Unlock Your Body's Wisdom: Somatic Practices for Personal Transformation | The Center SF

Apr 19, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
San Francisco
Yoga
Cultural Experiences
In this immersive workshop, you’ll uncover the transformative power of somatic work — an often overlooked, yet essential part of healing, growth, and personal transformation. Rooted in the connection between mind and body, somatic work uses intentional movement practices to help you release what’s holding you back and step into your true potential. In the first part of the workshop, Anna will guide you through the foundations of somatic work. You’ll explore the vital role of nervous system regulation, learn how stored emotions and trauma affect your body, and discover how combining somatic and mindset practices can accelerate your journey to freedom and fulfillment. You’ll gain practical tools to help you regulate and rewire your nervous system, release emotional baggage, and create a life that feels more balanced, joyful, and connected. In the second part, you’ll experience these tools firsthand as Anna leads you through a transformative somatic release practice. This deeply freeing process uses breath, sound, and movement — like shaking, punching a pillow, dancing, and intuitive expressions — to help you access and release pent-up emotions such as anger, sadness, or grief. What to bring: A journal and pen, and wear comfortable clothes for movement. If you’ve tried meditation, journaling, manifestation, affirmations, or other self-development tools but still feel stuck or unfulfilled, this workshop provides the missing piece to break free from self-sabotaging patterns and step into a more empowered, aligned version of yourself. Join Anna on a journey of self-discovery, healing, and transformation, and walk away feeling lighter, clearer, and more connected to yourself! Whether you’re seeking personal transformation, a deeper connection with your emotions, or simply a space to release and recenter, this workshop offers a powerful opportunity for growth and healing in a supportive and safe environment. Read what previous participants said about this workshop: “Anna’s amazing workshop on somatic practices for personal transformation was honestly life-changing. Over these three hours I was able to let go of so much fear, anger, and other negative emotions that had been stuck in my body. The theoretical part was super useful, and I took a ton of notes that I keep getting back to. But the practical part? Absolutely mind-blowing. The exercises and guided practices really helped me release and feel a new sense of freedom. It was such a powerful experience, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for some deep, meaningful transformation and personal growth.” “I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn from Anna’s wealth of embodied experience and knowledge about holistic health and somatic healing. She did an incredible job simplifying complex information and holding space for a transformational emotional release practice at The Center. Her energy, compassion, knowledge and experience created a beautiful opportunity to move through unprocessed anger, resentment, sadness and come back to my joy and gratitude in community. I got really clear on my desire to stay more in the present with my partner, rather than letting my fears from the past create tension.” “This workshop was so informative and transformational. Even within one session I noticed a difference in how I approach my emotions, and my capacity to feel through hard feelings. Not only was Anna so informative and educational, she was also able to create such a powerful and safe environment to feel safe and comfortable feeling whatever we needed to feel. I would recommend this workshop to anyone going through tough feelings, wanting to get more in touch with themselves, or even just wanting to recenter and ground themselves in their healing journey.” “Anna’s workshop was truly incredible. She has an exceptional talent for creating a safe space to explore the inner workings of yourself, while providing an atmosphere of openness with others. Coming into her second workshop, I knew very little about somatic work and practices, and Anna made it friendly for all levels. She showed me new ways to address myself in the past, present, and future, all of which can be integrated across several aspects of my life. I am so thankful!” Pricing: $40 early-bird $50 at the door NOTE: Please be on time for this workshop — doors will close at 3pm and there will be NO LATE ENTRIES! About your facilitator: Anna Bolender is a Somatic Embodiment & Mindset Coach, dancer, and dance teacher with a passion for wellness, holistic health, and movement. Her mission is to empower others to create a life of balance, fulfillment, and joy by reconnecting with their body, intuition, and purpose through simple yet transformative practices and rituals. Drawing on both mindfulness and somatic techniques, Anna helps people integrate daily habits and rituals that unlock their full potential and support their journey toward vibrant health and well-being. Through her coaching, she guides clients to break free from self-sabotaging patterns, come home to their true selves, and achieve their personal goals with clarity and confidence. They are an ArtSpan artist and outreach committee member, and a recent recipient of honorable mentions for LGBTQ+ artists from the John Sheridan Art Prize 2024. With an arts education from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Gonzalez learned about design and color theory through their background in theatrical productions. The art of storytelling is still very present in their work, though now mostly carved into a block of linoleum. On the art of Linoprinting they state, “I feel like Linoprinting or most relief printmaking is a satisfying dance between the embrace of positive and negative space. However life doesn’t exist only in the positive and negative, the spaces in between is where the beauty lies. How we choose to manipulate that space guides how we choose for our work to be seen.” More of Ray’s work can be found on Instagram @rays_prints Information Source: ARCH Art Supplies | eventbrite

