Lunchtime Talk by Kirk Nickel featuring the work of Salvador Dalí | Haggerty Museum of Art

Milwaukee
Arts
Fine Art
YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED! Presented by Kirk Nickel, PhD, Marc and Lillian Rojtman Curator of European Art Please join us for this engaging 20-minute Lunchtime Talk featuring the work of Salvador Dalí. Dalí is known for painting logic-defying imagery with meticulous skill, such as his famous melting pocket watches, but Dali’s Surrealism took many forms during his long career. This month’s Art Talk will focus on his Madonna of Port Lligat, painted in 1949 and currently on view in the Haggerty’s anniversary exhibition, The Big 4-0 Vol. 2: New Views of the Collection. Rendered with Dali’s characteristically immaculate brushwork, this stunning portrayal of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child brings Italian Renaissance art into dialogue with the Atomic Age. After the discussion, you can stay to continue the conversation or explore the Haggerty's current exhibitions. In partnership with Marquette University’s GROW program. Comedy
Our immensely popular Dinner Detective shows are set in the present day. Unlike other murder mystery dinner shows, here you will find no cheesy costumes, no recited campy dialogue and no hokey song and dance. Our performers are dressed just like everyone else, leaving all of the guests to suspect who is a part of the show and who is not. In many instances, guests are seated with the performers and don't even realize it until they die...the performers, that is! Our Detectives proceed to interrogate everyone and find clues as the mystery unfolds. At the end of the night, prizes are awarded to the Top Sleuth who solves the crime. The Dinner Detective performs at The Hyatt Regency Milwaukee, a full-service hotel in beautiful downtown Milwaukee, WI. We offer an amazing murder mystery show paired with a fantastic four-course plated dinner. You will receive tray-passed appetizers, salad, and dessert along with a choice of Seared Chicken Breast OR Vegetarian Pasta Primavera. Coffee and tea are included upon request, and there is a cash-only cash bar available as well. Please note, prop guns, loud simulated gunshots, and short lighting blackouts are used as part of the performance. Our show does not have a theme or time period, and our performers are not in costume. You can choose whether or not to participate in the show! Our guests are encouraged but not required to perform or participate. However, since our actors are hidden in the audience, other audience members may interact with and interrogate you on their own. The show takes place all around you! Our actors are seated all around the room, possibly at your table. We also ensure each table gets to see every clue and witness every important scene, so all guests have an equal chance to solve the mystery! The Dinner Detective is a show geared toward adults. We have a strict age limit of 15 years old, due to mild adult content, loud noises, and swearing. Business casual or dressy casual wear is required for our events, unless otherwise specified in the event description! Carole Hopson is a Boeing 737 captain for United Airlines, based in Newark, New Jersey. After a twenty-year career as a journalist and executive for iconic brands like the National Football League, Foot Locker, and L’Oréal, Carole followed her dream to become a pilot. A century after Bessie Coleman soared over seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Black women in the U.S. account for less than one percent of all professional pilots. Inspired by Bessie’s spellbinding accomplishments, Carole founded the Jet Black Foundation , a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to sending one hundred Black women to flight school by the year 2035. In her book A PAIR OF WINGS, airline captain Carole Hopson has crafted a riveting, adventure-filled debut novel based on the remarkable true story of pioneer aviatrix Bessie Coleman, a Black woman who received her pilot’s license almost two years before Amelia Earhart, and found freedom in the air. Hopson was so inspired by Bessie’s story, she became a pilot herself at the age of 54. Bessie Coleman, the daughter of a woman born into slavery, Bessie answers the call of the Great Migration and moves to Chicago, where she wins the backing of two wealthy, powerful Black men—Robert Abbott, creator and publisher of the Chicago Defender , and Jesse Binga, the founder of Chicago’s first Black bank. Abbott becomes her mentor, while Binga becomes her lover. Her true first love, though, remains flying.... For e ach T icket purchased you will receive the book A PAIR OF WINGS ! Additional Praise for Carole Hopson’s A PAIR OF WINGS “Bessie Coleman was a pioneering aviatrix who, in the early part of the twentieth century, was forced to travel to France to learn to fly, as no one in the U.S. would give a Black woman lessons. Her thrilling true story makes for an exciting, inspiring work of fiction in Hopson’s hands. This may be the author’s first novel, but as a professional pilot herself, she takes the tale and soars with it.” —Leigh Haber, founding books director of Oprah Daily and former head of Oprah’s Book Club Y ou will not want to miss this dynamic speaker!
