Theater
I Am an Artist; Where Is My Country, is a solo performance inspired by my life and divided into small segments. It portrays the challenges I faced as an actress in my home country. I decided to write the story of my life and bring it to the stage. A life filled with challenges and countless ups and downs. It depicts my journey as a female actress banned from working in Iran, and eventually my immigration to a new country, the United States. Immigrating to this country gave me the opportunity to finally perform freely and fearlessly after years of battling censorship in Iran. So, the play tells the story of artists like me, who are forced to leave their homeland to pursue their dreams. Why do girls score better at every academic subject than boys until puberty, when suddenly their scores plummet? Is the female brain wired differently? These questions and common debates around scientific claims are thoughtfully examined in this adaptation perfect for young people. This brand-new adaptation is a friendly, funny, and engaging read. It explores teen related topics such as mental health and the biology behind it, including insights on how adolescent brains are going through all kinds of changes, and shifting hormones. Author Cat Bohannon explains the roots of sexism and shows how, though it may have even served some evolutionary purpose long ago, it no longer serves us today, and it’s high time we leave it in the past. Filled with amazing stories of both past and present, Eve will delight any young reader looking to understand the body—its amazing history, its wondrous capability, its oddities and mysteries, and its relevance to so many issues captivating contemporary thought and discussion. Cat Bohannon is a researcher and author with a Ph.D. from Columbia University in the evolution of narrative and cognition. Her essays and poems have appeared Scientific American, Mind, Science Magazine, The Best American Nonrequired Reading, The Georgia Review, The Story Collider, and Poets Against the War. Literary Arts
Third Place Books is delighted to welcome Portland author Holly Brickley to our Ravenna store for the launch of her debut novel, Deep Cuts, a love story about two people pulled apart by the same force that draws them together: music. She will be joined in conversation by local essayist Claire Dederer. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Deep Cuts. . .It’s a Friday night in a campus bar in Berkeley, fall of 2000, and Percy Marks is pontificating about music again. Hall and Oates is on the jukebox, and Percy—who has no talent for music, just lots of opinions about it—can’t stop herself from overanalyzing the song, indulging what she knows to be her most annoying habit. But something is different tonight. The guy beside her at the bar, fellow student Joe Morrow, is a songwriter. And he could listen to Percy talk all night. Joe asks Percy for feedback on one of his songs—and the results kick off a partnership that will span years, ignite new passions in them both, and crush their egos again and again. Is their collaboration worth its cost? or is it holding Percy back from finding her own voice? Moving from Brooklyn bars to San Francisco dance floors, Deep Cuts examines the nature of talent, obsession, belonging, and above all, our need to be heard. Holly Brickleystudied English at UC Berkeley and received an MFA in fiction from Columbia University. Originally from Hope, British Columbia, she now lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and their two daughters. Deep Cuts is her first novel. Claire Dederer is the author of Love and Trouble, and the New York Times best-selling memoir Poser: My Life in Twenty-Three Yoga Poses, which has been translated into twelve languages. A book critic, essayist, and reporter, Dederer is a longtime contributor to The New York Times and has also written for The Atlantic, Vogue, Slate, The Nation, and New York magazine. She lives near Seattle with her family. Alternative to What? Experimental Strategies between the Wars from the Solander Collection Thursday, February 27, 2025 6-7:30pm Join us for a lecture with scholar and educator, Elizabeth A. Brown as she dives into the Solander Collection and works in the current PCNW exhibition, A New Look at Photo History: Treasurers from the Solander Collection. In the Solander Collection viewers encounter unfamiliar works by known photographers juxtaposed to new discoveries. The show is particularly rich in examples of experimental work made between the end of World War I and the onset of World War II. This lecture explores the wide experimentation and optimism—however wry and sardonic—in interwar period photography. Extraordinary pictures in the exhibition include works by Germaine Krull, Florence Henri, Hans Bellmer, Aleksander Rodchenko, Osamu Shiihara, and Man Ray. In close readings of these and other individual works Brown will analyze the variety of aesthetic goals and shifting contexts in art communities across Europe and elsewhere. For important updates, registration is highly recommended in advance. About Brother Brontë . . . Fernando A. Flores' imagination ranges from the grimmest realities, of blood and fire and life made small, all the way through to breathtaking hope, and surprise, and solidarity. Brother Brontë evokes Octavia Butler, William Gibson, and John Steinbeck; these are all my favorites, and with this book, Fernando A. Flores joins the list. —Robin Sloan, author of Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore Two women fight to save their dystopian border town—and literature—in this gonzo near-future adventure. The year is 2038, and the formerly bustling town of Three Rivers, Texas, is a surreal wasteland. Under the authoritarian thumb of its tech industrialist mayor, Pablo Henry Crick, the town has outlawed reading and forced most of the town’s mothers to work as indentured laborers at the Big Tex Fish Cannery, which poisons the atmosphere and lines Crick’s pockets. Scraping by in this godforsaken landscape are best friends Prosperina and Neftalí—the latter of whom, one of the town’s last literate citizens, hides and reads the books of the mysterious renegade author Jazzmin Monelle Rivas, whose last novel, Brother Brontë, is finally in Neftalí’s possession. But after a series of increasingly violent atrocities committed by Crick’s forces, Neftalí and Prosperina, with the help of a wounded bengal tigress, three scheming triplets, and an underground network of rebel tías, rise up to reclaim their city—and in the process, unlock Rivas’s connection to Three Rivers itself. An adventure that only the acclaimed Fernando A. Flores could dream up, Brother Brontë is a mordant, gonzo romp through a ruined world that, in its dysfunction, tyranny, and disparity, nonetheless feels uncannily like our own. With his most ambitious book yet, Flores once again bends what fiction can do, in the process crafting a moving and unforgettable story of perseverance. Fernando A. Floreswas born in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and grew up in South Texas. He is the author of the collections Death to the Bullshit Artists of South Texas and Valleyesque and the novel Tears of the Trufflepig, which was long-listed for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and was named a best book of 2019 by Tor.com. His fiction has appeared in Los Angeles Review of Books Quarterly, American Short Fiction, Ploughshares, Frieze, Porter House Review, and elsewhere. He lives in Austin, Texas.
