Henk Schut is a versatile visual artist known for his approach that spans across various disciplines. His work is deeply rooted in exploration—he probes environments, communities, and historical as well as contemporary issues to inspire his artistic projects. Schut's creative process is highly adaptive, with each project taking on a unique form that best conveys the underlying concept. Central to his approach is the relationship between space, sound, and time, exploring how auditory experiences influence the perception of a location and shape one’s understanding of their environment. In recent years, Schut's work has been exhibited at various prestigious venues, including Lentos, kunstmuseum, Linz , NEST ruimte in Den Haag, Festival van Vlaanderen MSK/GUM/S.M.A.K. in Gent, York Art Gallery in the UK, Hermitage and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Notably, his large-scale installation The Van Gogh Mile (2012-2013) was commissioned by the Van Gogh Museum and hailed as the Best Work of Art of 2012 by NRC art critic Bianca Stigter. He also curated the 2015 Van Gogh Museum exhibition When I Give, I Give Myself, where he selected 23 artists to respond to specific letters by Van Gogh, creating new works that were displayed alongside Van Gogh’s masterpieces. Welcome to our Poetry & Spoken Word Open Mic gathering, where we celebrate the power of words and the beauty of human expression in a respectful, friendly and sober environment. Whoever you are, we’d love you to join us at Plant. Eat. Licious in Bath (a cosy, plant-based cafe in the city centre, who will kindly be selling refreshments) for an evening filled with creativity, emotion, and connection. Whether you’re a seasoned poet, a first-time performer, or a curious audience member, we can’t wait to meet you! This event is based on the belief that often the opposite of depression is not joy, nor happiness, but expression. To be witnessed or to witness others in this way can be profoundly healing. You may wish to read another’s poem that resonated with you at a particular time in your life. You may have written your own. You may just be curious about poetry. You may have an excerpt from an essay you’d like to share. You may just be looking to meet like-minded people. Whoever you are we hope you’ll join us! The tickets are free, but there will be the option to donate to our chosen charity on the night, and an option to give thanks to the cafe for their wonderful space. In such polarising times, we’re hoping to come together to be a bit more Human Again through the magic of poetry and spoken word. See you there! (This event has a strict no-hate policy) - Praying // Mary Oliver It doesn’t have to be the blue iris, it could be weeds in a vacant lot, or a few small stones; just pay attention, then patch a few words together and don’t try to make them elaborate, this isn’t a contest but the doorway into thanks, and a silence in which another voice may speak. - Enquiries: @jamesmitchellcreative on Instagram Information Source: James Mitchell | eventbrite

Fusion! From Alice Coltrane to Moor Mother | Magalleria

Fusion! From Alice Coltrane to Moor MotherFollowing the success of his acclaimed study of the poisoned ballad Tainted Love (‘The perfect music book’ – Chris Hawkins, BBC 6 Music), music writer, critic and academic Alex Coles returns to Magalleria at the end of this month to talk about his latest book, Fusion! From Alice Coltrane to Moor Mother. Alex traces the origins and legacy of blended musical genres through twelve dynamic collaborations, each one explored as a chapter in the book. Things kick off with Miles Davis playing with guitarist John McLaughlin on In a Silent Way and closes with synth player Danalogue joining Shabaka Hutchings and Max Hallett to form the Comet is Coming. Chapters in between look at pairings involving artists as diverse Frank Sinatra, Lou Reed, Kamasi Washington, A Tribe Called Quest and others. This enjoyable survey reveals how these musicians pursue fusion as a process, mixing not only genres but exploring fusions of generations, eras, philosophies, sensibilities, idioms, histories and even continents. Fusion! Also highlights the music of overlooked musicians – such as post-punk singer and saxophone player Lora Logic – and overlooked aspects of the oeuvres of better-known figures such as Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell, Neneh Cherry and FourTet. Fusion! has been the book of the day on Gilles Peterson’s BBC 6 Music show this month, so fusion fans won’t want to miss this. Fusion! From Alice Coltrane to Moor Mother by Alex Coles is published in paperback by Sternberg Press (£16) Entrance is free but let us know you’re coming along. PLEASE NOTE: The minimum age for individual volunteers is 14 and you'll need to be accompanied by an adult. Please contact us if you are aged 14 -17 and would like to get involved so we can tell you more. Our email address is volunteers@run4wales.org. If you are part of a local community or youth group that might be interested in volunteering, we would love to hear from you. We have previously been supported by the police youth volunteers, armed forces cadet groups and scouts as well as social running groups and many more. We also offer corporate volunteering days. If your business has corporate social responsibility goals or would like to enjoy a team building day out of the office, please get in touch. Information Source: Run 4 Wales | eventbrite
