Dance Date | The Dance Complex
Feb 14, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Cambridge
About Dance Date with Decent Dance: DANCE DATE is a dance-for-all workshop that invites paired participants ages 8+ to explore communication, trust, and creativity with a loved one through contemporary dance and creative movement. Class requires no prior experience with dance: theater-based eye contact/focus exercises, ”trust fall” exercises, and elements of dance theory are employed to build trust and connection, while inevitably fostering a few giggles. Come with your child, your grandma, your best friend, or your partner and enjoy a Valentines Day date that celebrates love and connection in all its forms. Dance Date is part of the Friday Night Lights series. Following the workshop portion of the event, we'll have a dance party and refreshments will be available. About Decent Dance: Tony Guglietti received his BFA from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Upon graduation, he became a founding member of Sean Curran Company and toured across the globe. Kristin Wagner hasn’t done any of that, but she manages to work through her inferiority complex in rehearsal just fine. Together as Decent Dance, the pair creates accessible contemporary performance works that dabble in comedy, dramedy, and all things silly, sweet and true. The duet’s collaborative creative process relies on a foundation of sharing space and weight, balancing impulse and input, the occasional lovers’ quarrel, and Cheez-Its®. Tony and Kristin take great joy in teaching composition and expression through a contemporary dance lens to students of all ages, and have taught at the Dance Theatre of Greenville (SC), Free Form Dance Academy (MA), New England Conservatory (MA) and The Dance Complex (MA). Decent Dance has presented work in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, and South Carolina at The Dance Complex, the Boston Center for the Arts, AS220, the Maine International Dance Festival, and the Equinox Dance Festival, among others. Their favorite performance to date was their wedding in September 2022 at the cutest little flower farm you ever did see in Barre, MA. In late 2023, Decent Dance welcomed Nico Guglietti to the company after a lengthy audition process. He made his stage debut in June 2024, at six months old. Documentary Featuring Osimi’s Life & Roundtable on Osimi | King's College, Cambridge
Feb 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cambridge
Documentary Featuring Osimi’s Life & Roundtable on Osimi Come join us for an exciting event at King's College, Cambridge! We will be showcasing a fascinating documentary on Osimi's extraordinary life, followed by an engaging roundtable discussion. Get ready to dive deep into Osimi's world and gain unique insights from our panel of experts. Don't miss this opportunity to learn, discuss, and connect with like-minded individuals. See you there! Muhammad Osimi, the product and also the representative of the Central Asia civilizations, worked all his life to promote intercultural dialogue and integration. As geopolitical rivalries become tense with conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, there is a need to start a discussion on how to turn Afghanistan, Central Asia and South the Caucasus into a broad-based platform of cooperation and coordination rather than confrontation and rivalry. This is also in line with the Mosaic Foundation’s core mission. Short biography of Muhammad Osimi: Muhammad Osimi, the former President of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan, had held other important official positions in Dushanbe and Moscow during the Soviet period. Essentially a student of Physics, he was a man of diverse interests and capabilities. During World War II he fought alongside the Soviet troops on various fronts. In public life, he was an ideologue who contributed richly to the transformation of Tajik society from mediaeval to modern culture. As an icon of modernity and progressive ideology, his thoughts and actions impressed the vast majority of his compatriots and others in Central Asia beyond the borders of his country. As a scholar of deep insight into the culture and history of Central Asian people, UNESCO assigned him the task of heading the Committee looking after the project of writing a six-volume History of Central Asian Civilization. This is the most valued and authentic document ever written in Central Asia. The gist of this seminal work sees Afghanistan, Central Asia and the Caucasus as the region connecting world civilizations. Related to this, Osimi was deeply interested in the role of Tajikistan as one of the enlightened republics of the former Soviet Union. He was almost like a link between Tajikistan and the rest of Central Asia and thus emphasized the great quality of humanism from his inner self. Yet another area in which Osimi invested effort was creating