Understanding Past and Future Lives | Friends Meeting House
Jul 12, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Canterbury
A Transformative half-day course with Senior Buddhist Teacher Chelvi
Who am I, and where did I come from? What am I doing here? Where am I going? What does it mean to be alive? These are some of the questions we will be exploring in this course.
Buddha explained that our mental continuum is perpetual, a ceaseless cycle of consciousness; whereas our physical bodies are exceedingly fragile and impermanent. In reality, we are travellers bound for our future lives. This world is not our eternal home. By understanding the nature of our mind and consequently the existence of past and future lives, we will gain a broader and wiser perspective on our life and on what comes next.
Through gaining insights into these fundamental Buddhist beliefs we become more peaceful, live with greater purpose and chart a course for future happiness and success.
This course is suitable for everyone from complete beginners to experienced meditators.
The meditations taught on this course come from the Buddhist tradition, but you don’t have to be a Buddhist to attend the course or practice the meditations.

Grasses, Sedges and Rushes - 2 day course | Old Sarum and The New Forest
Jul 14, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Salisbury
A 2-day course giving participants:
the skills and confidence to identify a wide range of grasses, sedges and rushes.
a simple way to identify grass species
an understanding of grasses as indicator species
a crib sheet listing the key features of the 90 most common species
a chance to see a wide range of lowland habitat types
These training days will give participants the confidence to identify a wide range of grasses and sedges (using largely non-flowering features) commonly encountered in a range of habitats.
The first day focuses on grasslands and calcareous habitats, looking at common species, as well as more specialised indicator species of meadows and unimproved grassland.
The second day will look at the species to be found in damp and acidic habitats, including heathlands, acid grasslands, bogs and mires.
Each day will cover roughly 30 species and will be run on the basis of people having no previous knowledge. In general, the mornings will involve teaching the species and the afternoons will involve revising and being tested on them.
The workshops will be carried out in several locations from the stunning New Forest to the hill-forts surrounding Salisbury, and provide the opportunity to discuss some of the conservation management issues of these habitats, as well as the difficulties of identifying grasses in grazed and mown habitats.
About the tutor
Dominic Price is a highly regarded botanical tutor and has been running courses for all levels of ecologists since 2007. Adverse weather
This is an outdoor run course on an exposed site, and as such we request that participants bring suitable clothing including sunhats, sunblock, and full waterproofs & fleeces. As the climate breaks down, we do occasionally have severe weather where either it is very difficult to take notes due to prolonged heavy rain, or temperatures have reached a point where long exposure can be detrimental to health.
In these instances, we will run a condensed version of the course, where we aim to see all the species before lunch but have less time to take notes on them. We will then give attendees free access to the corresponding online course for 24 hours, which means you can take notes and look at the species in more detail in the comfort of your home. We have built a corresponding online catalogue of courses for this purpose, and we therefore feel we can offer the same training experience while looking after attendees' welfare in the field.
Therefore if you look at the forecast before the course and start panicking - don’t worry, we’ve got you!
Course certificate
This course can be used as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). We invite attendees to download their own certificate and complete the numbers of hours spent on the course, as we are aware some attendees spend more time reading up about courses before the day, and writing their notes up and sitting the online course tests afterwards. The hours on your certificate should accurately reflect this time.
Feedback from previous courses
‘Excellent course. The teacher was very good indeed, and I thoroughly enjoyed the course ‘I learnt some brilliant identification tips to take away with me and it was good to learn about where you are likely to find species and which ones are indicators of good habitat/NVC communities’‘Really enjoyable course, felt like I learnt a lot which has really stuck since using it out in the field on my own. Not too many species that make it overwhelming.’ ‘Excellent course, thank you! I will definitely recommend this course to others.’‘Genuinely spot on, tutor was incredibly attentive to individual knowledge levels’

