A Forgotten Exodus – London Film Premiere | Courthouse Hotel
Dec 1, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
A Forgotten Exodus – London Film Premiere This is a unique opportunity to see A Forgotten Exodus,a two-part documentary made by the Dutch film-maker Marcel Prins. The film has been broadcast on the Dutch television channel NPO. With the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, the situation of almost a million Jews, whose communities had been settled in the region for millennia, deteriorated. Eight former refugees, born in Baghdad, Aleppo, Tripoli, Fez, Cairo, Aden and Sana’a tell how they were forced to flee as children or teenagers to Israel. They talk about how the atmosphere changed and how they were forced to travel (most illegally) by truck, boat or plane out of their countries of birth. Their stories are brought to life with animation and film clips rarely seen before. For several interviewees, the horrors of 7 October 2023 brought back memories of anti-Jewish violence and terror in Arab countries. The experiences they describe are more relevant than ever. After the screening, we will be joined for a Q&A by the film director, Marcel Prins, who will be flying in from Utrecht, Holland.

Parmigianino: The Vision of Saint Jerome | The National Gallery
Dec 5, 2024–Mar 9, 2025 (UTC)ENDED
London
Witness one of the most visionary artists of the Renaissance at work and
rediscover his masterpiece that pushed art in a new direction. This
exhibition explores the creation of Parmigianino’s 'The Madonna and
Child with Saints', also known as ‘The Vision of Saint Jerome’. It
returns to public display for the first time in 10 years following
conservation. Born in the Northern Italian city of Parma, after which he
was nicknamed, Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola (1503‒1540) was a child
prodigy. He drew constantly. At age 21 he moved to Rome, where he
impressed the Pope and was praised as a ‘Raphael reborn’. This
altarpiece was his first major work there. In 1527, the Sack of Rome
erupted around him while he finished the painting. According to legend,
looting Imperial soldiers invading his studio were so amazed by it that
they let him continue. Parmigianino made many drawings to work out his
final composition. They range from velvety chalk studies to swirling pen
and ink sketches. We reunite a variety of them with the painting for
the first time. Part of our Bicentenary celebrations, this is a rare
opportunity to encounter Parmigianino’s dynamic creative process.

Dec 5, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
Frank Bowling, now 90 years old and still painting every day in his south London studio, has been hailed as a ‘modern master’ and one of the most innovative painters of our time. This conversation between artists, art historians and Bowling’s son, will explore Frank Bowling’s 65-year career including the extraordinary colours and forms that emerge in the paintings. It will explore his techniques of pouring, throwing, dripping, spilling and spraying acrylic paint and gel on canvas and paper on the floor and walls of his studio, using materials including fluorescent, pearlescent and metallic pigments and found objects. The discussion will investigate the artist’s practice surrounded by a display of prints of Bowling’s works from across his career. Panel: Ben Bowling, Co-Director Frank Bowling studio (chair) John Bunker, Artist Indie A. Choudhury, Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art, The Courtauld Institute of Art Leslie Primo, Independent Art Historian Ana Teles, Artist and Researcher, Camberwell College of Arts #abstractart #britishartists #contemporary #rare&limited #frankbowling #painting #contemporaryabstract #colours #abstractexpressionism #lyricalabstraction #colourfield #pouredpainting #form #colour #printmaking #exceptionalart #lambethlibraries #artinpublicspaces #artinlibraries #brixtonlibrary #BHM2024 Further information: @frankbowlingstudio www.frankbowling.com Cover image: A photograph of Sir Frank Bowling in his studio, 2020 by Sacha Bowling.
