Rebecca Solnit's NO STRAIGHT ROAD TAKES YOU THERE Book Launch and Signing | Brower Center
May 14, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Berkeley
Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore presents a very special evening at The David Brower Center when award winning and bestselling author Rebecca Solnit launches her new book
No Straight Road Takes You There: Essays for Uneven Terrain.
Rebecca will be joined in what is sure to be a lively discussion by special guest(s) to be announced and she will sign copies of her book after the presentation.
This is a ticketed event with Rebecca's book bundled with your admission ticket. Tickets are available for one book and one seat for $21.95 (+ taxes and fees) or one book and two seats for $26.95 ( + taxes and fees).
“This is a book of fierce and poetic thinking—and a guide for navigating a rapidly changing, non-linear, living world.”
—Merlin Sheldrake, author of
Entangled Life
In the spirit of her bestselling book
Hope in the Dark
, Rebecca Solnit explores how our actions can shape the future and the liberatory possibilities of embracing uncertainty.
Beginning with an essay about a three-hundred-year-old violin and what it can tell us about forests, abundance, and climate, and ending with one about a prisoner dreaming of seeing the ocean,
No Straight Road Takes You There
deftly bridges the political and the literary, offering unique insights, nuanced understanding, and inspiration for the challenging work ahead. In her latest essay collection, the award-winning author explores climate change, feminism, democracy, hope, and power and its abuse. Throughout she asks us to heed the stories we tell or have been told, and the ways those stories can be, or should be changed. Solnit offers a reappraisal of the value of indirect consequences, an embrace of unpredictability, slowness, and imperfection in the politics of how to change the world.
“I've tried to find other ways of seeing and to prize the migratory routes ideas take,” Solnit writes in the introduction, “the way that hope is most often grounded in memory, because you can't see the future but you can understand the patterns and possibilities if you know the past.”
REBECCA SOLNIT
is the author of more than twenty books, including
Orwell’s Roses; Hope in the Dark; Men Explain Things to Me; A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster
; and
A Field Guide to Getting Lost.
A longtime climate and human rights activist, she serves on the boards of Oil Change International and Third Act.
THIS EVENT will start promptly at 7:00 PM so please be on time.
DOORS will open at 6:15 PM

Finissage for Rise and Fall featuring a screening of Two Bob Mermaid | Wollongong Art Gallery
Jun 1, 2025 (UTC+10)ENDED
Wollongong
See off Karla Dickens: Rise and Fall with a celebratory afternoon at the gallery. As part of the festivities we will be screening Two Bob Mermaid (1996) by Darlene Johnson at 2pm. As Romaine Moreton writes (for the National Film and Sound Archive): Two Bob Mermaid is the directorial debut of Darlene Johnson. It is the story of Koorine (Carrie Prosser), a fair skinned Indigenous girl who ‘passes’ – allowing people to think you are white. Koorine dreams of becoming a famous swimmer. The title of the film refers to Esther William’s film Million Dollar Mermaid, a 'two bob’ mermaid creating a correlation between class and dreams. In order to achieve her dream Koorine lets the townspeople think that she is white so that she can gain access to the local swimming pool from which Aboriginal peoples are banned. Two Bob Mermaid is visually stunning, and Johnson manages to tell quite a political story through the eyes of a child, whose innocent tendency to dream is restricted by the political restrictions imposed upon Aboriginal people during the period the film is set (1950s). The banning from swimming pools was a reality for Indigenous people up until racism was outlawed in Australia. Dr Charles Perkins during the Freedom Rides of 1967 encouraged Indigenous people to fight the bans. Indigenous peoples were made citizens of this country after the 1967 referendum.

Portable Intersectionality: Roxane Gay in conversation with Alicia Garza | Freight & Salvage

Roxane Gay in conversation with Alicia Garza, moderated by Aya de Le

. Introduction by Aya de Le
ó

Introductory live music performance by Bushwick Book Club Oakland
Freight & Salvage
As critical works and perspectives are being increasingly censored by the federal government’s hypocritical campaign for its distorted vision of “free speech,” our strategies for organizing and mobilizing communities must adapt to most effectively resist these attacks on justice. Here with an urgent reminder that feminism is expansive rather than definitive is Haitian-American writer and self-proclaimed “bad feminist”
Roxane Gay
, whose latest collection,
The Portable Feminist Reader
, depicts the feminist canon as one that represents a long history of feminist scholarship, embraces skepticism, and invites robust discussion and debate. According to the Starred
Library Journal
, she “provides accessible entry points into feminism and offers even advanced scholars new ways of viewing the complex, intersectional histories of feminist thought, literature, and action” by presenting multicultural perspectives, ecofeminism, feminism and disability, feminist labor, gender perspectives, and Black feminism. Intersectionality and having diverse voices is crucial in the fight for justice, and in conversation with Gay is another powerful voice in media and co-creator of #BlackLivesMatter and the Black Lives Matter Global Network,
Alicia Garza
, who will be the first to say that “hashtags don’t start movements. People do.” Thus, the first step forward is to equip oneself with knowledge from experts like Gay and Garza, who encourage people to carry their power within, allowing them to adapt and transform, but never conform, in their intersectionality.

Let's Talk About AI - Featuring Robert Todd | Berkeley City Club
Jun 4, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Berkeley
For the first time in our history, we have created a technology that can have an opinion
about us.
Opinions, as well as ideas and points of view, are the products of intelligence, and, until recently, we were the only intelligence in town. However, we are entering the Age of AI, of machine intelligence, and the choices we make about this incredible invention will have profound consequences for our species.
Robert Todd, one of UC Berkeley’s most popular OLLI instructors, will help us better understand this invention at Arts & Culture on Wednesday, June 4, at 7 p.m. Known for his wit and clear explanations, he briefly will discuss how AI was developed, what it can and cannot do, and what it means to have this new intelligence readily available. His illustrated presentation will include demonstrations of AI.
If you have dabbled with AI — using tools like Chat GPT, Claude, Grammarly, or Gemini — you will gain a deeper appreciation for the vast potential now at your fingertips. If you are blissfully unaware of what AI is and can do, you will leave with a tangible introduction and, hopes Robert, a desire to learn more.
Tickets for this program are $5 for club members and students and $10 for non-members. Please register early so we can be sure to accommodate everyone comfortably.
“Robert is a remarkably knowledgeable and enthusiastic speaker,” says BCC member Susan Newman, who, along with several other members, is taking her third class from Robert. “All of us are quite excited by the course as well as his command of this rapidly changing field.”
For three decades, Robert has worked at the confluence of technology, learning, and human behavior. As a pioneer of e-learning in the late 1990s, he helped revolutionize the way people acquire knowledge. From 2006-2011, he was Global Director of Learning Technology at
McKinsey & Company
, where he built the firm’s first e-learning technology. At San Francisco State, he created some of the earliest online courses. His passion for leveraging technology to enhance education and change behavior also led him to leadership roles at organizations like
DigitalThink
, one of the first
e-Learning
companies to provide online mentors and tutors; and the professional networking site
LikedIn
. He currently splits his time as a lecturer on AI and advising a portfolio of AI-powered startups.
In addition, Robert continually adds to his website,
Rethinking Intelligence
. In contains a mix of thought-provoking essays, practical information about AI tools, and a comprehensive list of references.
Reserve your seat early to hear why Robert asserts: “AI is humanity’s most consequential invention. ”
