Visual artist and creative storyteller, Joe Winstanley, who works under the name Studio Skai, shares his process and journey so far as a way of understanding why folk narrative has always been a part of his practice and interest, consciously or not.
He will then briefly share his nerdy database of Peak District folktales and how this could soon be an open-source tool for fellow artists, writers and interested folk to continue to preserve and breathe new life into the folk stories of the Peak District. Will they listen? - Yes but only if you are entertaining Will they shout out? - Probably, so encourage interaction Will they ask awkward question? - Yep, they will, so be prepared In this master class Carmel Page, renound storyteller and children's author, will guide you through how to prepare for a meet-the-author event with an audience of children. Find out what children like to hear about, how to talk to them so they will listen and how to read aloud with flare. Interacting with the audience works really well with children but it can go wrong. Find out how to make sure your questions get answered and how to cope when children ask you awkward questions. This session will also include how to cope if you feel nervous beforehand and use your adenalin rush to aid your performance.

About this course During this one day intensive course, you will gain an introduction to the process of reduction linocut. Working with a single block, areas of lino are methodically removed and hand printed to achieve a layered, multi coloured image. We will be using a direct technique which clearly defines areas and makes it easy to plan your finished print. You will come away with a small edition of multicoloured A5 prints. What will I need to bring?All materials and equipment will be provided. Please bring an idea of design you would like to print, your own photographs or sketches. Your design will need to fit into an A5 rectangle. Please wear old clothes as printing can get messy. Aprons will be provided. You may wish to bring a packed lunch as options nearby are limited. Teas and coffees are provided. About the tutorThis course is led by Sheffield based artist and printmaker Helen Darlington. A graduate of Sheffield Hallam University,Fine Art. Helen has worked for several of the areas visual art institutions including Cupola Gallery, The Art House Wakefield and Site Gallery. For the last 13 years Helen has traded as Robin’s Room. Making and selling fine linen home wares printed with her own intricate linocut designs. Helen's work can be found on Instagram at robins_room on not on the high street or at robinsroom.co.uk About Carousel Print StudioCarousel Print Studio is a not for profit charity based on the ground floor of Yorkshire Art Space, Exchange Place Studios in Sheffield. Carousel provide educational workshops in printmaking and opportunities for creatives in Sheffield, in a bright, warm, accessible and well equipped printmaking studio. Carousel studio is located on the ground floor just to the left of reception. The doors are widened for ease of access and there is an accessible toilet.