an atmosphere of cordiality between the peoples of two ethnicities namely Tajiks and the Uzbeks. We know owing to intransigent delimitation by a Lenin-led Committee in 1924 onwards, the two prominent Tajik cities of Samarkand and Bukhara went to Uzbekistan even though the number of Tajik-speaking people in both the fabulous cities outnumbered those speaking Uzbek. The Tajik natives of Uzbekistan had retained their age-old cultural and linguistic traditions and never wanted to lose them. This intransigent delimitation created bad blood between the two peoples of Central Asia. Osimi visualized the potential damage which the acrimonious bilateral phenomenon could lead to. He was the foremost among the leading personalities of the region who initiated bridging the gulf between the two. His sustained efforts yielded positive results. To a good degree, he succeeded in persuading both sides to change acrimony into cordiality and work out a reasonable solution to the issue. In negotiating peace between the two leaderships, Osimi emphasized that an amicable solution would immensely contribute to the welfare and progress of both republics in times to come. He firmly believed that the future of the entire region could benefit from recognizing that diversity, multiculturalism and openness were what the times demanded. To garner the support of neighbouring countries, Osimi undertook travels to Iran, Pakistan and India. For a while, he stayed in Kabul and engaged leading personalities in discussion of his mission of peace. He had developed very cordial relations with great Indian leaders, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. He had a vast circle of friends in India where he was often invited to participate in high academic seminars and conferences. Synopsis of the documentary, OSIMI: The documentary film “OSIMI” chronicles the life of a man called the “Nelson Mandela” of Central Asia. With our world in turmoil through cultural and philosophical differences, the story of one man -- from an obscure country which one could locate on a map with some difficulty -- changed the paradigm of creating peace. The documentary was filmed in Tajikistan, India, France, Spain, Russia and the United States. Oscar award holder Ali McGraw says “Through Muhammad Osimi, we witness the power of art, education and science to help heal his country during a bloody civil war. The concepts that he lived for, fought for, and ultimately for which he died, can serve us all.” A short biography of the Producer/Director, Chris Schueler: Chris Schueler has created over 100 documentary programs in the past 25 years generating multiple Emmy® Awards and has been broadcast throughout the USA and around the world. Focusing on educational and social issues, Mr. Schueler’s documentaries have raised public awareness and impacted public policy nationally and internationally through partnerships with the United Nations, PBS, the CBS Network Foundation and governments worldwide. His programs have ranged from global warming solutions to opium addiction and include social topics affecting communities everywhere. Schueler also trains journalists in creating social issues–related documentaries and outreach campaigns in Asia, the Middle East, and Central America and throughout the US. He is a 1978 graduate of the University of the Pacific and holds a Masters Degree in Playwriting and Directing from the University of New Mexico.

The Feeling Sonnets: Language Play, Translingualism, Situatedness | CGIS South Building, S354
Feb 27, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Cambridge
What history does an immigrant have? How do immigrant images of “their own” history shift with relocation into another culture with its own historical narratives and concerns? How do such images change as their frames keep shifting? How can this mutability and uncertainty be expressed in the immigrant’s new language, which is not the language of the immigrant’s history, but rather carries the concepts and relations that express its own history? How can translation—domesticating translation, the kind that rewrites the source text to answer the demands of the target culture—be avoided? How does the immigrant learn to speak double? The poet and translator Eugene Ostashevsky will offer a personal take on these questions by reading and discussing poems on the siege of Leningrad in his latest collection, The Feeling Sonnets. Emphasizing the materiality of English in order to make it strange, the poems also incorporate snippets of other languages, including German. Lyn Hejinian called The Feeling Sonnets “an extraordinary and beautiful book,” while Jacqueline Saphra, writing in The Poetry Review (UK), described it as an “immense and multilingual opus of philosophy, language, pun and the absurd.” Ostashevsky will also discuss how the meaning of his poems has been shifted by the wars that took place after their composition.
