Freud e Homem dos Ratos: Perfomance em Português no Museu do Freud | Freud Museum London
Jun 28, 2025 (UTC+0)
London

Etching Fundamentals 5-day short course - 30 June-4 July 2025 | City & Guilds of London Art School
Jun 30–Jul 4, 2025 (UTC+0)
London
Dates: 30 June-4 July 2025Time: 10:00-17:00Fee: £625 / Early Bird: £585Level: Beginners (18+ years)Tutor: Laura ClarkeThis week long course offers the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Etching – hard ground, soft ground, aquatint and steel plate colour printing, and to gain an in depth knowledge into a process that has been used by artists for hundreds of years. But most importantly, get your hands inky and have fun! ‘It was a privilege to work in the historic print room and the tutor was very skilled in gently guiding each of us to achieve our learning goals.’ Lucie COURSE DESCRIPTIONWe are very proud of our historic Print Room, which has been central to practice at the Art School since the late 19th century and is quite a unique find these days. It gives students access to the Intaglio process in its historical context and offers the same experiences, in terms of techniques, problems and solutions, as faced by the Old Masters Rembrandt, Goya and Picasso. On our short course, you’ll learn how to make prints through the process of Intaglio Etching, a rare opportunity for students at this level. We’ll cover hard and soft ground, sugarlift aquatint, colour etching, as well as printing with collage and multiple plate printing. We’ll also examine the historical background of printmaking and how it has been used by artists from its origins to present day. The traditional Intaglio process involves various methods of ‘cutting’ an image into the surface of a metal plate, using waxy acid resists and then etching. Once the plate is inked, the incised lines hold the ink whilst the rest of the plate is wiped clean. The plate, in contact with damp paper, is passed through a roller press under pressure. The paper is forced into the sunken areas to receive the ink. By the end of the course you’ll have a confident understanding of the etching process, and you’re own prints to take home. Please note that the Print Room, where this course takes place, is accessed by a staircase. What’s included: all materials and sundries eg paper, inks, tools, metal and presses. What isn’t included: your meals, and please bring sketchbooks or images for ideas and inspiration. You’ll also need to bring aprons or old clothing you don’t mind getting inky and pencils, graphite, drawing materials. 10% discount available for City & Guilds of London Art School undergraduate, postgraduate and foundation students and alumni, and staff. Glass Sculpture: an Introduction to Pâte-de-Verre - 30 June - 4 July 2025 | City & Guilds of London Art School
Jun 30–Jul 4, 2025 (UTC+0)
London
Dates: 30 June-4 July 2025Time: 10:00-17:00Fee: £585 / Early Bird: £545Level: Beginners (18+ years)Tutor: Anne Petters‘Stones That Flow’—an ancient glass fusing technique reimagined Explore the pâte-de-verre process and make your own small unique objects using this ancient glass making technique. Using a variety of mold-making materials, this unique process will allow us to transfer drawings, writing and texture onto glass. We shall treat this as a printing process and create flat and hollow plaster/molochite molds onto which we fuse glass frits and powders. 'It was an incredible week. The tutoring, the fabulous knowledge generously imparted to us, the sharing of ideas, the professionalism and encouragement of the tutor Anne Petters and the superb glass technician helper Mils.' Judith COURSE DESCRIPTIONThe glass making technique pâte-de-verre dates back to the second millennium BC. Mostly used in jewellery and sculpture inlays in ancient Egypt and Rome, it was widely forgotten until its rediscovery in late 19th century France, where it became popular during the Art Nouveau period. The French term ‘pâte-de-verre’ translates as ‘glass paste’. Glass powders and frits (crushed glass) are mixed with a medium to a paste that can then be applied to flat and hollow molds and fused in the kiln, at about 700 degrees celsius, to take the shape. Described as ‘stones that flow’ in ancient Egypt, the glass has an unusual opalescent aesthetic with the ability to mimic various materials like stone, ice, sugar and fabric. Pâte-de-verre is currently experiencing an exciting come back in the art and craft world. This course is an introduction to this unusual yet easy to learn process and you will learn how to create unique personal sculptural objects and understand basic kiln firing schedules. We will take imprints from different objects and textures in clay and carve into plaster/molochite molds using various traditional and experimental tools for mark making. These textures, marks and drawings will then be transferred to the glass by applying the powders, dry or as a paste, to the mold and bake them in the kiln. From there, your work can be taken back into the kiln to further manipulate the shape by slumping and forming methods. You will finish the course with a selection of beautiful and unique sculptural glass artworks to take home. What’s included: all teaching, materials and dust masks. What’s not included: your meals. Please bring small objects to take clay or wax molds, texts for inspiration and wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. 10% discount available for City & Guilds of London Art School students, alumni and staff. Gilding and Verre Églomisé 5-day short course - 30 June-4 July 2025 | City & Guilds of London Art School
Jun 30–Jul 4, 2025 (UTC+0)
London
Dates: 30 June-4 July 2025Time: 10:00 - 17:00Fee: £605 / Early Bird: £565Level: Beginners (18+ years)Tutor: Rian KanduthCreate your own stunning reflective artwork, by learning to apply and then etch in gold leaf on glass. After that we move on to oil gilding a small plaster cast, a technique you can go on to use on all sorts of surfaces, including plaster, wood and stone, indoors and out. Verre églomisé (gilding on glass) and oil gilding techniques have barely changed over the centuries and are amongst the most satisfying to learn. Absolutely fantastic course, very informative and brilliant teaching. Really found something I love and feel like I’m leaving with confidence in a new skill.’ Alice COURSE DESCRIPTIONAt the Art School, we teach our woodcarvers and our conservators a variety of techniques for the application of gold leaf to different surfaces and objects, old and new. In this short course, we introduce you to the specialist techniques of verre églomisé (gilding on glass) and oil gilding. The latter is suitable for use on external architectural features, including wood and stone, but in this course, you learn to apply it to plaster. Verre églomisé, the technique of gilding the reverse side of a piece of glass, is now most often found in museums and galleries, and employed by sign writers and artists. In this course you learn how to apply loose gold leaf to glass, and then to etch your design in gold leaf, finally sealing it with coloured enamel. Along the way, we show you how to make size, and some interesting techniques for etching. You’ll be amazed at the end result of your endeavours: a stunning reflective artwork! While the verre églomisé method is only ever used on glass, oil gilding is found on various substrates. Key to successful oil gilding is an understanding of how best to seal the substrate (though we will already have sealed the cast you’ll be working on) and working to timeframes (knowing when the size is perfect to then lay the leaf). Again, you learn how to apply loose gold leaf to plaster, using a gilder’s tip, and afterwards to ‘fault’ it, or identify where the gold has not taken. Getting it just right is tricky and requires guidance and a lot of practice. With the skills you learn during this fascinating week, you’ll have all the essentials you need to start practising gilding at home. What’s included: all teaching, and most of your tools and materials for gilding, including one book of gold leaf. Feel free to bring your own gilding equipment if you have some already. What isn’t included: your meals, and bring a 1” flat sable brush and a small round sable brush no 1 or 2 Please also wear clothes you don’t mind spoiling, or bring an apron. 10% discount available for City & Guilds of London Art School undergraduate, postgraduate and foundation students and alumni, and staff.
