Comprised entirely of volunteer singers, this 160-voice auditioned chorus is dedicated to performingchoral-orchestral masterworks at the highest artistic level. Founded in 1963, the Nashville Symphony Chorus has contributed to the Symphony’s GRAMMY®-nominated recordings and has premiered several commissioned works, including Gabriela Lena Frank’s Conquest Requiem. There he conducts the Vanderbilt Sixteen as well as courses in conducting and music education. He also serves as Director of the Nashville Symphony Chorus, which has included chorus preparation for many of the repertoire’s most revered masterworks. He has conducted honor choirs in a dozen states and conducted residencies in the United Kingdom and China. The Tallahassee Community Chorus began in 1988 as a collaborative effort between the Florida State University School of Music and 37 community singers. The ensemble has grown to more than 200 singers and has become one of the leading non-auditioned community choruses in the country. Much of the momentum for this growth and development has been the genius of former Artistic Director, Dr. André J. Thomas, whose energy, skill and musical talents are known and respected throughout the choral world. Upon the retirement of Dr. Thomas at the end of the 2018-19 season, the Chorus welcomed its current Artistic Director, Dr. Michael Hanawalt. In keeping with its mission, the Chorus promotes choral music through excellence in performance, invites schools to attend dress rehearsals, and partners each concert with a local human services nonprofit organization. The repertoire of the Chorus focuses on the performance of large masterworks with orchestra. Recent performances include works by Mendelssohn, Handel, Thompson, Brahms, Lauridsen, Fauré, Ray, Poulenc, Honegger, Haydn, Mahler, Vaughan Williams, Thomas, Dilworth, and Beethoven. (2008), in Prague, Czech Republic, in the Prague Choral Festival (2011), in Paris and Normandy, France, in the Paris Choral Festival (2013), in Italy for the Rome Festival (2015), Ireland for the Limerick Sings! Festival (2017). In February 2019, the Chorus performed the world premiere of the André Thomas Mass: A Celebration of Love and Joy at the American Choral Directors 60th Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Michael Hanawalt is the Director of Graduate Choral Studies at Florida State University, where he conducts the Chamber Choir, teaches graduate courses in conducting and choral literature, and serves as Artistic Director for the Tallahassee Community Chorus. Previous appointments include Director of Choral Activities at Wichita State University, Chorus Director at the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, and Visiting Instructor of Music at St. Olaf College. Active as a conductor and tenor soloist, Dr. Hanawalt has conducted choirs and honor choirs in and from many American states as well as the Czech Republic, Portugal, and Puerto Rico. His choirs have appeared at conventions of the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO) and the American Choral Directors Association’s (ACDA) Southern Region. His setting of “Amazing Grace” has been performed at two national conventions of the American Choral Director’s Association, and his arrangement of “Loch Lomond” is featured on the Cantus recording, Let Your Voice Be Heard. The RSNO Chorus is one of the busiest and most respected choruses in the UK. Directed by Stephen Doughty, they perform around 15 times per Season with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. In 2018 the RSNO Chorus celebrated its 175th anniversary, making it one of the oldest symphonic choruses in the world. The RSNO Chorus has over 130 members from across Scotland, and perform regularly with leading international conductors and RSNO Music Director Thomas Søndergård. The Chorus perform a wide range of repertoire, from large scale choral works to well-known film scores. Recent repertoire highlights are Bernstein’s Mass, Brahms’ Requiem, Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, Poulenc’s Gloria and Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, and in 2018 they gave a widely acclaimed performance of Britten’s War Requiem at the BBC Proms. The RSNO Chorus has also had great success in recording with the Orchestra. Its recordings, amongst others, of Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky, conducted by Neeme Järvi, and Holst’s The Planets, conducted by David Lloyd-Jones, have both been subject to high critical