Third Place Books welcomes journalist Brian Goldstone to our Seward Park store for a conversation about his groundbreaking book, There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America. He investigates the concerning uptick in housing insecurity for working people, following five Atlanta families as they fight to make ends meet. Goldstone is joined in conversation by Gregg Colburn, associate professor of real estate at the University of Washington’s College of Built Environments and the co-author of Homelessness is a Housing Problem: How Structural Factors Explain U.S. Patterns. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About There Is No Place For Us. . .NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEWEDITORS’ CHOICE • Through the “revelatory and gut-wrenching” (Associated Press) stories of five Atlanta families, this landmark work of journalism exposes a new and troubling trend—the dramatic rise of the working homeless in cities across America. “An exceptional feat of reporting, full of an immediacy that calls to mind Adrian Nicole LeBlanc’sRandom Familyand Matthew Desmond’sEvicted.”—The New York Times Book Review The working homeless. In a country where hard work and determination are supposed to lead to success, there is something scandalous about this phrase. But skyrocketing rents, low wages, and a lack of tenant rights have produced a startling phenomenon: People with full-time jobs cannot keep a roof over their head, especially in America’s booming cities, where rapid growth is leading to catastrophic displacement. These families are being forced into homelessness not by a failing economy but a thriving one. In this gripping and deeply reported book, Brian Goldstone plunges readers into the lives of five Atlanta families struggling to remain housed in a gentrifying, increasingly unequal city. Maurice and Natalia make a fresh start in the country’s “Black Mecca” after being priced out of DC. Kara dreams of starting her own cleaning business while mopping floors at a public hospital. Britt scores a coveted housing voucher. Michelle is in school to become a social worker. Celeste toils at her warehouse job while undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer. Each of them aspires to provide a decent life for their children—and each of them, one by one, joins the ranks of the nation’s working homeless. Through intimate, novelistic portraits, Goldstone reveals the human cost of this crisis, following parents and their kids as they go to sleep in cars, or in squalid extended-stay hotel rooms, and head out to their jobs and schools the next morning. These are the nation’s hidden homeless—omitted from official statistics, and proof that overflowing shelters and street encampments are only the most visible manifestation of a far more pervasive problem. By turns heartbreaking and urgent, There Is No Place for Us illuminates the true magnitude, causes, and consequences of the new American homelessness—and shows that it won’t be solved until housing is treated as a fundamental human right. Brian Goldstone is a journalist whose longform reporting and essays have appeared in The New York Times, Harper’s Magazine, The New Republic, The California Sunday Magazine, and Jacobin, among other publications. He has a PhD in anthropology from Duke University and was a Mellon Research Fellow at Columbia University. In 2021, he was a National Fellow at New America. He lives in Atlanta with his family. Gregg Colburn is an associate professor of real estate at the University of Washington’s College of Built Environments. He publishes research on topics related to housing and homelessness and is co-author of the book Homelessness is a Housing Problem: How Structural Factors Explain U.S. Patterns. Gregg holds an MSW and PhD from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from Northwestern University. Prior to academia, he worked as an investment banker and private equity professional. Gregg is co-chair of the University of Washington’s Homelessness Research Initiative and is a member of the National Alliance to End Homelessness Research Council. Comedy
LUKE SEVEREID and SCOTT LOSSE are back in BURIEN Burien WA / Flight Path / June 6th & 7th a little about the comedians... LUKE SEVEREID is a hill-hiking, metal-music-loving, chrome-dome-having stand-up comedian from Seattle, WA. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest with the plaids and IPA-fueled husk to prove it, he has spent the last decade yelling jokes all over the US and Canada, and just got back from a Sold Out tour of Australia as a part of KNOTFEST LUKE’s comedic style has been described as insightfully idiotic, aggressively absurd, and most accurately, unmedicated ADHD in action. Besides looking identical to your favorite bouncer/bass player, Luke was also recently in the Big Sky Comedy Festival, a semifinalist in the Seattle and San Francisco International Comedy Competition, and a winner of Best Comedy Film at HUMP! Film Festival. Millions have enjoyed his stand-up videos online, and no matter who you are or where you’re from, he is GUARANTEED to get a giggle or two out of you. SCOTT LOSSE is a stand-up comedian and content creator from Burien, Washington. He