Dr Bike – Free Bike Maintenance Session in Huddersfield | S2R Create Space
Jun 14, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Huddersfield
Back by popular demand! Walk Wheel Ride Huddersfield - your local Active Travel Hub - is pleased to offer our second free workshop for bike checks. A mechanic will check everything on your bike from wheels, brakes, gears and tyre pressure to lights, racks, pedals, saddles and more. They can make any minor adjustments to the bike there and then. If there’s anything they can't fix on site, they will let you know exactly what needs doing and a rough guide to what it should cost at a bike shop. A check typically takes around twenty to thirty minutes. Please book to guarantee your Dr Bike check (1 bike per thirty-minute slot) and arrive five minutes before your booked slot. Drop-ins may still be available on the day, but bookings will be prioritised. Walk Wheel Ride Huddersfield is working to make it simpler, safer and more accessible for everyone in the district to choose walking, wheeling and riding as part of their everyday journeys. We want to help more people choose active travel more often for their local journeys. We hope Dr Bike will give you the confidence to get back on your bike again.

Trees in a Watercolour Landscape: Stephen Coates | Calder Art
Jun 28, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Huddersfield
Painting trees in any landscape often proves challenging for the watercolour artist, particularly when they are in full leaf in the summer. What is the true shape and structure of a tree? What techniques can we use to create realistic foliage? Which colours should we use and which brushes work the best?
This workshop will answer all these questions plus much more. Composition, colour and paint consistency will all be covered with some handy exercises along the way. We will put all this together and produce an engaging landscape painting.
About the Artist
Having spent most of his early years drawing in pencil and charcoal, Stephen decided to specialise in watercolours. However, like everyone else on the planet, he found it difficult and frustrating. He embarked on a long road of self learning and eventually gained an extensive understanding of the watercolour medium and developed his own unique style.
Stephen soon realised that his early frustrations with watercolours were shared by countless leisure artists all over the country. So much so that he set up as a teacher, runs courses and workshops, demonstrates at art societies and has written his own tuition book entitled - The watercolour enigma.
Stephen has a charismatic presentation style and likes to entertain a little too which keeps everyone on their toes and assists with the learning process. As well as painting live, he uses screen projections, engages the audience and explains precisely how the watercolour medium is unique. His enthusiastic teaching skills will certainly leave you with much to think about and provide many fresh ideas that you will want to try out yourselves.

Sites from Slaithwaite's Radical Past | Slaithwaite Health Centre
Jul 13, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Slaithwaite
The walk, led by Cyril Pearce, will take approx. two hours and parts of it may be challenging for those with mobility issues.
Meet at the New Street carpark opposite the Slaithwaite Health Centre
The tides of English radicalism in the 18th and 19th centuries have swirled through Slaithwaite and in local memories they've left more than Victor Grayson and the 1907 by-election. The struggle between landlords with a particular world view and local people who did not share it, began much earlier than that and its marks remain in surviving local buildings, many named for 'Slaithwaite' but some of them across the border in Linthwaite.
