Reaching Out: Gesture, Texture & Text Symposium | Heong Gallery, Downing College, Cambridge
Feb 11, 2025 (UTC+0)
Cambridge
This symposium builds upon the success of the three-day investigation into ‘gesture’ held in Oxford in January 2024. Arising from this investigation was the notion that gestures can be bound within space and time; that they can enact – even preserve – meaning across the structures of images, texts, and performances. Continuing the investigative nature of the overarching ‘gesture’ project, this symposium aims to look more closely at the interrelations between the idea of the gestural and the textural, with a particular focus on the written word. The event will be accompanied by a small exhibition of work by the artist Lara Smithson, and will be followed by a drinks reception. We are delighted to welcome the following speakers: Professor Sos Eltis (University of Oxford) Dr Natalie Ferris (University of Bristol) Dr Francesco Giusti (Institute for Cultural Inquiry, Berlin) Dr Ewan Jones (University of Cambridge) Lily Stone (University of Cambridge)

Forgotten In The Land Of Egypt | Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge
Feb 24, 2025 (UTC+0)
Cambridge
From the Peter Shaffer Playwright in Residence, The Mango Ensemble presents: Forgotten in the Land of Egypt Written by Tom Murray | Directed by Katie Thompson Developed in association with The Sir Peter Shaffer Charitable Foundation.
In 1631, The Fens, the flat area of land stretching from Cambridge to Norwich, were drained.
In 2050, The Fens return to the sea. Two children play in the waterscape. They tell tales of a mythic Waterman, who scours the water for sunken parts. But, in the bitter struggle for survival, soon play adopts a more sinister note. Meanwhile in Ely, 2023, a priest gets a visit from a woman haunted by prophetic dreams.
It's a play about grief, faith, and the climate crisis; the crashing confluence of past and present; the refusal to heed the warnings we’re given. It’s a play about loneliness and the longing for human connection.

The Feeling Sonnets: Language Play, Translingualism, Situatedness | CGIS South Building, S354
Feb 27, 2025 (UTC-5)
Cambridge
What history does an immigrant have? How do immigrant images of “their own” history shift with relocation into another culture with its own historical narratives and concerns? How do such images change as their frames keep shifting? How can this mutability and uncertainty be expressed in the immigrant’s new language, which is not the language of the immigrant’s history, but rather carries the concepts and relations that express its own history? How can translation—domesticating translation, the kind that rewrites the source text to answer the demands of the target culture—be avoided? How does the immigrant learn to speak double? The poet and translator Eugene Ostashevsky will offer a personal take on these questions by reading and discussing poems on the siege of Leningrad in his latest collection, The Feeling Sonnets. Emphasizing the materiality of English in order to make it strange, the poems also incorporate snippets of other languages, including German. Lyn Hejinian called The Feeling Sonnets “an extraordinary and beautiful book,” while Jacqueline Saphra, writing in The Poetry Review (UK), described it as an “immense and multilingual opus of philosophy, language, pun and the absurd.” Ostashevsky will also discuss how the meaning of his poems has been shifted by the wars that took place after their composition.
