dir. Agnès Varda France 1985 106’ (cert 15)part of Franki Raffles: Viewpoints (Film Screenings)
Wed 26 Feb 2024 | 18:30
Level 1 Cinema
Tickets £5 / £3.50 Concessions Mona Bergeron (Sandrine Bonnaire) is dead, her frozen body found in a ditch in the French countryside. From this, the film flashes back to the weeks leading up to her death. Through these flashbacks, Mona gradually declines as she travels from place to place, taking odd jobs and staying with whomever will offer her a place to sleep. Mona is fiercely independent, craving freedom over comfort, but it is this desire to be free that will eventually lead to her demise. ‘Surely one of Agnès Varda’s greatest films: enigmatic, possessed of a cool artistry in its structural asymmetries and inconsistencies, and as gripping as any thriller.’ — The Guardian ‘The film is so startling because its protagonist is a woman. We’ve seen male drifters and loners throughout film history. A man alone has a reason, and his isolation is therefore noble. A male drifter is doing penance for something for which he was found innocent but for which he cannot forgive himself. A woman alone is crazy.’ — The Paris Review Franki Raffles: ViewpointsThis event is part of a series of films in our cinema on Wednesday evenings which further expand on themes of labour and feminism in Franki Raffles’ exhibition. Hannah Perry: In Conversation
Wed 5 Mar | 17:45-20:00
Level 1
£5pp / £3.50 concessions
Join artist Hannah Perry and special guests for an evening of discussion on sculpture and the body and life transitions, to celebrate the conclusion of Perry’s major solo exhibition Hannah Perry: Manual Labour. Perry is known for her psychologically-charged installations that explore industry, class and gender. Her work captures the effects of economic forces, and shifting cultural and social values, on our mental health. Manual Labour is an immersive environment that includes a choreographed mechanical sculpture which considers the physical act of labour. The work captures the beauty and struggle of the transition in the sculpture’s brutal, constrained power. The film explores the questions posed by the transition into motherhood. Jumping through personal and shared memory, the work exploits the material and textural qualities of the medium. Reflected images, spoken elements and soaring sound reflect the complex layering of the process. Together, the works in Manual Labour evoke the dizzying and disorientating aspects of transitional periods in life, their potential to shatter our ideas of ‘self’ and the work of rebuilding identity. If you're unable to attend the event, we are unfortunately unable to refund your ticket.

Artist Talk: Ali Cherri
Sat 12 Apr | 14:00
£5pp / £3.50 concessions (student/unwaged)Ali Cherri will take part in an Artist Talk with curator Emma Dean at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead on the opening day of his new exhibition How I Am A Monument. Exploring different geographies of violence in his native Lebanon but also in the broader region, Ali Cherri is a Paris-based artist with three decades of artistic practice spanning film, sculpture, installation, drawing and performance, interrogating the ways in which political violence is witnessed and disseminates into people’s bodies, and how it scars the physical and cultural landscape. Cherri was born in Beirut in 1976, a year into the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990). Cherri’s practice is inspired both by archaeological artefacts and the natural world. He explores violence against bodies, objects and nature in regions of conflict, and visualises history and cultural value not as something neutral or universal, but as constructed narratives, deeply influenced by colonialism, nationalism and geopolitics. His work considers the links between archaeology, historical narrative and heritage, reflecting on the processes of excavation, cultural loss and the relocation and preservation of artefacts in museums. If you're unable to attend the event, we are unfortunately unable to refund your ticket. AccessibilityWe want our events to be inclusive and accessible. In the world of Dandyism there is no masculine or feminine, there is no right or wrong. You are free to express your inner Dandy however you want. Just remember – it is about STYLE and COOL. Think outside the box. Dandyism isn’t about designer sites and expensive purchases. You aren’t buying a look created by someone else. You are exploring your own. Artist biography: Ziza is a multidisciplinary artist and a dance theatre maker of Rwandan heritage. He creates a variety of work that explores the themes of African traditions, and cultural norms, investigating the effect they have on people from the global south who were born or have lived in the western communities most of their lives. A special live linkup with members of the four Indigenous nations of La Chorrera, in the Colombian Amazon, forms part of the continued Open Research period for a new performance piece convened by artist Mark Maughan. The long term vision for the project is a bi-national, interdisciplinary piece that brings to light a genocide fuelled by UK investment that happened at the height of the rubber boom during the twentieth century. Roger Casement was the Irish-born British diplomat sent to La Chorrera by the UK government in 1911. What Casement found moved him to write a report so damning that Parliament called the Putumayo Atrocities Select Committee and all British investment was withdrawn as a result of its findings. Made in collaboration with the four Indigenous nations still living in La Chorrera to highlight the unheard perspectives of this story, long term, the work will be an act of poetic justice that seeks to reconcile the damage done during a forgotten chapter of the UK’s colonial history. A previous edition of the Open Research programme took place at Battersea Arts Centre, through a week-long programme in collaboration with thinkers, makers and activists from both sides of the Atlantic. In this GIFT edition, audiences will hear the context around the project before a guided conversation takes place exploring themes related to the work, guided by questions prepared with restorative justice experts, including a live linkup with people from the four nations Mark is working with in La Chorrera.