SF Bicycle Coalition Adult Learn to Ride Class | Arguello Boulevard & Lincoln Way

Apr 19, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Cycling
Sports & Fitness
It's never too late to learn to bicycle! Instructors will work one-on-one to assist participants in learning the basics of balancing, starting, stopping and steering a bike, as well as proper helmet fit and adjustment. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class, but even if they don't, they will leave with tips to continue teaching themselves to ride. The first step will be balancing on your bicycle; instructors will first remove the pedals and lower the seat enough so that you can put both feet on the ground. You'll learn balance by taking longer and longer steps until you're gliding. Then, once you've got that down, we'll show you how to turn confidently and stop smoothly.Once you feel comfortable, we'll reinstall the pedals, so you can incorporate pedaling and learning to steer, and how to steer precisely in circles and figure-eights.You'll finish your lesson by learning how to shift gears so you can handle hills and prepare for more city riding. Please be sure you can sit on your bike seat with both feet flat on the ground. All participants MUST either bring a bike or rent a bike in advance. Bikes will not be available for rental at the class. If you don't have a bicycle, you will be contacted before the class with information on how to rent one. If you are unable to afford a bike rental (about $25), we have a limited budget to cover bike rentals for students. Please contact Qamuuqin (info below) about covering the cost. Please contact Qamuuqin Maxwell (qmaxwell@sfbike.org/‪415-323-0597) with any questions about this program. This class is part of the SFMTA’s Bicycle Safety Education program, presented in partnership with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. This project is made possible by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority through a grant of Proposition L Local Transportation Sales Tax Funds. San Francisco | Singles Event | No Speed Dating | Singles Night NO Chaotic | Financial District (Secret Location) We’ll send you the address after you RESERVE A SPOT here!

