Christian Le Surf: Chicago, the Moon! Launch Show | The Hope & Ruin

Arts
Christian Le Surf: Chicago, the Moon! Launch Show Christian Le Surf: Born in Angmering and based in Brighton, Christian Le Surf is a singer-songwriter and artist creating experimental pop worlds that dive into inclinations of post-rock, folk and indie pop. Taking a chameleonic approach to his work, Christian's music explores odysseys into songs surrounding themes of politics and heartbreak, or vast polyrhythmic minimalism projects, all the while maintaining a distinct nostalgia-infused sound palette that has enjoyed cult success and BBC Introducing airplay. Christian has enjoyed his growth in the Brighton live music circuit, coming off the back of projects like his 2021 debut album 'Bontempi Cher Lloyd 1999', or his two back-to-back EPs dropped in October 2023, 'The King's Meadow' and 'The Scroll', the latter of which saw a sell-out show at The Folklore Rooms complete with stage interviews and a disorienting live performance. Christian operates his live shows between a full seven-piece live band and an invigorating solo loop pedal-based arrangement that melds surreal improvisational performances with skeletons of his songs. His latest release, 'I Wish You Hell', acts as the first single from his upcoming sophomore studio album 'Chicago, the Moon!' set for release on April 22nd 2025. Matt Hennessy: Based between Brighton and Portsmouth in the UK, Matt Hennessy is a young up-and-coming artist with a unique sound to his music. Drawing from his funk, soul and jazz influences of the 20th and 21st century alike, but with the high energy and bite of modern day indie rock, Matt's music brings something different to the table for everybody to enjoy. The recent release of his debut single, Dumb Luck , was only the beginning - he certainly doesn't plan on slowing down any time soon. Telecom: With a blend of melodic vocals and instrumental harmonies that echo 60s psych pop and contemporary electronica, Telecom form a unique dynamic. Capturing their influences, they create their own original sound. Information Source: CLS Music | eventbrite

Folk
We love a great voice here at The Folklore Rooms, and these are two of the best. It’s the return of the wonderful Adam Holmes.. Adam will be playing material from his latest album, Survivor and from across his career. Adam will be supported by J P Worsfold. Adam Holmes cut his teeth in the world of folk music. Taking a space at the end of the bar in legendary folk pub Sandy Bells at eight years old to soak up the music. Age 15, The death of a close friend and a cascade into addiction. Leaving school and moving out the family home age 16 he worked construction by day and battle rapped by night. He found his way out through the focus of rapping until a singer booked didn't show, Adam stepped up and discovered his singing voice. On the very same day he was finally offered a Carpentry apprenticeship aged 19 he received a phone-call offering him a place in the semi finals of the BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2009. He hasn't looked back since. Adam Holmes lyrics resonate like ancient folk songs. His melodies familiar and uplifting. Its not unusual to feel tears during his live shows which have the feel of a boozy church service. James Bond meets Robert Burns. Classy and timeless. J P Worsfold is a writer of emotional contemplative contemporary folk songs that speak of connection, joy and belonging. With a subtle blend of rich vocal harmony, sweeping string arrangements alongside heartfelt piano and guitar. They are songs to evoke life’s deeper meaning and to inspire connection within ourselves and the natural space around us. You will find yourself captivated by spellbinding songs and performances that leave audiences feeling genuinely moved by a truly magical event. REA | Garden Shed EP Launch | St Augustine's Centre, Brighton Support from Hypnic Jerk + Josephine Illingworth 25/04 | £11 adv Doors 7.30pm Performance starts 8.00pm On the 26th of April in a stunning chapel near Preston Park, the rapidly rising folk musician, REA, will be performing her beautiful debut EP ‘ Garden Shed ’. It’s set to be a magical evening of atmospheric music in a spectacluar space with gorgeous acoustics. REA writes & record much of her music in quiet outdoor spaces, blending sounds of flowing rivers, falling rain & birdsong with her emotive storytelling. This distinctive sound has led her to be booked for The Great Espace, Homegrown Festival & a variety of exciting support sets around the south-east of England. She’s also received recognition from BBC Introducing , Amazing Radio, Platform B, Slack City, Rapture Magazine & Karma! Magazine . Additionally REA was selected for a PRS-funded artist development programme with AudioActive & is currently collaborating with the London Philharmonic Orchestra on new music. This show will celebrate her debut project, ‘ Garden Shed’ , produced by Josh Harrison ( The Cure, Royal Blood, Lovejoy ). It’s an experimental venture rooted in nature. With songs recorded in a secluded woodland in the South Downs, the 4-track EP carries a raw, earthy nostalgia, reminiscent to indie folk projects of Bon Iver, Adrianne Lenker , and Hana Stretton. Also on the line-up is the incredible Josephine Illingworth , a London-based musician and artist who paints pictures with sound. Recently, her haunting single, ‘Silent Earth’, received world-wide attention & gained over 5.5 million streams on Spotify. Fascinated by nature and religion, her songwriting is built of her own personal mythology; memories of her suburban childhood and stories from the fields and mountains she wandered to once she grew up, twisted through the vivid and sometimes surreal lens of her lyricism. It’s a sound that has cemented her as one of the most eagerly anticipated voices of today. They'll be joined by the amazing Hypnic Jerk, creators of warm & introspective material, who draw their influence from outsider artists such as Dave Bixby, Daniel Johnston & a select few Kinks (demos).
