Join us across November to create your own ‘Alpona’ artwork at our centre in the Isle of Dogs. Alpona is a traditional Bengali art form, originating from the Sanskrit word Alimpana meaning 'to plaster' or 'to coat with,' and has been practiced for over a thousand years. Initially used by Hindu women in religious rituals, alpona has evolved into a secular cultural expression in modern Bangladesh. Today, you can find alpona adorning floors, roads, and entryways during various occasions like weddings, Pahela Baishakh, and International Mother Language Day. Traditionally created with rice flour paste called pithuli, the motifs include sun, lotus, betel leaf, and creepers, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. The art form is known for its intricate patterns, blending nature-inspired designs like flowers and birds with more abstract forms in modern times. The secularization of alpona started during the late 19th century, as part of the movement for independence from British rule, fostering unity among diverse communities. While originally drawn with rice paste, today, artists also use poster colors or even stickers to craft these beautiful patterns, bridging tradition and contemporary art forms. All the materials will be provided with aim of the activity is for participants to create their own interpretation of Alpona. With spooky season's long shadow ever-growing we're looking forward to welcoming Anna Bogutsyaka into the shop to talk all things horror! The curator and author of Unlikeable Female Characters will be discussing her new book Feeding The Monster. Horror has been embraced by mainstream pop culture more than ever before, with horror characters and aesthetics infecting TV, music videos and even TikTok trends. Yet even with the commercial and critical success of The Babadook, Hereditary, Get Out, The Haunting of Hill House, Yellowjackets and countless other horror films and TV series over the last few years, loving the genre still prompts the question: what’s wrong with you? In Feeding the Monster, Anna Bogutskaya dispels the notion that there is something not quite right about the people who make and consume horror once and for all by examining how horror responds to and fuels our feelings of fear, anxiety, pain, hunger and power. Anna Bogutskaya is a freelance critic, author, film programmer and creative producer. She writes for BBC Culture, Guardian, MUBI, the Face, TimeOut, amongst others, and programmes films for BFI, Edinburgh Film Festival and Fantastic Fest. She produces and hosts The Final Girls podcast, created and produced the horror anthology podcast Eerie and has produced podcasts for Paramount, Studiocanal, BFI and Vertigo Releasing, as well as contributing to many others. This event is an opportunity for art students and young people interested in art to meet with artist George Rouy and explore his debut solo exhibition at our London gallery. This discursive and interactive evening will explore the representation of the human form in painting and give insights into the artist’s working practice. Students are encouraged to submit questions to the artist in advance, and bring examples of how they have approached the representation of the human body in their own work for discussion with the artist. Schedule 6 – 6.20 pm: Arrival and welcome drinks6.20 – 6.30 pm: Introduction with the Hauser & Wirth Learning team6.30 – 7.15 pm: Exhibition walkthrough with George Rouy7.15 – 7.30 pm: Q&A sessionThis is a free event but advance booking is required. You can submit your questions when booking your ticket. This event is designed for students and young people only. Please note that student ID will be required to attend this event. About George Rouy Focused on the relationship between interior landscapes and the body in motion, British artist George Rouy’s work presents us with a new language confronting the human body with bold and subversive energy, transformation and flux. His work shifts fluidly from unified, ambient subjects—made strange and alluring through sparse yet potent symbolism—to dreamy, emotive worlds of androgynous gestural forms. Lurid bursts of pigment and abstract passages charge these figures with intensity, evoking recurring themes: the face as a mask, the individual as a mirror, and the self as a shadow. Rouy’s paintings blur the line between the internal and external, creating a singular, immersive experience of a singular figure. They exist in a constant state of flux—moving in and out of space, place and time, blending past, present and the phantom. Moreover, his work erases the distinctions between body and mind, making the familiar feel both distant and intimate. About ‘George Rouy. The Bleed, Part I’ Emerging as a leading figure of the new generation of painters, George Rouy’s debut solo exhibition at Hauser & Wirth London, ‘The Bleed, Part I’ will feature a new body of work continuing his inquiry into collective mass, multiplicities and movement, and human modes of existence. The second chapter, ‘The Bleed, Part II,’ will follow at Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles in February 2025. Rouy’s dynamic and signature use of the human figure, vexed with desire, alienation and crisis, speaks to the emotional extremities of our time, resulting in explorations of identity in a globalized, technologically driven 21st Century. The exhibition is on view through Saturday 21 December 2024. — Image: Studio view George Rouy, 2024 © George Rouy. Courtesy the artist and Hannah Barry Gallery.
