Learn to make elevated, professional-quality meals in your own kitchen with over 100 creative, seasonal recipes from Hailee Catalano
Growing up cooking the Sunday gravy, meatballs, and pasta alongside her Italian American grandmother, Hailee Catalano developed a huge passion for food. This passion led her to the Culinary Institute of America, and then to cooking in restaurants. But somewhere along the way, Hailee started to miss the home cooking that made her fall in love with food in the first place. Restaurants made it seem like beautifully made food was too difficult to recreate at home.
In
By Heart
, she presents over 100 restaurant-quality recipes designed to be made in your home kitchen. You'll find seasonal pastas (
Pasta alla Norcina with Roasted Squash
), veggie-forward recipes designed to make the most of your CSA box (
Caponata with Dried Cherries and Green Olives
), simple meat dishes (
Roast Chicken with Red Wine Vinegar and Honey
) breads (
Hearty Seeded Rye Bread
), butters (
Calabrian Chile Honey Butter
), condiments (
Chicago-Style Fennel Giardiniera
), perfect beach sandwiches (
Brie and Butter Sandwich with Shallot-y Frisée
), simple sweets (
Malted Milk Butter Cookies
), and so much more.
Inspired by her professional training and love of seasonal cooking, Hailee includes details on how to keep a calm kitchen, navigate a farmers market, make your own broths and the perfect sourdough loaf, and plan out a Friday Night Dinner menu. Carefully crafted from the heart, this is a book you'll return to again and again.

Dividing Lines | Mark Taper Auditorium - Central Library
May 8, 2025 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
Thursday, May 8 at 7:00PMDividing Lines: How Transportation Infrastructure Reinforces Racial InequalityACLU President Deborah N. Archer In conversation with Sister Helen PrejeanFrom an eminent legal scholar and the president of the ACLU, an essential account of how transportation infrastructure―from highways and roads to sidewalks and buses―became a means of protecting segregation and inequality after the fall of Jim Crow. Our nation’s transportation system is crumbling highways are collapsing, roads are pockmarked, and commuter trains are unreliable. But as acclaimed scholar and ACLU president Deborah N. Archer warns in Dividing Lines, before we can think about rebuilding and repairing, we must consider the role race has played in transportation infrastructure, from the early twentieth century and into the present day. Drawing on a wealth of sources, including interviews with people who now live in the shadow of highways and other major infrastructure projects, Archer presents a sweeping, national account―from Atlanta, and Houston to Indianapolis and New York City―of our persistent divisions. With immense authority, she examines the limits of current Civil Rights laws, which can be used against overtly racist officials but are less effective in addressing deeper, more enduring, structural challenges. But Archer remains hopeful, and in the final count describes what a just system would look like and how we can achieve it.

North Hollywood
HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. Writers Bloc presents a celebration of fiction from The New Yorker: its first 100 years. With fiction editor Deborah Treisman and George Saunders, and readings by actors. For 100 years, we have turned to The New Yorker for deep investigative reporting, broad profiles of those in politics and culture here and abroad, indisputably the best cartoons on the planet, humor, arts criticism, and more. It simply set the standard for excellence. For 100 years, its fiction has been a touchstone in the field of international letters. In celebration of the magazine’s 100th year, The New Yorker has published a huge trove of short stories that graced its pages, often launching the careers of some of the superb novelists and short story writers of our time, and of another, earlier time. Isaac Bashevis Singer. Shirley Jackson. Annie Proulx. J.D. Salinger. Saul Bellow. Philip Roth. And so many more, including George Saunders, and stories published recently. How to choose the lucky stories that made the cut? Deborah Treisman, the fiction editor of The New Yorker, edited the glorious new book, A Century of Fiction in The New Yorker: 1925-2025. She and novelist George Saunders discuss the magazine’s stories and the selection process. Actors will read a few selections from this beautiful book. Actors to be announced. Limited parking onsite. We recommend rideshares and carpooling. Please allow time to find parking. Did you know that you can make a fully tax-deductible donation? As a nonprofit organization, Writers Bloc Presents relies on support from people like you. Here’s what I found based on available data from AllTrails, Great Runs, and LA Parks resources, plus safety considerations. Trail Rating: Easy to Moderate Difficulty: Easy Sections: Flat areas near Crystal Springs Dr. and Fern Dell Dr. are beginner-friendly, with wide, paved or packed-dirt paths. Perfect for walkers or slow joggers (e.g., 0-2% incline). Moderate Sections: Some trails (like parts of the Griffith Park Loop) have gentle climbs, averaging 100-200 feet elevation gain over 3.1 miles (3-5% incline). Rated “moderate” due to uneven terrain and gradual slopes. Hard: No “hard” inclines on a basic 5K route—steep trails (e.g., Mt. Hollywood, 10-15% incline) are avoidable unless you choose them. Distance Suitability: 3.1 miles is achievable for first-timers with training (your 10-week guide fits perfectly!). Walking takes ~45-60 min, run/walk ~30-45 min. Inclines to Note Fern Dell to Firebreak Trail (if used): ~100-ft gain over 0.5 miles (4-6% incline)—gradual but noticeable. Wide path, shaded.Crystal Springs Loop (near Ranger Station): Mostly flat (<2% incline), with one short 50-ft rise near picnic areas—easy but watch footing on dirt.Avoidable Steep Spots: Trails toward Observatory or Hollywood Sign have 10-15% inclines—stick to lower loops for safety.Safety Guidelines : Trail Safety Guidelines: Difficulty: Our 5K route is rated easy to moderate—flat with some gentle hills (up to 200-ft gain total). Walkers welcome! Inclines: Expect gradual slopes (3-5%) on packed dirt/paved paths. One short 50-ft rise near Crystal Springs—take it slow if needed. Tips: (1)Wear sturdy shoes—uneven spots possible (roots, rocks). (2)Hydrate: Bring water; stations available but spaced out. (3)Pace yourself: Walk breaks are okay—listen to your body! Health Alert: Stop if dizzy, breathless, or unwell—first aid on-site. Stay Safe: Stick to marked trails (25 mph traffic nearby), no open fires/alcohol, dogs on leash (if bringing). Call Park Rangers (323-644-6661) or 911 in emergencies.