has been featured on Dry Bar Comedy, Outside Magazine, and Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Scott has become well known for his short-form content and observational humor about the outdoors and living in the Pacific Northwest. His stand-up is absurd and relatable. People like it. His album Popular Donuts is now available on Spotify and his Dry Bar Special Okay in on YouTube and has a billion billion views. Early Bird $15 General Admission $20 VIP Booth $60 (comes with dedicated server and complimentary drinks) FAQ Q: What is this event? A: You know that thing you like to do called laughing? That's whats going to happen here. Professional Dopamine DEALERS will bring you joy and mirth and all kinds of other synonyms for serotonin fueled emotions ALSO known as a Stand UP Comedy Show Q: Are you funny? A: Depends on the day and who you are. I know on Saturdays around 8 PM I am HILARIOUS(lets not even talk about Tuesdays ok...) we've both been performing stand up for over12 years and regularly have people come to see me again ON PURPOSE. Check out a video and decide for yourself: https://youtu.be/Gn5pEc37DUs and https://youtu.be/LRV3u7Q_zYE?si=FZijcgv00VQZJAFv Q: Is this a Family Friendly Show? A: Depends how cool your family is. If you're sensitive to adult topics or language, this probably is not the show for you. If you're the type of person who leaves yelp reviews, maybe stay home and think about what you’re ultimately trying to get out of life. Again, google costs none money to use. Q: Is there a break? A: The show is continuous and runs about 90 minutes give or take. Q: Will drinks be available? A: Yes! Check out the venue's website for a menu! Q: Where is the venue? A: Oh boy... new to the internet? That's cool just click the venue's name above and it'll have an address there. Q: Where do I buy tickets? A: There's literally a button that says buy tickets on this page. Q: What time do doors open? A: 7:30 PM Q: Can my business get involved? A: Yes! Please email me if you want to sponsor the event. We'll shout you out at the show opening and if you pay enough, I'll stop the show every 5 minutes and tell everyone how amazing your product is. Q: Explain the ticket types? A: If there are early bird tickets, those are cheap, first come, first serve tickets for people on a budget or people without commitment issues. Some venues don't let me do it. Regular Bird(General Admission) is just a ticket to the show. but that doesn't mean it's not special. Can you put a price on a night of laughter and joy and probably sex(jokes)? VIP ticket will reserve you a ticket close to the front and I'll give you a free beer koozie at the show ($700 value!). This is basically a way of throwing me some extra cash because you feel like it. Plus you don't have to go scouring the internet to find it. This is a self produced comedy show, which means 100% of ticket sales go to the artists performing. Thank you for supporting live comedy Q: Can I talk to the comics after the show? A: Absolutely! Luke & Scott are planning on hanging around and trying to get you to give them money in exchange for shirts and trinkets and other commodities. Information Source: Luke Severeid | eventbrite

About the Kula Academy : Since the pandemic, the Kula Academy has hosted nearly 600 classes and events. We’ve hiked sections of the PCT, summited volcanoes, paddled wild rivers, camped under starlit skies, painted, jumped into cold water for no good reason and danced — A LOT! Along the way, we’ve removed heaps of garbage from the Mountain Loop Highway, planted deciduous and evergreen trees, and taught people how to leave the world a better place. It's a corner of the universe where adventure, creativity and stewardship collide! Whether you’re here to master winter camping, learn “How Not to Die” doing the things you love, or simply because a pee cloth brought you our way, doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’re here! And we’re glad that our paths have crossed. We hope that you’ll join us on our adventures because you’re the missing ingredient in our trail mix. Come ready to laugh, learn, and leave with new friends and hopefully a deeper connection to others, yourself, and the world around us. Check out all of our classes here . Meet the Sammamish Council Candidates (Tuesday Evenings) | Pagliacci Pizza

Jun 10, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Sammamish
Conferences
Join us for a community conversation with Sammamish City Council candidates Karthik Seetharaman, Debbie Treen, and Josh Amato. This is your chance to meet the candidates, hear their vision for Sammamish, and share what matters most to you. There’s no stage and no speeches, just conversations about our city's future. Whether you’re focused on parks, traffic, growth, safety, or the city budget, or anything else, we want to hear from you. Karthik Seetharaman - Position 5 Karthik Seetharaman is a tech executive, immigrant, and father of three daughters running for Sammamish City Council. A former Planning Commissioner, he’s focused on protecting the community’s character while helping it grow responsibly. Karthik leads global teams at Amazon, bringing real-world experience in managing