Our primary goal is to provide the most engaging displays possible, allowing us to tell historical narratives that entertain and educate our spectators. In our training sessions, we use blunt reproduction steel weapons and employ various martial arts principles such as footwork, balance, movement, timing, and technique. We also add dramatic flair through body language, vocalization, and special effects. It's not enough to be a skilled fighter; the key is to convey the emotions of a scared peasant conscripted into battle, enabling the audience to understand the character's plight. Open to participants aged 18 and above (16+ with parental permission), our training sessions accommodate various fitness levels and body types. The session plan begins with introductions and orientation at 7.45pm, followed by combat starting at 8pm and ending around 10pm. The session includes warm-ups, fitness and conditioning exercises, battle drills, and a cool-down period. Our experienced instructors ensure a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment. The first session is free, and subsequent sessions cost £3 each or £10 per month. Payments can be made in cash or via card. Training takes place weekly at the same venue and time. Remember to bring your own drink bottles, wear sensible sports shoes, and dress in loose-fitting clothing. During your initial sessions, you can borrow weapons and protective gloves. Shields will be provided by the group after completing the basic training (approximately 10 weeks). Additionally, you can purchase a kit for assembling your own protective gloves at £5, and re-enactment weapons are available for purchase from our blacksmith, Jason Green of Wieland Forge. Beyond combat, our Viking re-enactment community offers monthly talks and crafting sessions. In fact, 90% of our public displays focus on sharing knowledge and expertise with members of the public at events across the UK and beyond. Non-combatants are welcome to attend without signing up. On combat training weeks, there will be no structured activity, but tea and coffee will be available, and you can enjoy the company of fellow enthusiasts in our dedicated non-com room.