Apr 21, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
San Francisco
Cultural Experiences
Hello SINGLE from the Bay Area ! Thank you for joining this Singles Event. It’s not an awkward speed-dating session; it’s a Singles Night , and it’s definitely NOT chaotic . Our goal is to help you practice and improve your English or Spanish conversation skills with SINGLES and receive authentic feedback. You never know, perhaps you’ll meet another interesting SINGLE just like you! We don’t believe in love matching algorithms, we don’t believe in awkward speed dating, and we don’t believe in swiping endlessly on dating apps without ever meeting in person. We believe in natural conversation and genuine chemistry . In the worst-case scenario, you’ll improve your Spanish and English skills, make new friends, and become part of a cool startup in the Bay Area that strives to create real connections and expand your circle of friends and professional network. Thank you again for joining us to practice your Spanish or English in real-life settings with other SINGLES , and for participating in the alpha version of our startup, Socialmeet, the Best Meritocracy Club in the World , here in the Bay Area (San Francisco–Silicon Valley). This meetup is designed for you to practice SPANISH or ENGLISH with up to 7 other SINGLE STRANGERS at each table . There’s no supervision, no host, and no boring program, everything flows naturally according to your table’s dynamics. However, our founder, Marilyn , will be nearby in case you need extra assistance or if your group is feeling shy and needs help breaking the ice. Our Spanglish for SINGLES Session takes place every Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at different bars around the city. Afterwards, you have the chance to continue practicing your favorite language and mingle with other SINGLES from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at a nearby bar. We’ve conducted many experiments and found that it’s challenging to have focused conversations with more than 8 people at a table. Therefore, we will email you on Sunday, April 20th, at 11:00 p.m., and also communicate in the private chats on our platform: The Human Team, to let you know which table (and bar address) you’ll be at from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 21st, so you can practice Spanish or English in a smaller group. At 6:30 p.m., we’ll send out information (via email, Instagram, WhatsApp, and The Human Team) about which nearby bar we’ll move to for more practice from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There you can choose whom you’d like to practice with, not necessarily the people from your original table. This allows you to mingle with all the other SINGLES who want to join. Our goal is to grow this community every week with more SINGLES, so we can all have the opportunity to practice and improve together in real-life situations, with real questions and real feedback, learning more vocabulary from different kinds of people, while meeting new people both online (on our private social network, TheHumanTeam.org) and in person at bars around the Bay Area. With your ticket, you’ll have access to our private social network for the Bay Area on The Human Team, as well as our private group on Instagram for more details or to stay connected with people you meet during this or future sessions: https://www.instagram.com/j/AbaKFHxC1rXqxaoj/ If you don’t have Instagram or prefer WhatsApp, feel free to join us here: https://chat.whatsapp.com/LmohqOv9KbBEpXAfwgKGgi We look forward to seeing you soon, and we would love for you to follow our Instagram accounts: @Influential_Circle @Meritocracy.Club @TheHuman.Team @MarilynAlvaradoQ (our founder’s personal account) Whether you’re SINGLE, planning a trip to a Latin country, or already have a soulmate who speaks English or Spanish, this event is for you. Join us for laid-back conversations focused on romantic slang, pick-up lines, and flirting. We’ll send you the address after you purchase your ticket. Don’t worry about grammar, pronunciation, or your level of Spanish or English, this experience is all about having fun and practicing together. Language flows with practice, and there’s no judgment here. Everyone’s learning, so come have a great time! Information Source: SOCIALMEET MERITOCRACY CLUB | eventbrite

Circling: Relational Mindfulness and Authentic Relating | The Center SF

Apr 21, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
San Francisco
Cultural Experiences
Welcome to Circling! Over our 2.5 hours together, Morgan will guide you through a journey of deep presence in connection with each other. We will be noticing whatever arises within us as it relates to the others present, practice sharing our experiences in ways that take responsibility and invite others in, and learn to stay present and grow comfortable with whatever elements may come up. You will leave with new communication tools, a heightened sense of how to be with all of your states and others’ states, and feeling nourished by the depth, intimacy, and realness that’s possible with each other. What to expect: we will be sitting in a circle the whole time. We begin going around one by one, introducing ourselves with name, present state of being, and our intention for the evening; then we’ll do a warmup exercise or game that’s designed to either help us drop in more or acquire a certain tool for presence or expression; then we’ll either do both a focus circle (we choose one person to stay curious about) and a flow circle (it’s about all of us together as a group), or we’ll just do an extra long flow session. Close it off with another brief one-by-one go around of what we’re impacted by and taking away from our evening together. Schedule: we will close and lock the doors at 7:05, and will not allow latecomers, so as not to disturb the container we have already begun to create. Please get there a bit early so as to arrive and connect with a relaxed and ready state of mind. Bio: Morgan Klein is a Certified Circling Facilitator, Transformational Coach and NLP practitioner for leaders, Certified Hypnotherapist, and Family & Systemic Constellations facilitator, among other hats he wears. A twenty year veteran of the healing arts, he spent his 20’s as a Rolfer and bodyworker before discovering the power to change people via the greatest tool of all: the conversation. In addition to a thriving one-on-one coaching practice, he also regularly leads Circling classes in the Bay Area, and loves using what he’s learned, both personally and professionally, to help others become more alive. His Circling style is famous for a constant sense of awe and wonder, comfort with every dynamic possible, and a belief that given the right quality of presence, people can work their way out of anything. When he isn’t working with people conversationally, he can often be found swimming in rivers or hanging out with his nine year old. WARNING: This is a group where we practice radical authenticity and honesty. While we endeavor to communicate as kindly and consciously as possible, there is a chance you may become triggered. This is an excellent space to work through our triggers together, but if the thought of being challenged isn’t okay with you, we ask that you take care of yourself and not come. ** no refunds or exchanges are available for this event - you can sell or gift your ticket to a friend** Information Source: The Center SF | eventbrite