acclaim. Stephen Doughty has been Chorus Director of the RSNO Chorus since the start of the 2022:23 Season. Since his arrival the Chorus has seen an influx of new members, and an abundance of varied and critically acclaimed performances, including Verdi’s Requiem, Britten’s War Requiem, Bruckner’s E Minor Mass and the Scottish premiere of Sir James MacMillan’s Christmas Oratorio. He has also directed the Chorus in new and imaginative programmes in their own right, including Rheinberger’s glorious Mass in E flat for double choir, and concerts with percussion and organ featuring Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, the European premiere of McIntyre’s Missa Brevis and Ives’ final major choral work, Psalm 90. Stephen’s previous 12-year tenure as Chorus Master of Belfast Philharmonic Choir included a number of world premieres, most significantly James Whitbourn’s The Seven Heavens and Philip Hammond’s Requiem for the Lost Souls of the Titanic, performed exactly 100 years since the liner went down, and further European premieres of both Stuart Scott’s Requiem Brevis, which saw the 100-strong choir separated into eight choirs spaced around the audience, and Christopher Marshall’s Earthsong. Stephen particularly enjoys working with amateur singers, not least leading regular singing days frequently involving up to 800 amateur singers. He was Musical Director of Edinburgh Bach Choir for 7 years and has enjoyed the directing the Garleton Singers for over 30 years, performing with them recently at the Lammermuir Festival. Stephen plays harpsichord/organ continuo and orchestral piano and has given frequent organ recitals, including several on the grand Mulholland Organ in the Ulster Hall, Belfast. He is also in demand as an arranger and orchestrator, with a large portfolio of work particularly for young voices. He has produced a plethora of arrangements of the music of pianist Christopher Norton, including two publications of piano duets and a suite for wind sextet, and has received commissions from Children’s Classic Concerts, the Ulster Orchestra and the RSNO. Commissions from the BBC have seen his work being performed on BBC Alba and at the Last Night of the Proms, and his pieces feature on several recordings, including with the RSNO Chorus. Finally, Stephen is an Examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. www.stephendoughty.co.uk John Philip Kitchen MBE is a Scottish organist, harpsichordist, conductor, early music scholar, and music educator based in Edinburgh. He gives many solo recitals both in the UK and further afield, and also plays regularly with several ensembles, covering a wide range of musical styles. In addition, he is much in demand as a continuo player, accompanist, tutor, lecturer, writer, adjudicator, reviewer and recording artist. Cold War Scotland | National Museum of Scotland

Jul 13, 2024–Jan 4, 2026 (UTC)
Edinburgh
Exhibitions
The Cold War was a 40-year nuclear stand-off between the USA and the Soviet Union after the Second World War. Scotland’s unique landscape provided a useful base for Allied military preparations and research. The impact of the war still lingers in Scottish politics, culture and memory. Scots played an active role in the global conflict as soldiers within intelligence services and as part of voluntary civil defences. The exhibition will draw on Scotland’s rich history of Cold War-era protest and activism. Cold War Scotland is an output of Materialising the Cold War, a collaborative research project between National Museums Scotland and the University of Stirling. The project explores how the Cold War heritage is represented and how museums can adapt to tell this story in future. Maps: Memories from the Second World War | National Galleries of Scotland: National

Mar 9, 2025–Oct 4, 2026 (UTC)
Edinburgh
Exhibitions
Explore the creation and use of maps during the Second World War. Discover their use through personal stories, photography, and memorabilia. Between 1939 and 1945 over 3 billion maps were produced for the Allied, Soviet and German forces. Used to navigate the jungles of south-east Asia or for devising an escape plan, the maps on display are now mementoes. Maps kept alongside medals and photographs to say ‘I was there.’ You'll find aerial photography, war diaries, and even a fashionable dress made from escape and evasion maps. The exhibition introduces us to a Prisoner of War, an RAF pilot, a Brigadier and an army chaplain through the maps they kept as a memory of their war service.

