Every living being since the dawn of time has gazed up at the same moon. A moon which inspired mythology, literature, religion, philosophy, science; a moon that directs migrations, tides, the movement of leaves, and perhaps even the blood in our veins. You will be hard pressed to find an artist untouched by the moon. These workshops are first and foremost about inspiration. Every month I bring words and materials, and we use them as prompts, as jumping off points into our own writing. Join us for the May Moon - also known as the Flower Moon, Milk Moon, Frog Moon - who will this moon be to you? Suitable for every level of writing and every genre, whether you’re a dedicated moon-worshipper or someone who enjoys the simple awe of looking up into a night sky and finding light. ** Coco Lone Nealis an apprentice associate at the Writers Workshop and studying for an MA in Nature and Travel Writing. In a previous life she was a researcher on rivers, and you cannot look to water without also turning to the moon. image is by Maria Clara Eimmart (1676-1707), pastel on blue cardboard Information Source: The Writers Workshop | eventbrite

Fine Art
Local artist Janet Freckleton takes photographs of nature in and around Chapeltown, Leeds, near to where she grew up and currently lives, to share them with family, friends and colleagues. Recently she has photographed a treescape across the road from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, and reflects on the beauty of nature right here in the heart of the city. She returns through all seasons to photograph the same spot, taking time to look again at her images to explore themes of belonging, and the beauty of nature, that we can easily overlook right on our doorstep. Janet's photography reminds us that even those who are often overlooked, are loved and seen by God. Dr Sharon Watson MBE DL, Chief Executive and Principal of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, reflects on partnerships and connections forged through the ‘Four Seasons of the Caribbean’, commissioned by Leeds International Concert Season in partnership with Riley Theatre for the Sound Out Leeds series 2023/24. In conversation, Janet and Sharon will reflect on their own interpretations of what our Art Theology Festival theme ‘Wisdom: Rooted in Place’ means to them, and how they each have explored their creativity through the phrase ‘Four Seasons’. ____________________________ Come along and join in this intimate and inspirational conversation between two women from Chapeltown as they explore their creative roots through dance, photography, and social justice. Talk: Arts Crafts to Art Deco-Women Artists & the Sheffield Silver Industry | Millennium Gallery

May 16, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Sheffield
Arts
Craft
From 1888 through to the 1930s, there were remarkable waves of developments in the applied arts – Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. These movements came after a sustained period of public investment in art and design education which saw an astonishing growth in the number of talented and well-trained artist-designers – many of whom were women. These women who contributed to the new waves of design often received little credit during their lifetimes and are not widely known today. Today, Sheffield is known as “Steel City”, but at the start of the 20th century it was also “Silver City”, home to many highly respected firms producing silverware and cutlery. In this talk, Steve will explore the key characteristics of the Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements, whilst highlighting many of the women designers linked to Sheffield. You’ll also find out more about the development of art schools and the growth in demand for art training that fuelled these movements. Please donate if you're able and help keep your museums open and available for everyone to enjoy. Suggested donation £5 – when you select your tickets, please scroll down and select ‘General Admission + Donation’. Information Source: Sheffield Museums | eventbrite

