Ruben Drenth's 'Bonsaika Suite' - Tip: for fans of Mort Garson's Plantasia | Vestdijk 25

'Bonsaika Suite': a suite written and played for the bonsaist, also known as bonsaika. These are the people who cut, shape, bend, prune and care for the same tree for years. In short: people who know from the start that it will take a long time, and who start anyway. With this project, Ruben Drenth wants to introduce his audience to the beauty of bonsai and the attention it requires, but can also bring about. On the other hand, he also wants to show that you can mindfully fly off the handle and seek out the sharp edges. It's not just peace and quiet that counts! Together with double bassist Daniël Muskitta, he plays this suite in its entirety and takes you into the sound world of bonsaiists, full of improvisation, Philicorda organ, synthesizer and ambient soundscapes. Tip: for fans of Mort Garson's Plantasia About Ruben: Trumpeter Ruben Drenth (1997) maneuvers his way through catchy, sing-along melodies and abrasive, brutal solos. In his playing he is always looking for an honest, sincere sound with a good dose of risk. With the Ruben Drenth Trio he graduated from the HKU in 2018 with a program full of raw energy and improvisation. In 2023 he released an album under the name How To Gather Moss on which he transformed the music of The Rolling Stones into compelling and tearing improvisations. He also toured with Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Thomas Oliemans, in a duo with Bert van den Brink, with Dion Nijland's quintet DEON, with Egon Kracht & The Troupe, in the band of folk singer Robin Borneman, The Tambles and with The Jerry Hormone Ego Trip. With this last band he played at Oerol, Into The Great Wide Open and Eurosonic Noorderslag, among others. Information Source: Paviljoen Ongehoorde Muziek | eventbrite

Druk Luyang Bram Stadhouders - guitar Joos Lijbaart - drums Sonam Dorji, one of the better-known Bhutanese singers. A Buddhist Kingdom north of Nepal. Druk Luyang is a new project by guitarist and composer Bram Stadhouders, percussionist Joost Lijbaart and the Bhutanese singer and musical heritage bearer Sonam Dorji. A meeting of three worlds, in which age-old Buddhist traditions merge with ambient soundscapes, improvisation and Western lyricism. During a tour in 2023, Stadhouders and Lijbaart were the first Dutch jazz musicians to perform in Bhutan, at the invitation of the Hidden Kingdom Music Festival. There they met Sonam Dorji, a key figure in the preservation and dissemination of Bhutanese traditional music. In the days that followed, recordings were made in which Dorji's devotional singing and compositions were given a new perspective by the timbres of guitar, electronics and percussion. Druk Luyang – literally “the music of the dragon” – is an ode to the mystical atmosphere of the Himalayas. The result is a meditative but layered sound universe in which East and West meet in a natural way. Bram Stadhouders (Tilburg, 1987) is one of the most adventurous guitarists of his generation. With performances in more than 60 countries, projects with the Netherlands Chamber Choir and countless groundbreaking albums, he moves at the intersection of jazz, contemporary classical and electronic music. Joost Lijbaart gained international fame with Yuri Honing Trio and is known for his versatile, melodic approach to drums and percussion. He has worked with musicians such as Ibrahim Maalouf, Wolfert Brederode and Rima Khcheich. Sonam Dorji is an advocate of Bhutanese folk music and director of the Bhutan Music Institute in Thimphu. He masters several traditional instruments such as the dranyen (Bhutanese lute), and contributes worldwide to keeping his musical heritage alive.