In this module you will learn not to attach yourself to a theory, to a knowledge, but learn how to become flexible in order to be powerful and solve any life problem. MODULE 2 Embrace your wish to change through Kaizen : Kaizen is an approach to creating continuous improvement based on the idea that small, ongoing positive changes can reap significant improvements compared to radical changes to achieve transformation. In this module you will learn how to master the art of creating habits. MODULE 3 Face life challenges and storm through Hanafubuki : through ‘the cherry blossom storm’ we have the magical moment when the sakuras begin to fall, creating a delicate blizzard of petals. This concept of ephemeral beauty is a metaphor for human life, rich and beautiful but also fragile and fleeting. In this module you will learn how to remain calm to make the best decisions. MODULE 4 Express your own emotions and welcome those of others through Omoiyari : Omoiyari is commonly translated to empathy, but it actually has a deeper meaning; it literally means to give your thoughts to others. In this module you will learn how to release your own emotions and develop empathy and compassion for others. PROGRAMME OF THE SECOND WEEK-END 15TH-16TH MARCH (see separate event ) MODULE 5 Repair your own soul wounds through Kintsugi : Kintsugi is the art of mending broken objects with gold, it is the art of treasuring your wounds by repairing them with the gold of pure aesthetic experience. The wounds of our lives are seen through the eyes of the soul, which receives and heals them with the gold of death,of rebirth and freedom. In this module you will learn to perform a rite of passage after which nothing will be the same as before. MODULE 6 Master the art of patience through Nintai : Nintai is the power of enduring without complaint, without looking for quick results. It means sticking to your path, trusting the process, to your beliefs. In this module you will learn to never give up, to wait for the right time for things to happen. MODULE 7 How gratitude changes you and your brain through Itadakimasu : this word means “I humbly receive” and relates to the traditional way of showing gratitude by elevating above one’s head the gift received. Through time, itadakimasu became the expression showing appreciation for the food received. In this module you will learn the benefits of gratitude on your mental health. MODULE 8 Learn to become grounded through Shinrin-Yoku : Immersion in nature has scientifically proven therapeutic effects: it can reduce stress hormone concentrations in the body, strengthen the immune system, regulate blood pressure and heart rate, and lower cholesterol. Shinrin-Yoku is an adventure of deep communion with nature. In this module you will learn how to ground yourself. MODULE 9 Develop the best version of you through Hanasaki : this is the blossom of a flower. You will use this word for blossoming the best version of yourself. No matter who you are, where you come from, what your path has been so far, in this module you will learn to aspire to a better version of yourself. PROGRAMME OF JUNE MODULE 10 Less is more: learn to declutter and simplify your life through Danshari : There’s a new movement rising around the world. Perhaps you’ve heard of it: Danshari. It means “refusal, disposal and separation” You can simply translate it as cleaning or tidying up, but this word means more than this. In this module you will learn to abandon attachment to objects and make a better use of them. MODULE 11 Connect with your soul mission through Ikigai : ikigai is that thing that gives our existence a marvellous intensity, it is what gives meaning to life or, as the French would say, its raison d’etre. There is a fire inside us: it can burn with more force, it can weaken, but then it can come back stronger than ever. Ikigai cannot be a simple mental vision, as it is wider, deeper and absolute than the thinking mind. You can only live it, and only by living it can you know it. In this module you will learn the first steps to move nearer to your soul mission. MODULE 12 Accept your own shadows, feeling a part of the universe through Yugen : Beauty is Darkness. Shadows are what allow the visible to emerge. The whole world and ourselves are a constant duality: we wake up and go to bed, the sun rises and goes down, we feel on top of the world and we feel stressed, we move in and out, we feel active and we feel lazy and so on. It’s the natural flow of the universe, nothing lasts in the same status forever. In this module you will learn to keep this duality between inner light and darkness stable and to reach the perfect moment. MODULE 13 Accept the impermanence of life through Mono No Aware : ‘this is the deep feeling or pathos of things, the powerful emotions that objects can evoke or instil in us. It is often associated with a poignant feeling of transience, a beautiful sadness in the passing of lives and objects, like the glorious colour of autumn leaves as they are about to fall. In this module you will learn how to let go of our attachments to transient things. Information Source: School of Shamanism | eventbrite