3 Day Dress Making Workshop- Beginners and Intermediate with Mary-Louise | Franklins Salisbury
Jul 16, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Salisbury
3 Day Dressmaking workshop - 16th, 23rd and 30th July 10am to 4pm
You are paying for all 3 days on this ticket
For the complete beginner through to those looking to expand upon their current skills.
This three day workshop focuses on helping you to develop the fundamental skills that will underpin this and future garment making projects. Through the practical activity of making your own garment you will gain and understanding of how to produce a well made and finished item. You will need to choose a pattern to use and suitable fabric. Alternatively if you have taken any of the pattern cutting workshops with Mary-Louise you may wish to make up a self drafted pattern.
Mary-Louise will guide you through the following aspects you are likely to encounter when garment making.
How to use the information on the pattern envelope
How to make the most of the pattern information sheets
Correctly identifying which size to make
Tissue fitting
Choosing and using the most appropriate interfacing
Following a lay plan to cut out your fabric
Understanding grainlines
Stay stitching
Understitching
Seam methods
Other techniques that may be covered will be dependant upon the pattern chosen and are likely to cover such things as:-
Seam types and finishing methods
Gathering and ease stitching
Collar construction
Facings
Waistbands
Cuffs
Bands
Buttons and buttonholes
Zip insertion
If you are a complete beginner aim to choose a pattern that has a small number of pieces and has limited details. It is better to make a simple item well before commencing onto a more complex pattern.
If you have some experience you might like to choose a pattern that has specific details you would like to improve upon or try for the first time.
For women use the bust measurement to choose the most suitable size for a garment for the top half of the body or a dress. DO NOT use the size that you normally use when purchasing clothes. If you take a bra cup size of D or above you
will need to take your over bust measurement and add 5cms to it to determine which size to use. You will get help to do a full bust adjustment to your pattern.
For men use your chest size.
Fabric choice will also be key to your success. The following aspects make a fabric harder to work with so consider your choice according to your experience and skill level:-
Very heavyweight or very lightweight
Silky and slippery
A complex pattern repeat, checks or strong stripes
The darker the fabric the more tricky it is if unpicking becomes necessary.
You will need to purchase the fabric requirements as outlined on the pattern envelope for your chosen size plus allow about 10% extra for any fitting changes that might need to be made. Also purchase a matching machine thread and any extras, again as indicated on the pattern. Interfacing can be purchased in store when attending and after appropriate choices have been explored in the first session.
It is advisable to make a mock up first to check for a good fit, so you will need something like an old sheet to use. Making a quick mock up is something that is highly recommended because it can save you time, effort and fabric in the long run as it gives you the opportunity to make changes to the fit that might not otherwise be possible. You are likely to need to do some work on your garments between each of the days, the amount of this will vary according to the complexity of your chosen garment and the amount of adjusting that may be necessary for a good fit.
If you are at all unsure about choosing a pattern and fabric your friendly knowledgeable Franklins’ staff will be happy to assist you.
You will also need to bring your own sewing kit. Machines are provided for your use.
Refreshments are supplied. You will need to bring a packed lunch.

Foraging for words
is an immersive open air writing retreat that will spark your creativity and inspire your inner wordsmith. Join us for a
1 DAY
event at
The Seastrand
where you'll be surrounded by nature's beauty as you dive into writing exercises and prompts designed to unleash your imagination. Connect with fellow writers, explore the great outdoors, and let the words flow in this unique retreat experience.
In this atmospheric immersive walking & writing workshop we’ll explore how ‘being in the moment’, in the natural landscape can open up pathways of creative inspiration, and get words moving!
We’ll start the day in the Seastrand, with coffee, refreshments and introductions- a chance to feel at home in our unique base for the day. There is no wifi and we recommend you leave laptops at home, bring an old fashioned notepad and pen and escape the world of technology to truly hone in on the landscape and your sensory responses to it.
After ‘foraging for words’ and other games and exercises during a seaside walk, you’ll take these ingredients as inspiration for starting a new idea back at the Seastrand- be it short story, spoken word or dialogue for a play. After a delicious lunch, of course.
