the peace that’s taken Rusty so long to find evaporates when Bea’s young adult son, Aaron, living under their supervision while on probation for drug possession, disappears. Aaron eventually turns up with a vague story about a camping trip with his troubled girlfriend, Mae. Days later, when she still hasn’t returned, suspicion falls on Aaron, and when Mae is subsequently discovered dead, Aaron is arrested and set for trial on charges of first-degree murder. Bea begs Rusty to return to court one last time, to defend her son. For Rusty, the question is not whether to defend Aaron, or whether the boy is in fact innocent—it’s whether the system to which he has devoted his life can ever provide true justice for those who are presumed guilty. “The trial that follows is a master class in legal suspense as Turow weaves together the devastation of Aaron and Bea’s families, simmering racial prejudice, and the impact of smalltown politics within a framework of deliciously tense courtroom dynamics. This is manna for legal-thriller fans. — Booklist, Starred Review “Turow keeps readers guessing...
