Mar 27, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
Third Place Books is thrilled to welcome Dr. Oliver L. Haimson to our Seward Park store! Dr. Haimson will be discussing his new book Trans Technologies, which describes what happens when trans people take technology design into their own hands. Haimson, whose research into gender transition and technology has defined this area of study, draws on transgender studies and his own in-depth interviews with more than 100 creators of technology—including apps, games, health resources, extended reality systems, and supplies designed to address challenges trans people face—to explain what trans technology is and to explore its present possibilities and limitations, as well as its future prospects. He will be joined in conversation by Sasha Winter. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Trans Technologies . . .Mainstream technologies often exclude or marginalize transgender users. Trans Technologies describes what happens when trans people take technology design into their own hands. Oliver L.
Haimson surveys the landscape of trans technologies to reveal the design processes that brought these technologies to life, and to show how trans people often must rely on community, technology, and the combination of the two to meet their basic needs and challenges. His work not only identifies the role of trans technology in caring for individuals within the trans community but also shows how trans technology creation empowers some trans people to create their own tools for navigating the world. Articulating which trans needs and challenges are currently being addressed by technology and which still need to be addressed; describing how trans technology creators are accomplishing this work; examining how privilege, race, and access to resources impact which trans technologies are built and who may be left out; and highlighting new areas of innovation to be explored, Trans Technologies opens the way to meaningful social change. Dr. Oliver Haimsonis an Assistant Professor at University of Michigan School of Information and author of Trans Technologies (MIT Press, 2025). He conducts social computing research focused on envisioning and designing trans technologies. See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. About When We Grow Up.. . .Clare is supposed to be the grown-up one. Married to the love of her life, with a major deal for her first novel, she has everything she thought she wanted. So then why does it all feel so wrong? When she agrees to a weeklong vacation in Hawai'i with five of her oldest friends as they each approach thirty, she is hoping for an escape with the people who know her best. There is Jessie, who won’t stop talking about her new boyfriend; Mac, trying to pretend he hasn’t outgrown the group; Kyle, the eternal peacemaker; and Renzo, who brought them all together but keeps picking fights. And then, of course, there’s Liam, who Clare has barely seen since high school but somehow can’t get out of her head—or her bed.
But when a terrifying news alert shatters their peace, it becomes harder to ignore how much the world has changed since they were teenagers. As the resentments and tensions that have always simmered just beneath the surface begin to boil, Clare must ask if their shared history is enough to sustain their friendships, or if growing up might mean letting go.

BONUS: The paperback edition of BRING ME YOUR MIDNIGHT features an exclusive bonus chapter! On the magical island of the Witchery, a coven controls the restless sea…but their power is failing. Tana Fairchild's life has been planned out since the moment she was born: she is to marry the governor's son and secure an unprecedented alliance between the witches of her island home and the mainlanders who fear the power across the sea. For years, Tana's coven has released their excess magic into the ocean during the full moon, content to use their gifts for smaller magic, like potent teas or alluring perfumes. But when Tana misses the midnight ritual, she fears her power will consume her…until she meets Wolfe. Wolfe is from a secret coven, one that practices dark magic and refuses to dull their abilities in accordance to the alliance between the Witchery and the mainland. To help her, he teaches Tana forbidden magic. A magic that makes her feel powerful and alive for the first time. As the sea grows more violent, her coven loses control of the currents, a danger that puts everyone at risk. Tana can't let the Witchery down…and she also cannot give up Wolfe and the way his wild magic makes her feel. But if she doesn't choose a path soon—duty or love—she'll lose everything to the sea. Maya Angela Smith presents 'Ne me quitte pas' | Third Place Books
Mar 6, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
Maya Angela Smith, follows the long and varied journey of Jacques Brel’s classic song “Ne me quitte pas,” showing how it gains shifting artistic cultural significance as it travels across languages, geographies, genres, and generations.Third Place Books is thrilled to welcome back Dr. Maya Angela Smith for a discussion of her new book, Ne me quitte pas, in which Smith follows the classic song’s long and varied journey, from Jacques Brel’s iconic 1966 performance on French television to Nina Simone’s cover to Shirley Bassey’s English-language version to its contemporary manifestations in popular culture. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Click here for more about our COVID-19 policies for in-person events. Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Ne me quitte pas . .In 1959, Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel wrote and performed “Ne me quitte pas” (Don’t leave me), a visceral and haunting plea for his lover to come back. As a teenager, Maya Angela Smith was so captivated by Nina Simone’s powerful 1965 cover of the song that it inspired her to be a French professor. In Ne me quitte pas, Smith follows the classic song’s long and varied journey, from Brel’s iconic 1966 performance on French television to Simone’s cover to Shirley Bassey’s English-language version (“If You Go Away”) to its contemporary manifestations in popular culture. Throughout, Smith shows that as the song travels across languages, geographies, genres, and generations, it accumulates shifting artistic and cultural significance as each listener creates their own meaning. Maya Angela Smith is a sociolinguist, a professor in the Department of French and Italian Studies, and the Associate Dean for Equity, Justice, and Inclusion in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington. She began her career primarily focused on the intersection of race, language, and identity among members of the Francophone African diaspora, such as in her book, Senegal Abroad (Wisconsin, 2019), winner of the Modern Language Association’s French and Francophone Studies book prize. Recent writing continues exploring this intersection but through the lens of music. Her upcoming book, Ne me quitte pas (Duke, 2025), analyzes how “Ne me quitte pas”—a text, a piece of cultural production written in a specific context, and a work of mass/popular art—travels across languages, geographies, genres, and generations by using Nina Simone’s single as a point of departure. Meanwhile, Reclaiming Venus: The Many Lives of Alvenia Bridges (Rising Action Press, 2024), addresses the systemic silencing of Black women’s voices in musical history by telling the story of Bridges’s personal journey when crossing paths with a wide variety of people in the entertainment industry, from long-term working relationships with the Rolling Stones and Roberta Flack to momentary yet extraordinary encounters with Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, and Tina Turner. Smith is also a visual artist and an avid hiker. New Achievement! Total, Utter Failure. You failed a quest less than five minutes after you received it. Now that's talent. Surviving in a multilevel dungeon that also happens to be the set of the galaxy's most watched game show has taught Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, that there's only one thing they can count on apart from each other: they never know what's coming next. And this floor is no exception. A floating fortress occupied by warrior gnomes. A castle made of sand. A derelict submarine guarded by malfunctioning machines. A haunted crypt surrounded by lethal traps. It was supposed to be easy. One bubble. Four castles. Fifteen days. Capture each one, and the stairwell is unlocked. Here's the thing. It's never easy. Going it alone is not an option this time, so Carl and his team must rely on the help of the low-level, I-can't-believe-these-idiots-are-still-alive crawlers trapped in the bubble with them. But can they be trusted? Welcome, Crawlers. Welcome to the fifth floor of the dungeon. This is a ticketed event and registration is required. The first collection from comic artist Hannah Hillam poses the question: What if our cats were responsible for taking care of us for a change?
Following an unwitting human who finds herself in a world where humans' and cats' roles have reversed, Cat People examines the special and inscrutable relationship we have with our feline companions, revealing the delightful absurdities of both species along the way.
Only the keen eyes of cats could so sharply examine the most bizarre human behaviors we don't think twice about, including grooming, eating, sleeping, working, and competing with other humans for attention and territory. By flipping the script and casting humans in the role of pet, Hannah Hillam spins an unforgettable tail of the unique love and often baffling coexistence between cats and people.
