Writers Bloc Presents Chris Hayes | Writers Guild Theater
Feb 6, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Beverly Hills
HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. When was the last time you spent an hour without glancing at your phone or your tablet? Chris Hayes, one of our favorite thinkers on MSNBC, tells us we all suffer from a social disease that's wearing us down at this very second. If you can get through the next few sentences without checking your devices for the constant onslaught of incoming messages, you may not have as serious a case of attention deficit disorder (not the actual medical syndrome, but a corrosive social syndrome) as someone across the table from you. In his new book, The Sirens' Call, Chris takes us deep into the competition for our attention. The competition is profound, and the consequences on all sides are equally profound: for us as individuals, and for those who want us to notice that outreach, be aware of the messaging-- 24/7. The personal price we pay for the incoming onslaught is considerable, as is the commercial price. Mandatory reading for anyone with a mobile phone, a tablet, or a computer. That means you. Moderator to be announced. Did you know that you can make a fully tax-deductible donation? As a nonprofit organization, Writers Bloc Presents relies on support from people like you. Help us to remain a strong community as we continue to celebrate literature by authors we love, and explore critical contemporary issues. Please donate here. Other info: No refunds on tickets or books. Books must be picked up on the night of the program. Parking available in adjacent lots or there is street parking (please read signs).

Writers Bloc Presents Maureen Dowd and Todd Purdum | Writers Guild Theater
Mar 20, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Beverly Hills
HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. We love Maureen Dowd’s weekly takedowns and roundups of the personalities who have defined the news cycle. We have loved her as a political commentator, a cultural observer, and more important, as a social critic of our time. She’s not just about politics. Her new book Notorious features some of her great interviews with those who not only define the news, but visionaries who have created our American cultural identity. They’re chatty, funny, and of course deeply absorbing profiles of our most, well, notorious legends, moguls, tech titans, and creatives. What a range: Paul Newman; Idris Elba; Tina Fey; Elon Musk; Jane Fonda; Larry David; Mel Brooks. Let politics go for an evening and enjoy one of America’s great journalists as she explores touchstones in our culture, who have become some of the most notorious individuals in the world. In conversation with Todd Purdum. Todd Purdum has covered numerous beats for the New York Times, including the White House. He is a senior writer at Politico, a contributing editor covering politics at Vanity Fair, and was until recently a staff writer at The Atlantic. He’s also an author, and teaches journalism at USC’s Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism. His new book, Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television, will be released in June. Did you know that you can make a fully tax-deductible donation? As a nonprofit organization, Writers Bloc Presents relies on support from people like you. Writers Bloc and Book Soup Present Graydon Carter and Monica Lewinsky | Writers Guild Theater
Mar 30, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Beverly Hills
HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. Who among us doesn't love Vanity Fair? And if you do, it's because of visionary editor Graydon Carter. For 25 years, Graydon Carter in no small way helped to define-- and create-- contemporary pop culture, both here and in Europe. While Carter's resumé includes dazzling entries (including co-founding the defiantly satirical and hilarious Spy Magazine), it was Vanity Fair that catapulted Carter into the imagination of mainstream America and Europe. He molded Vanity Fair into a magazine that cheerfully embraced the highs and lows of American arts, culture, politics and commerce through features and photography by wonderful writers and great photojournalists. In his new book, When the Going Was Good: An Editor's Adventures During the Last Golden Age of Magazines, we see Carter's profound influence on American lifestyle and culture. While no longer steering Vanity Fair, he is now the co-founder of the indispensable digital magazine, Air Mail. Graydon Carter's inestimable impact cannot be understated: we see it not only in the glamour of the entertainment industry, but more important, in magazine journalism, just brimming with features and photography that have been so fundamental to our culture. When the Going Was Good spills over with great stories featuring outsize personalities. Graydon Carter cultivated wonderful writers, artists, and photographers when he ran Spy and Vanity Fair. And his own story is as captivating as any that appeared under his watch. Monica Lewinsky is the creator and host of the upcoming podcast, Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky. She has appeared in Vanity Fair many times, both as a subject and as a writer. Her name was once synonymous with presidential scandal, but Monica Lewinsky has reshaped her identity as she embraces activism in various areas, including in justice for women, cyberbullying, voter turnout, and more. She is a television producer (Impeachment: American Crime Story on FX; 15 Minutes of Shame on HBO; and the upcoming Hulu series on Amanda Knox) and crusader against bullying in any form.

We think the best relationships are forged when we are comfortable, relaxed and free of pressure. Preferring instead to think of the evening as a casual night out where one can truly be themselves. We do not use traditional 'speed dating' offerings such as bells, whistles and name-tags. Instead we focus on creating an atmosphere conducive to meeting others; a great venue, a personable host and a staff to assist.
Upon arriving at your chosen event - locate your event host. Your host will assist in setting you up with your scorecard for the evening. A simple and convenient way to keep track of whom you enjoyed meeting and those that you would like to see again. Should you have any questions - feel free to ask away. Take the time before the event starts to settle in - have a beverage if you would like and mingle should you wish. The speed dating portion of the event begins once all daters have arrived, checked in and had a moment or two to relax and unwind.
During the event, Ladies will stay seated and the Gentleman will rotate from table to table every 5 - 6 minutes. Our host will guide the Gentleman to let them know when their time is up and facilitate in seeing them to the next table. The goal is to find someone you would like to speak with further. Don't fret about figuring out if person is the one or the perfect person for you. Consider it the date before the date. Select those you would like to meet again and give the completed scorecard back to your host at the end of the evening. Our staff will tabulate the results and email you the following day with your results. If you choose someone and they chose you - it's a match. You will be given each others first name and email address. The rest is up to you.