Exercise
This is your chance to create a special memory with your baby—joining a baby-wearing exercise class designed just for you! I’m travelling all the way from Saltburn-by-the-Sea to bring this class to you, and it’s not likely to happen again anytime soon. Don’t miss out! Note: Please ensure you’re at least 6 weeks postnatal after a vaginal birth or 10 weeks after a C-section, with your health professional's approval to exercise. What to Expect This 40-minute class is set to upbeat, feel-good music and is all about lifting your mood. Expect the instructor (that is me) to bring the energy and fun as you laugh, smile and feel great being in a room full of mums who understand what you’re going through. We’ll start with a warm-up to ease into things, followed by a track focusing on connecting with your pelvic floor and lower abdominal muscles. From there, we’ll move into the main part of the class—designed to get you moving at a pace that feels right for you. You’ll be encouraged to listen to your body and join in as much or as little as you feel comfortable. I’ll provide different levels of movement throughout the workout, so whether you’re running on minimal sleep and want to keep things gentle, or you’re ready for a more advanced workout, this class will meet you where you’re at. And, of course, breaks are welcome anytime! What You’ll Need Please ensure your baby carrier is secure. You’re welcome to drop me a message about your specific carrier before the class if you’re unsure—it’s important that both you and your baby are comfortable.Wear comfortable clothes that you can move easily in and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. If you’d like, you can also bring small hand weights (0.5kg or 1kg), but this is entirely optional. After Class Stick around for a cuppa, chat with other mums, and pick my brain! As a former midwife with 12 years of experience helping mums recover their pelvic floor, heal their stomach muscles, and exercise safely after birth, I’m here to answer your questions. Whether it’s about your pelvic floor, Diastasis Recti (separation of stomach muscles), pelvic girdle pain, back pain, or postnatal exercise, this is a great opportunity to get the advice you need. Who Are These Classes For? This class is perfect for mums who are: At least 6 weeks post-vaginal birth or 10 weeks post-C-section (with your healthcare professional’s approval to exercise).Caring for babies up to around 18 months—or even older! As long as you’re comfortable wearing your child in a carrier, you’re welcome to join. (One mum, pictured below, even brought her nearly 3-year-old!)This Is for You if You Want To... Jump on a trampoline with your kids without worrying about leaks.Carry your baby as long as they need without back pain.Build a strong body and core to support your motherhood adventures.Enjoy some “me time” without having to leave your baby.Move your body in a convenient, unique, and fun way.Feel amazing in your postnatal body.Understand your body better so you feel confident returning to exercise.Heal and prevent Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation during pregnancy).Connect with uplifting, like-minded mums who just get it.Why Join? This class is led by me, an ex-midwife with over 12 years of experience helping mums recover after birth. I’ve supported countless women in rebuilding their pelvic floor, healing abdominal separation, and safely returning to exercise. You’ll not only get a fantastic workout but also expert guidance tailored to the unique needs of your postnatal body. In this session, I’ll touch on all of the topics above and provide time afterward for you to ask me any questions. However, fully recovering your body after birth takes more than a single class. For a step-by-step approach to rebuilding strength and confidence, you might consider joining The Postnatal Recovery Membership: https://www.karenpostrehab.co.uk/full-online-membership. This is also a one-off Baby-Wearing Exercise Class—and it’s FREE! Don’t miss this chance to try something fun, unique, and designed just for you and your baby. Book your spot now! Who Is the Instructor? That would be me... Karen Ellis, Postnatal Recovery Expert! I’m Karen, a midwife-turned-postnatal recovery specialist, and I’m exactly where I’m meant to be—helping new mums build a post-baby body they feel strong and confident in. I’m here to help you stay dry in your knickers and build a core of steel so you can be the active mum you’ve always wanted to be. I don’t believe in quick fixes when it comes to postnatal fitness. Your body is precious and deserves to be nurtured back to fitness in its own time. For some, that might take 21 days; for others, 21 months—and that’s perfectly okay. There’s no rush. When done right, your recovery will serve you for the rest of your life. I’m a mum to a 10-year-old and an 18-year-old, living in beautiful Brotton, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, on the North East Coast. This is where I became a midwife. After several years of feeling disheartened by a system that didn’t allow me to give women the care they truly deserved, I trained in postnatal and antenatal fitness and baby-wearing. Now, I’m able to support new mums in my own way. This isn’t just a typical exercise class—it’s designed specifically for mums like you. Every move in this class is tailored to the unique needs of the postnatal body, taking special care of your pelvic floor, abdominal muscles, and overall recovery. Whether you’re rebuilding strength, addressing Diastasis Recti, or just looking for a fun way to bond with your baby, this class has been created with you in mind. What Are You Waiting For? Don’t wait—secure your spot today for this one-of-a-kind Baby-Wearing Exercise Class! It’s FREE, fun, and designed to leave you feeling empowered, uplifted, and strong. Can’t make it to the live session? No problem! You can still join in by signing up to receive a playback of a recorded online class, delivered straight to your inbox. Join with others to look at the ideas that emerge when we look at art together. This will be an informal and in-depth discussion, drawing on the Graves Gallery permanent collection as inspiration. Each month facilitator Rosie Carnall will pick a new question, topic, thought or idea and choose pieces of artwork around the gallery for you to explore, question and philosophise. Rosie uses the Philosophy for Communities (P4C) method, a structured but flexible process for a group to find and discuss a big question. P4C gets you thinking creatively, critically, collaboratively and with care; thinking and talking together to delve into ideas more deeply. Rosie has years of experience in using this method and loves getting people to think, talk, and listen together. All welcome, no experience required.
