Ed in Black: Edo Paintings Seen from a Black Perspective | Itabashi Art Museum
Mar 8–Apr 13, 2025 (UTC+9)ENDED
Tokyo
"Black" is a unique color that is not stained by anything. It has been an indispensable element in Japanese painting since ancient times. In the Edo period, when many people began to enjoy painting, pictorial expression spread and black was used in a variety of ways. This exhibition focuses on black and introduces the expression of black in Edo paintings, as well as the culture and values of the time.
Many people may think of night when they hear the word black. Among works depicting night, such as moonlit scenes and people's daily lives, we will focus on depictions of shadows and darkness and explore how black was used. We will also consider what works with black backgrounds and ukiyo-e prints that were popular with hobbyists known as "sumisaishiki" and "benigirai" with black as the base color symbolize.
In the corner where you can view the works in the dark with a faint light, please enjoy the beauty of the soft glow of the gold folding screens, which you cannot experience in an ordinary art museum.
What did people in the Edo period find and feel about "black"? We will explore the color black in Edo painting from a variety of themes and explore its appeal.

Film director Andrzej Wajda | National Film Archive of Japan
Dec 10, 2024–Mar 23, 2025 (UTC+9)ENDED
Tokyo
As a young leading director of the "Polish School," Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016) blew a breath of fresh air into the world of film with "Kanal" (1957) and "Ashes and Diamonds" (1958), and later produced "Man of Marble" (1977) and "Man of Steel" (1981) in opposition to the socialist regime of the time. He also became an eloquent narrator of Poland's harsh history and built a magnificent world of stories by frequently adapting masterpieces of Polish literature.
This exhibition was compiled by Polish experts from a valuable collection of materials, mainly from the collection of the Japanese Museum of Art and Technology Manggha, which were born from Wajda's more than 60-year career of work. This is the first overseas tour of a project that was held at the National Museum in Krakow in 2019. This Tokyo exhibition will introduce Wajda as an artist and the world of his work, with an original chapter showing the deep ties he built with Japan.
