Seb's La La Land: Love & Loss | James Tatoulis Auditorium
Apr 28, 2025 (UTC+10)ENDED
Vic
The phrase La La Land has long been associated with the glamour and allure of Hollywood - a place built on dreams, stardom and the endless possibilities of invention and reinvention. First coined as a playful name for Los Angeles (LA), a city synonymous with with the entertainment industry, where countless dreamers, actors, musicians and writers flocked, hoping to build themselves a better life, by creating a different one. But what does it really mean to be in a La La Land . At its core - it represents an escape, a place where the harshness of reality and suffering can melt away, and allow for viewers and listeners to enter into differing worlds, where fantasy, beauty and possibility reign supreme. It is a term that is often describes the heady, dreamline state of students in a classroo, but really, of those who just enjoy being disconnected for a brief moment. Whilst this project begun because I simply love the movie La La Land, it really became an artistic expression of art and music where I could go to express emotions, love, passion and dreams. Music has always been a fantastic lens to explore the gratuity of life, and that is why I have decided to explore thematically through music in my first ever concert. I think the beauty of music comes in that for just a singular moment, all that matters is the singular burst of sound, and that for one moment, it exists, and the next, it does not. The sound of music can be as brief as a second, but how it can make you feel, can last a lifetime. Honestly - I think I just wanted to do something a little bit different this year, and everything ended up lining up the way it did. I don't really consider myself a very good musician either, but I do certainly enjoy it, and hopefully you enjoy what I have come up with also. At its core, music is about passion, and about how to express those feelings that cannot be written. But further, the word passion comes from the latin, patior, which means to suffer. And I think those were the themes I wanted to explore in this concert, and the most human of all emotions, that of Love and Loss. They are the most expressed emotions of all art, and really represent the expression of human suffering, which I think so beautifully encapsulates what it means to love and loss. Life can be difficult, but life is easiest when it is shared. That is why I decided to invite you all to my very own La La Land, where I aim to take you on a musical journey, far away, into this world. I have selected a variety of songs that I will perform that I think really beautifully personify this, and I hope you can come and listen and experience it the same way I have. I will be performing potentially the most difficult piano piece I have ever attempted: Ludwig Van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 13 Pathetique : 1. Grave - Allegro di molto e con brio. That is a piece that really encapsulates all of the range of human emotions. I doubt many of you have ever heard it, but it would be my pleasure to introduce it to you. The rest I hope - may not be so intense but instead I hope the night promises to be an enjoyable night of singing, and for friends and family to have a laugh. Part of me really can't believe I've decided to do this. But maybe that's why it's a good thing to do - sometimes we should take outrageous risks that we don't really think we can do. I have never really even taken myself too seriously, and I don't think you should take me too seriously either. Tickets are $25, and I will be donating a portion of any profits generated to charity. It is my pleasure to invite you into my La La Land. Seb

Antilton | TW Explosives Factory
Apr 2, 2025 (UTC+10)ENDED
Vic
“Nobody will come watch this, and that’s if you could even legally do it. It’s simply got no legs” “It has SIX legs!!!” A struggling artist has the strange idea to take Lin-Manuel Miranda’s global smash hit musical Hamilton, and recreate it almost word for word, except for one key difference: now it’s about ants instead of people. Worse yet- they want to perform it in their own backyard, and have roped their roommates into the production! The living room becomes a rehearsal space, old friends and complete strangers are brought onboard, and everyone knows it’s a circus, except for the writer, the director and the star (all the same person). Friendships will be pushed to the limit, insults will be hurled, someone will even book a gig in a Stan Original, but worst of all is this: theatre kids will try to rap. Among the cast of this possibly illegal rip-off are the Skeptic, best friend and biggest critic, the Enabler, who literally can’t say no, the Talent, someone with an actual career at stake, and Nervous Noel, who is exactly as his name suggests. The first full length play written and directed by Oscar O’Brien, Antilton was born from the feeling of hopelessness and shame that comes from being an independent artist with no prospects on the horizon, and the lengths we can go to just for validation as a creator. This slightly absurd, very meta oddball comedy play also explores the lengths mates will go to- even when their mate might be absolutely cooked.

Making her triumphant return to the Retreat stage, Amelia Adler will make you cry, then party, and leave you coming back for more! Inspired by Mitski and Sharon von Etten, Amelia and her rag-tag glamour band will shake the room with their eclectic blend of emotion-driven soft-loud indie-rock, delivering raw, confessional anthems about love, loss and navigating the chaos of today's world.
But what if the real headliner was the bands we met along the way? Then get ready to immerse yourself in the lore of Melbourne's favourite prog-rock adventuring party Black Dime Cabaret, and the dreamy jazz-folk stylings of local love LINA. That's right folks, variety is in and this lineup truly has something for everyone!
All funds raised will be donated to charities AusPATH and Point of Pride (US) in support of our trans community here and abroad.

INTRUSIVE thoughts - MICF 2025 | Limerick Arms Hotel

Journey deep into the absurd subconscious mind of comedian, clinical psychologist, ex-neighbours star & new Dad, Sweeney Young. Learn principles of how the human mind operates, and hacks to help handle it, all hilariously illustrated with startlingly honest stories from Sweeney's own adventurous life. He's been rich, he's been poor, he's been famous, and then still been famous whilst working at Grill'd. He's overcome a disastrous initial relationship with his own unconscious mind, which he is now friends with. Laugh & ponder (not too deeply, its your night off after all), as we trek together towards greater self-acceptance, and learning a trick or two that might get you out of a mental jam. When not writing in the third person, Sweeney devotes his life to understanding the human condition, helping folks heal, and finding the laughter in this wild world. Why do we suffer? Why is life so friggen hard?? Why not life be easy please??!? This hilarious show is about how the life inside one's own mind can be hard, and how to make it easier, and how to laugh at it. Trust him, he knows things. When he was fired from Neighbours, he told them 'this show won't last without me!' and look what happened! Cancelled! The whole show! Just fifteen years later!! Sweeney has performed comedy to sold out crowds in shows at the world famous Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles and Gotham Comedy Club in New York City, and performed in countless bars and venues around Melbourne, he recently opened for Dave O'Neil. He played Riley Parker on Neighbours for 171 episodes and his parents watched every one. He works as a Clinical Psychologist with an interest in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Three shows only, book early, this will sell out. Attending this show does not form a therapeutic relationship with Sweeney, and does not replace personal psychological or medical advice.
