A John Waters Christmas | Old Dutch Church
Dec 16, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Kingston
A John Waters Christmas: Live in KingstonHelp! It’s Christmas! To hell with Santa, Rudolph, Mrs. Claus and, yes, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, too!
We’re not sitting on that man’s lap this year!
Nosirree, not getting down on our knees for anybody either. All you need to get through this holiday season is John Waters; St. Nick the Dick, Father Fistmas, Kris Kringleberries! Ho ho ho was never like this! Once again Waters is touring the country on his slippery sled of sewage with his comedy bag of tricks, handing out filthy sticks and stones to bad little nonbinary boys and girls and everybody in between and beyond. Ninety minutes of Christmas jeer and holiday beatings! Go ahead, teabag that tree with your own balls and then knock it over on yourself on purpose! Scream, drag queens and kings, scream! Yes! We’re all getting cha-cha heel s this year! Postage-due Christmas cards, too. We want gift-wrapped get-out-of-jail holiday coupons! Mistle-toejam! As Dawn Davenport would say, We asked and we’d better get!” Happy hole-iday! Merry Diss-mas! We’re the gift that keeps on desperate living. It’s a John Waters Christmas and you’d better watch out! ******************************************************************************************************* A John Waters Christmas contains explicit and potentially controversial content; all attendees should be 18+. The original church structure, built on the present site in 1660, actually was one corner of the Stockade which Peter Stuyvesant ordered built as fortification. Wiltwyck later became the village of Kingston after the British took over the colony and renamed it New York. The original structure was largely destroyed by fire in the Esopus Indian raid of 1663. Rebuilt and enlarged several times, the church was again burned during the American Revolution by British forces in October of 1777.
During the Revolution, the church, and its congregation, aligned itself with the rebel or patriot cause. As a result, in November of 1782, Gen. George Washington visited the church. A hand-written letter by Washington regarding his reception at the church is proudly on display in the Narthex of the church. It is significant to note that during the entire eight years of the American Revolution, this was Washington’s only reference to a religious institution.
Over the years, many ecumenical services have been held at Old Dutch Church to commemorate significant events. In 1901, the church held one of the official funeral services for President William McKinley after his assassination in Buffalo, New York. Within hours of the sinking of the Titanic on April 12, 1912, a memorial service for the victims of the disaster was held in our Sanctuary. And most recently, on the evening of September 11, 2001, Old Dutch Church was again the site of a community outpouring of shock and grief as we struggled to cope with the attacks on our country.
In 1932, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, then Governor of the State of New York, addressed the church at the 150th commemorative service of the visit of General George Washington. Among the other more recent notable speakers who have presented at church functions are Congressman Hamilton Fish, Jr., Norman Vincent Peale, Brigadier General James E. Cartwright, USMC, Assistant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and historian Heywood Hale Broun.
The Old Dutch Church is not only interested in preserving and educating the public about its own history but frequently takes a pro-active role in protecting the secular history of the community as well. For example, when Kingston’s old City Hall became a virtually derelict building, church members removed the surviving bas-relief plaster lunettes depicting the city’s history to the basement of the church, thus preventing their total destruction. Now, with the financial help of Old Dutch Church as well as many others, the lunettes have been refurbished and returned to City Hall which was renovated in 2000.
In 2008, Old Dutch Church was declared a National Historic Landmark by the Federal government and in 2009 we celebrated our 350th Anniversary!

"Meet the Artist" with Morrison Gong | 25 Dederick St
Jan 30, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Kingston
On Thursday, January 30, we welcome Morrison Gong to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Grounded in historical and philosophical references, Gong explores how the violence, mourning, transgressions, and migrations their ancestors had to endure converge to shape their identity as a Chinese immigrant woman. Often, Gong invites materials that carry spiritual and symbolic meanings, such as hand-carved jade cicada, oxidized iron, brass bells, braided hair, to perform rituals that evoke the immaterial plane. They use animism and polytheistic religions as frameworks to think about colonial exploitation and channels of healing, purifying and restoring the balance between us and the ecosystem we inhabit. Gong is passionate about a photograph’s ability to anchor our pain and losses within the realms of the physical and the metaphysical. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s YouTube page at 6pm. Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 25 Dederick Street in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation. Morrison Gong is a Chinese photographer with a background in performance and experimental filmmaking. Their video works have been shown at Anthology Film Archives, Microscope Gallery, Vox Populi Gallery, the Filmmakers Cooperatives, CROSSROADS presented by San Francisco Cinematheque, Millennium Film Workshop, Hong Kong Arthouse Film Festival, among others. Their photography has been featured on It’s Nice That, Whitehot Magazine and Lomography Magazine. Gong received their BFA from Parsons School of Design and their MA at the New School for Social Research. They are based in Brooklyn, NY.

Kaleta. The singer/guitarist from the West African country of Benin Republic lived his adolescent life in Lagos, Nigeria where Afrobeat was born. Kaleta's guitar chops earned him decades of touring and recording with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Lauryn Hill and more.
Kaleta got his start in the late 70s performing in church and was soon after picked up by iconic Juju master and world music pioneer King Sunny Ade. A few years later Fela Kuti came calling. Now based in New York City, Kaleta has been leading Super Yamba Band since 2017. Their debut album Mèdaho, which was released by California indie label Ubiquity Records, draws on the group’s shared reverence for the raw, psychedelic sounds that captivated Kaleta as a music loving kid in 1970s Benin. Mèdaho means big brother, elder or teacher and is dedicated to Kaleta's late brother Ligan-Ozavino Pascal who introduced him to funk and soul music at a very early age. The album was included on Bandcamp’s “Best Albums of Summer 2019” list and two of the songs were chosen for the ABC/Hulu series High Fidelity starring Zoe Kravitz. Support by FACTOR

Three-time Olivier Award-winner Sharon D Clarke is joined by Ncuti Gatwa (Doctor Who, Sex Education) in this joyful reimagining of Oscar Wilde’s most celebrated comedy. While assuming the role of a dutiful guardian in the country, Jack lets loose in town under afalse identity. Meanwhile, his friend Algy adopts a similar facade. Hoping to impress twoeligible ladies, the gentlemen find themselves caught in a web of lies they must carefully navigate. Max Webster (Life of Pi) directs this hilarious story of identity, impersonation and romance, filmed live from the National Theatre In London.
