History of Lench's Trust | Birmingham & Midland Institute

Jun 30, 2025 (UTC+1)
Birmingham
Cultural Experiences
Lench’s Trust is a remarkable and positive symbol of continuity in a city of seemingly perpetual transformation. In 1525 in Tudor Birmingham, the wealthy and childless William Lenche decided that the income from his estates should be distributed in “warke of charyte”. Since then, generations of Trustees and officials have carried out his wishes diligently, faithfully, and thoughtfully. Originally acting as an important aspect of local government through repairing roads and bridges, they gradually became more active in the provision of almshouses for those in need, and now Lench’s Trust provides a host of later living services for people living in Birmingham. Five hundred years on and having successfully adapted to changing needs, Lench’s Trust continues its valuable charitable work in Birmingham. Professor Carl Chinn and Lenchs Trust Chief Executive will take us through the remarkable history of Birmingham’s Oldest Chairty Information Source: The Birmingham & Midland Institute | eventbrite

How Speed Dating Works in Birmingham When you arrive at Treetop Mini Golf you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date. You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. Four minutes is long enough to see if you click with the person you are talking to and whether you would like to see them again and also short enough if you don't. At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day. Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink at the Amazon themed bar! After the Speed Dating has taken place, feel free to head to the golf course and play a round or two of mini golf with some of your love interests and friends made from the evening! This is a great way to mingle with fellow daters and continue your evening! Don't forget to take your dating card home with you to assist you in entering in your ticks and potential matches. Post Event No later than midday the following day our matching system will be unlocked for you to enter your ticks from the previous evening. Join us for a brilliant evening with bestselling author, Julia Armfield, discussing her latest novel Private Rites. A stunning, unsettling novel following three sisters navigating queer love and faith at the end of the world. About the Book It’s been raining for a long time now, for so long that the lands have reshaped themselves and the cities have retreated to higher storeys. Old places have been lost. Arcane rituals and religions have crept back into practice.Sisters Isla, Irene and Agnes have not spoken in some time when their estranged father dies. A famous architect revered for making the new world navigable, he had long cut himself off from public life. They find themselves uncertain of how to grieve his passing when everything around them seems to be ending anyway. As the sisters come together to clear the grand glass house that is the pinnacle of his legacy, they begin to sense that the magnetic influence of their father lives on through it. Soon it becomes clear that others have also taken an interest in both his estate and in them, and that perhaps their inheritance may not be theirs alone. About the Author Julia Armfield's work has been published in Granta, The White Review and Best British Short Stories 2019 and 2021. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year award. She was longlisted for the Deborah Rogers Award 2018, and won the White Review Short Story Prize 2018 and a Pushcart Prize in 2020. She is the author of Salt Slow , a collection of short stories, which was longlisted for the Polari Prize 2020 and the Edge Hill Prize 2020. Her debut novel, Our Wives Under The Sea , won the Polari Prize 2023 and was shortlisted for the Foyles Fiction Book of the Year Award 2022. She lives and works in London. Bunnahabhain Distillery is a historic Scotch whisky distillery on the northeast coast of Islay, founded in 1881. It's unique among Islay distilleries for producing mainly unpeated or lightly peated single malts, offering a smooth, rich character with sherry and maritime influences, rather than the typical heavy smoke of the region. The distillery is remote and scenic, with a relaxed, personal visitor experience that reflects its quiet charm. Joe Ellis is a true powerhouse in the whisky and spirits world, with over 13 years of experience that has firmly established him as a top-tier expert and an undeniable enthusiast of all things spirits.