A singular book about the true meanings of strength and flexibility, about our ability to define who we are and who we might be.” —Ed Yong, New York Times bestselling author of An Immense World and I Contain Multitudes In On Muscle, Bonnie Tsui brings her signature blend of science, culture, immersive reporting, and personal narrative to examine not just what muscles are but what they mean to us. Cardiac, smooth, skeletal—these three different types of muscle in our bodies make our hearts beat; push food through our intestines, blood through our vessels, babies out the uterus; attach to our bones and allow for motion. Tsui also traces how muscles have defined beauty—and how they have distorted it—through the ages, and how they play an essential role in our physical and mental health. Tsui introduces us to the first female weightlifter to pick up the famed Scottish Dinnie Stones, then takes us on a 50-mile run through the Nevada desert that follows the path of escape from a Native boarding school—and gives the concept of endurance new meaning. She travels to Oslo, where cutting-edge research reveals how muscles help us bounce back after injury and illness, an important aspect of longevity. She jumps into the action with a historic Double Dutch club in Washington, D.C., to explain anew what Charles Darwin meant by the brain-body connection. Woven throughout are stories of Tsui’s childhood with her Chinese immigrant artist dad—a black belt in karate—who schools her from a young age in a kind of quirky, in-house Muscle Academy. On Muscle shows us the poetry in the physical, and the surprising ways muscle can reveal what we’re capable of. About Bonnie Tsui Bonnie Tsui is a longtime contributor to The New York Times and the bestselling author of Why We Swim , a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice and a Time magazine and NPR Best Book of the Year; it is currently being translated into ten languages. Bonnie is also the author of American Chinatown, which won the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature, and Sarah and the Big Wave, a children’s book about the first woman to surf Mavericks and a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection. Bestiaries of the More-Than-Humane / A Workshop by Jonathon Keats | City Lights Booksellers & Publishers

Join City Lights for a special noon-time event on Earth Day! Bestiaries of the More-Than-HumaneA Workshop by Jonathon Keats Participants are asked to arrive by 11:45 am. Supplies shall be provided. The event will be held in Keroauc Alley located between City Lights and Vesuvio Cafe. Through field observations and laboratory experimentation, biologists have shown that nonhuman primates evaluate fairness in terms similar to humans, and that rats manifest humanlike reciprocity in their social arrangements. Based on this evidence, researchers have made persuasive arguments that nonhuman animals are ethical beings. Might some predilections of nonhuman species be more ethically advanced than our own? Might their lifeways reveal areas in which humans have never even considered the need for principled behavior? More-than-human ethical principles have the potential to be transformational. They can inspire greater goodness in people and align values across taxa for the greater good of all on a local and planetary level. This two-hour hands-on workshop asks people to evaluate the lifeways of animals and plants and fungi they know personally, deriving guidance that might be applied to the human domain. Lessons are inscribed in hand-crafted books inspired by medieval bestiaries. Participants are invited to add their books to the Library of the More-Than-Humane, an online repository hosted by the University of Arizona. Jonathon Keats is an experimental philosopher, artist, and writer whose transdisciplinary projects explore all aspects of society, adapting methods from the sciences and the humanities. He is a research associate at the University of Arizona’s College of Fine Arts, a visiting scholar at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Biofrontiers Institute and San José State University’s CADRE Laboratory for New Media, a fellow at the Berggruen Institute, a research fellow at the Highland Institute and the Long Now Foundation, principal philosopher at Earth Law Center, and an artist-in-residence at the SETI Institute and Biosphere 2.
