Women in sport through the national collections | National Library of Scotland
Mar 27, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Join Imogen Gibbon, National Galleries of Scotland’s Chief Curator of Portraiture, and Rachel Beattie, National Library of Scotland’s Land and Sports Collections Curator, to explore Scottish women in sport. From fishing to mountaineering, football to golf, women have always been active participants in Scotland’s sporting heritage. Yet, despite a surge in interest in contemporary women’s sports, much of this rich history remains underrepresented. Through artworks, archival materials, and rare items from the collections of both the National Galleries and National Library of Scotland, Imogen and Rachel will shine a spotlight on the lives of sporting women across the centuries, revealing the enduring evidence of their achievements and contributions. This event offers a unique opportunity to explore Scotland’s overlooked sporting history and discover the extraordinary stories of women who have shaped the sporting world. This event is part of the Library’s Women’s History Month programme. About the speakers Rachel Beattiehas worked in the Archives and Manuscript Department of the National Library of Scotland since 2007. In her role as Land and Sport Curator, she works to collect, make accessible and engage people with the archives within her remit. Imogen Gibbon is Deputy Director and Chief Curator of Portraiture at the National Galleries of Scotland. She has curated several exhibitions, including ‘Playing for Scotland: the Making of Modern Sport’, which explored the transformation of sport in Scotland in the 19th and into the 20th century. He releases YELLOW HORSES, a pop-song album reminiscent of Feist, Sufjan Stevens, Lhasa, and even Leonard Cohen. “In this new album, I tell successful or failed love stories, I tell how sometimes we can put others before ourselves, I evoke the ecological emergency and the complexity of a world in which sometimes it's hard not to get lost. I do get lost quiet often. My music is like a plant that grows very quickly in a thousand directions at once, with dense foliage. In this frantic race sometimes a bud appears. If you stop and watch it grow, you can see a song blooming.