For those that prefer the same simplified experience in Matchmaking, we offer our 'Date-Nights' free of contracts and commitments. With packages ranging from $595 to $945. For more information;

Jean-Michel Basquiat. Made on Market Street | Beverly Hills
Mar 7–Jun 1, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Beverly Hills
Between November 1982 and May 1984, Basquiat produced approximately a hundred paintings, numerous works on paper, and six silkscreen editions in Venice, California. For an artist closely affiliated with the New York art scene of the 1980s, Basquiat was extraordinarily prolific in Los Angeles. Made on Market Street reflects on this consequential era by bringing together nearly thirty works—several of which are among his most important paintings. Larry Gagosian notes, “Los Angeles has always been a great city for artists and Jean-Michel seemed to find it a refreshing change from New York. While the immensity of his talent was immediately apparent, it was nonetheless a highlight of my own career to work with him, to introduce him to Los Angeles, and to witness the amazing impact that his art and legacy have made on our culture.”
After first meeting Basquiat in 1981, Gagosian invited him to Los Angeles. Basquiat’s solo exhibition with Larry Gagosian Gallery in LA—the first time his work was presented on the West Coast—opened in April 1982, immediately following his first solo show in New York at Annina Nosei’s gallery. The Los Angeles exhibition was seen as the arrival of a significant voice by the public and collectors alike. In November 1982 Basquiat returned to California, living and working at Gagosian’s residence on Market Street, a three-story structure with an interior courtyard open to the light and air from the beach nearby.

TITUS KAPHAR: Exhibiting Forgiveness | Gagosian
Sep 13–Nov 2, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Beverly Hills
Gagosian is pleased to announce Exhibiting Forgiveness, an exhibition of new paintings by Titus Kaphar at the gallery in Beverly Hills. Shown here for the first time, this group of paintings is featured in the artist’s first narrative feature film, Exhibiting Forgiveness (2023), which debuted at Sundance this year and will be released theatrically nationwide on October 18.
The semi-autobiographical Exhibiting Forgiveness stars André Holland as Tarrell Rodin, an accomplished painter whose life is upended by an unexpected reunion with his father, La’Ron (John Earl Jelks), a recovering addict who hopes to rebuild a relationship with his estranged son. Tarrell, now an active and loving father and husband, is skeptical despite the encouragement of his mother. Written and directed by Kaphar, Exhibiting Forgiveness follows his documentary shorts Shut Up and Paint (2022, shortlisted in the Documentary Short Film category of the 95th Academy Awards) and The Jerome Project (2016)—the latter of which was inspired by a painting series initiated in 2014 exploring the artist’s relationship with his own estranged father. Exhibiting Forgiveness is a direct, though fictionalized, extension of The Jerome Project.
In addition to portraits, the Exhibiting Forgiveness paintings depict figures, façades of neighborhood houses, personal objects, and ephemera. These are emotionally and intellectually charged pieces. The paintings preceded the film; as Kaphar says, “they spring from the same personal, emotional and psychological well” that is the source for all his work. Combining a mastery of oil painting techniques with application of heterogenous mediums and innovative methods, Kaphar challenges conventional representation to provoke deep contemplations of family, community, and memory. Painting some canvases in highly saturated palettes and draining others of color, he combines gold leaf with tar—suggesting both divine transcendence and being stuck. Kaphar renders grief and loss, obscuring bodies, or removing them outright with knife-cut excisions. What remains is a testament to how we continue to live despite our wounds.

Sabine Moritz Frost | Beverly Hills
Nov 8–Dec 21, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Beverly Hills
Gagosian is pleased to announce Frost, an exhibition of new abstract paintings by Sabine Moritz. This is the artist’s second exhibition with the gallery and her first on the West Coast.
Moritz’s paintings, drawings, and prints envision moments suspended in time. In her earlier work, the artist juxtaposes interpretations of her immediate surroundings and signifiers of the natural world with deconstructed documentary images; in many of her recent canvases, she adopts a more narrative approach, which she augments by using a horizontal format. Continually altering and deploying a wide range of abstract and symbolic motifs, Moritz explores the dynamics of transience and decay in works that locate personal experiences within broadly shared histories.
Since 2015, Moritz has increasingly worked in an abstract mode, creating paintings that she dubs “psychological landscapes,” titled after elements, locations, months, seasons, and mythological entities. In these works, overlapping brushstrokes are allied with chromatic contrasts in improvised compositions. Searching for primal sensory experience, Moritz avoids preliminary sketching, confronting the viewer instead with an unmediated dialogue between color and gesture that addresses recollection and history in a consciously oblique, ambiguous manner.
In the twenty new canvases on view in Beverly Hills, Moritz presents dense arrays of painterly marks that harness the emotional power of color while retaining a consistent visual rhythm. With titles that refer to time and place, and to poetry—And the lovers lie abed, with all their griefs in their arms (D. T.) (2024) is taken from Dylan Thomas’s ars poetica “In My Craft or Sullen Art,” from his 1946 collection Deaths and Entrances—the works repay extended looking. Moritz applies pigment vigorously and in layers, sometimes as impasto, which is then scraped back to imbue the surface with a varied texture. Engineering collisions between shape and hue, she sometimes also suggests figures emerging from or disappearing into the works’ interlocking patterns. This establishes references to artists of different epochs who have integrated the human form into landscape paintings. Like frost, which seems suspended between liquid and solid conditions, Moritz’s figures exist in an enigmatic liminal state.
