The Neuroscience of Music with Prof Lauren Stewart | The Wardrobe

Jun 24, 2025 (UTC+1)
Leeds
Cultural Experiences
The ability to make sense of musical sound has been observed in every culture since the beginning of recorded history. In early infancy, it allows us to respond to the sing-song interactions from a primary caregiver and to engage in musical play. In later life, it shapes our social and cultural identities and modulates our affective and emotional states. In this illuminating talk, Professor Lauren Stewart will show that the ability to perceive and make sense of musical sound is remarkably sophisticated, and can be acquired simply by being exposed to the music of one’s own culture. From those who have too little music in their lives (those with ‘congenital amusia’) to those with too much (musical earworms or even hallucinations), we will consider what we can learn from studying these phenomena scientifically. Finally, we will explore the therapeutic potential of music, with examples from stroke rehabilitation and perinatal mental health in sub-Saharan Africa. This talk will give you a unique insight into music, its place in our lives, communities and culture and why it has been referred to as ‘the most underutilised health asset on the planet’. Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat! Follow us on IG @seedtalks Lauren is Professor of Psychology at the University of Roehampton.. She has published widely on topics including learning and plasticity, congenital amusia, earworms and therapeutic aspects of music. She has been engaged in several citizen science and public engagement projects, including a Silent Disco earworm experiment at Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry, a live experiment on musical plagiarism at the Science Museum’s Dana Centre and an in depth discussion on the ‘Tingle Factor’ in music as part of Radio 3’s Wellcome Collection residency. She is currently leading a large global health initiative called CHIME Project, which explores how culturally embedded musical practices can support women’s mental health during pregnancy. Testimonials from our guests ⭐ Super Interesting talks! Fun and Informative - Ally S . ⭐ Expertly run, talks are always super informative and a lot of fun! Couldn’t recommend these enough! 5 star. - Owen S ⭐ Been to a few talks and all have been super interesting. An enjoyable evening to go to either alone or with friends. Bridge Quartet ’s debut project pays tribute to Sonny Rollins’ iconic album ‘The Bridge’, played in its entirety, alongside gems from Rollins’ following album ‘What’s New’: all recorded within a few months in early 1962 by Rollins’ same band of Hall, Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Ben Riley (drums). This project is touring Norway and the UK in 2025 (the year the saxophone colossus himself turns 95). Limited Advance Tickets available. Walk-ins welcome. Doors open at 8pm. Over 18's only. Jun 29, 2025 (UTC+1)
Leeds
Family Events
Family friendly all ages and abilities session. Please note, the stated time includes kit on/ off time. What happens at family friendly learn n' roll? It is a roller disco, but at the Ramgarhia Sports Centre! Expect old school disco vibes, with tips to improve your skating and optional games, complete with cold soft drinks. Quad and inline skaters are welcome. We have a small amount of space for accompanying non-skating partners and parents/carers. We allow parents/carers to walk with their child within the practise zone space, not around the full hall thank you. Roller skating is hard at any age! We expect all skaters to encourage each other and give less experienced skaters a bit more room. Is this a coached session? We are able to offer mini workshops in the form of a few quick tips, but our team needs to look after all the skaters in the session. This includes checking you've put wrist guards on correctly - they are tricky - to getting our newer skaters rolling. After that, we will do our best to support other skate skills requested within the session, but for more structured learning, check our sessions at The Skate Sanctuary. These are split by age and skill level so we can really tailor our coaching to your needs. There is a part of the hall set out as a 'practise zone' for building confidence, while the rest of the hall is set out as a rink. We may play games during the session. All games are optional - if you do not wish to take part, simply keep skating in the practise zone. Will skate hire be available? Yes, you will be able to hire our roller skates. Please make sure you book a separate skate hire ticket and tell us the size you need. We will have protective pads available for you to borrow on a first come first served basis. Will refreshments be available? Yes. A selection of cold drinks will be available. Please note: Due to the nature of the venue we are unable to provide hot drinks - There is no cafe onsite. You're welcome to bring your own hot drink, this must be in a cup with a lid. If you wish to bring your own snack, please eat these outside the hall. How do I find the venue? The Ramgarhia Sikh Sports Centre is near Sheepscar Interchange on Chapeltown road. Drive in through the ornate gates and up the slope to the sports hall at the back of the site. There is plenty of free parking outside the front of the sports centre. Bus stops are right outside the gate. Please wait in the hallway outside the sports hall until invited in. It is helpful if you have your ticket ready to scan. Ticket Terms and Conditions: Please check if you are able to hire skates / require your own skates as we do not provide hire skates for every class. Under 18s must be accompanied by a guardian or responsible adult We strongly recommend all skaters, particularly children and beginners wear full protection. This is available for free. All identities and genders are welcome. We welcome inline skaters. Skateboards, scooters and heelys are not allowed. You authorise The Skate Sanctuary to take photographs and video of the session to share on their website and social media. Please speak to instructors or marshalls at the session if you do not wish your image to be included. We assume you are well and there are no reasons you should not be roller skating. Published event times reflect venue availability time - you may be asked to remove your skates up to 15 minutes before the published end time in order for us to clear the venue on time. We are happy to refund/reschedule tickets if you tell us by email more than 24 hours in advance of the class. Please email skate@rollergirlgang.co.uk We are not able to accept cancellations via social media DMs. By booking you will also need to accept our cancellation, COVID and respect policies as well as our liability waiver You undertake all activity at your own risk.
