Get ready for an evening of fun (and interesting) conversations. Some Single Thing , specialists in social and dating events, are excited to be hosting a singles event in the city of Birmingham for single gay men in their 30's and 40's, and we’d love for you to join us. Hosted at The Rolling Mill in the upmarket Jewellery Quarter, you will get an opportunity to chat one on one with single gay men. Let's make this a little interesting... We understand speed dating can become a little repetitive, so we are here to make sure the conversation with each date is different and exciting. You and your date have to work together to keep your Jenga tower intact. Afterall, all relationships begin with a strong foundation, right? To make things a little more interesting, you will find icebreaker questions on some of the blocks to keep the conversation light hearted and all round fun. How does it work? Our fantastic team will meet you on arrival to register your attendance, then head over to the bar and grab yourself a drink before the event begins. The team will explain what is planned for the evening. Half singles will be seated, the other half will rotate between tables every 3-5 minutes. You can expect to meet up to 30 singles at our dating event. Half way through, there will be a break for you to top up your drink before we go for round two. After speed dating, you get the chance to get further acquainted and network with other single gay men. There’s no swiping, no ghosting, and definitely no catfishing – instead, just a fantastic opportunity to have an enjoyable evening with singles in their 30's and 40's. Our team will be there on the night to support you and answer any questions you may have. Get Matching & Messaging Once you have purchased your ticket, we will send you an email a little later to create a profile and share how amazing you are. This is a great way to continue conversations after the meeting with your matches and plan that next date. An Evening with Julia Armfield - Birmingham | Waterstones

Jun 4, 2025 (UTC+1)
Birmingham
Cultural Experiences
Join us for a brilliant evening with bestselling author, Julia Armfield, discussing her latest novel Private Rites. A stunning, unsettling novel following three sisters navigating queer love and faith at the end of the world. About the Book It’s been raining for a long time now, for so long that the lands have reshaped themselves and the cities have retreated to higher storeys. Old places have been lost. Arcane rituals and religions have crept back into practice.Sisters Isla, Irene and Agnes have not spoken in some time when their estranged father dies. A famous architect revered for making the new world navigable, he had long cut himself off from public life. They find themselves uncertain of how to grieve his passing when everything around them seems to be ending anyway. As the sisters come together to clear the grand glass house that is the pinnacle of his legacy, they begin to sense that the magnetic influence of their father lives on through it. Soon it becomes clear that others have also taken an interest in both his estate and in them, and that perhaps their inheritance may not be theirs alone. About the Author Julia Armfield's work has been published in Granta, The White Review and Best British Short Stories 2019 and 2021. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year award. She was longlisted for the Deborah Rogers Award 2018, and won the White Review Short Story Prize 2018 and a Pushcart Prize in 2020. She is the author of Salt Slow , a collection of short stories, which was longlisted for the Polari Prize 2020 and the Edge Hill Prize 2020. Her debut novel, Our Wives Under The Sea , won the Polari Prize 2023 and was shortlisted for the Foyles Fiction Book of the Year Award 2022. She lives and works in London. Praise for Julia Armfield “One of my favourite novels” – Jeff Vandermeer “Armfield is an enormous, gut-wrenching talent” – Daisy Johnson “Armfield's distinct voice is her own: singular, visceral and eerie” – Sinéad Gleeson Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

How Speed Dating Works in Birmingham When you arrive at Treetop Mini Golf you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day. Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink at the Amazon themed bar! Fine Art
Inspired by René Magritte’s The Flavour of Tears—a surrealist painting that challenges how we see nature—this event brings together bold new responses from ways towards something, a collective of Birmingham artists. See how cutting-edge environmental research from University of Birmingham academics collides with the Barber’s collection. And get hands-on at our drop-in collage party, exploring themes in Magritte’s work. Come for the art, stay for the conversation, and discover how surrealism, science and creativity meet in unexpected ways. Information Source: University of Birmingham Events Team | eventbrite
