The Hexagonal Hive and a Mouse in a Maze - Cambridge Festival Launch Event | Everyman Cambridge

Mar 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cambridge
Arts
A collection of thoughts and journeys. A dialogue between different forms of knowledge. A film about dancing, working, and life itself. The Hexagonal Hive and a Mouse in a Maze explores ideas about learning in a global context. What if every thought was a movement, and every movement a thought? What is intelligence and when is it artificial? Can robots dance? Can they help our children learn how to be? How are we learning, and do we ever stop? What are the values and skills that we pass on as societies through games, crafts, stories and cinema? Connecting scenes of pedagogy, work and play in four global sites, The Hexagonal Hive and a Mouse in a Maze invites viewers to consider the mechanics of learning. We search in the cabinets of a supercomputer, in the curve of a chalked letter, in the weaving of a basket. We jump down the rabbit hole and seek counsel from researchers and public intellectuals. Curiosity and the affordances of the essay form send us grazing, observing, and thinking through film with an open heart. In The Hexagonal Hive and a Mouse in a Maze, we wonder afresh what the human spirit might yet dream up as new and improved programming for our species. Tilda Swinton's feature directorial debut. Family Matters: Holding You Up | Cambridge Artworks & Artspace

Mar 23, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cambridge
Arts
Fine Art
Explore patterns of play, fantasy, support and constraint at work in families, and often reflected in other close relationships. Four contemporary artists share artworks around these themes, offering a space of reflection and potential shift. Family relationships, our experiences of play and fantasy, and the myriad ways we have been held and not held play a major part in forming us. To varying degrees, our families or broader networks contain us. Obstacles arise to being held and remembered. The rhythms of early interactions, resonating with our own tendencies, inform how we develop further close relationships. Questions of how to change these patterns may arise, as we grow and take on responsibilities ourselves. This exhibition offers newly created artwork by four contemporary artists as objects for contemplation and discussion, to embody parts of these ideas, and hold contrasting experiences in playful or imaginative ways. In visual dialogue with one another, new connections will arise between the artworks. A selection of related material (books, poems, and drawing materials) will be on hand to encourage further exploration if you wish. The discussion will be an opportunity to pose questions and raise ideas that have come up in response to the work and themes in the exhibition Participating artists: Jonny Aldous, Noor Ali Chagani, Annabel Fraser, Clio Lloyd-Jacob Information Source: Cambridge Artspace | eventbrite