budgets, solving complex problems, and building systems that scale. He’ll bring that same discipline to City Hall by focusing on fiscal responsibility, emergency readiness, and infrastructure. He opposes high-rise towers and massive density increases in Town Center, and supports smarter development that fits Sammamish. He also believes new taxes should go to a public vote and supports creative, community-powered ideas like a teen-senior center, shared workspaces, and a botanical garden that boosts local pride and revenue. Karthik’s campaign is about thoughtful leadership, smart planning, and building a Sammamish that works for every resident. Debbie Treen - Position 7 Debbie Treen is a former Mayor, Chief Financial Officer and longtime public servant. As Mayor of Bothell, Debbie led the city to restrict property tax increases to the cost of living, at a time when the State maximum was 6%. Under her leadership, the Wayne Golf Course and Centennial Park land were purchased using King and Snohomish County Conservation Futures funding. Prior to being elected, she co-chaired a statewide land-use planning initiative and helped shape Washington’s Growth Management Act. She has over 15 years of experience as a Chief Financial Officer for nonprofits, publicly traded and private companies. In 2024 she retired from Cornish College of the Arts, after guiding the institution through economic shifts and budget challenges due to the pandemic. She’s running for Sammamish City Council to address its serious budget and growth management issues with community-first values. Josh Amato - Position 3 Josh Amato is a small business owner, nonprofit board member, former Sammamish Planning Commissioner, and active community volunteer. As a business owner for over a decade, Josh knows how to manage tight budgets, set clear priorities, and deliver results. That experience shapes his approach to leadership: practical, accountable, and focused. On the Planning Commission, he prioritized protecting Sammamish’s tree canopy and ensuring that new development reflected community values, not developer profits. Josh is running to restore focus at City Hall, rebuild public trust, and make local government work better for the people who live here. That starts with managing the budget responsibly, prioritizing infrastructure and emergency preparedness, and making sure every dollar delivers real value to residents. Mia Spangenberg with Elizabeth DeNoma — Pirkko Saisio's 'Backlight' | Third Place Books

Literary Arts
Third Place Books is pleased to welcome back translator Mia Spangenberg to our Ravenna store for a presentation on her recent translation of Finnish author Pirkko Saiso's novel Backlight, which follows a frustrated teenager into adulthood as she grapples with her queerness and her potential as a writer. Mia will be joined in conversation by translator and publishing consultant Elizabeth DeNoma. About Backlight . .Pirkko Saisio, now a teenager, can't decide which she hates most: God, her father, or her growing breasts. Grandpa has moved into the room long promised to her, and Mother, overworked and distant, tries to keep the peace between her headstrong daughter and husband. When she's not escaping into her books, Pirkko has fun getting into trouble. That is until her Finnish teacher suggests she might have what it takes to be a real writer, but only if she is willing to work hard and make certain sacrifices. Years later, Pirkko spends the historic summer of 1968 working at a Swiss orphanage. The world is shifting around her, and to make matters even more complicated: she's homesick. At the orphanage no one understands her German, and away from home for the first time, she struggles to make sense of her suppressed queerness. In Backlight, the Finlandia Prize-winning author looks backward and inward, once again emerging, in Mia Spangenberg's sensitive translation, with an intimate portrait of a life lived in language. Mia Spangenberg translates from Finnish, Swedish, and German into English. Her published translations include works by Finlandia-prize winning authors Mari Manninen and Pirkko Saisio and acclaimed children’s book author and illustrator Marika Maijala. She was awarded the American-Scandinavian Foundation’s 2023 Nadia Christensen Translation Prize for her translation of Pirkko Saisio’s Lowest Common Denominator (Two Lines Press, 2024; Penguin Modern Classics 2025). Dr. Elizabeth DeNoma is a Seattle-based translator from Scandinavian languages, as well as a publishing consultant, and foreign rights manager with deep expertise in international literature. Her most recent translation is Snow: A History by Sverker Sörlin coming out in September of 2025 published by Penguin Random House. Pirkko Saisio (b. 1949) studied drama and completed her actor’s training in 1975. Her debut novel The Course of Life (Elämänmeno, 1975) won the J. H. Erkko Award. Saisio has been nominated for the Finlandia Prize seven times, winning it in with The Red Book of Farewells (Punainen erokirja, 2003). She has, among other awards, received Aleksis Kivi Prize and State Literature Award. Apart from novels, she has written numerous plays and scripts for film and television and is a well-known theatre director.
