The Dublin Jazz Co-op Presents Zoe Basha | The Cobblestone

Dublin

Arts
The Dublin Jazz Co-op Presents Zoe Basha Curated by Jenna Harris Zoé Basha is a musician, composer and carpenter, of French and American origins. Based between Ireland and the traveling life for over a decade, Zoé blends traditional singing with jazz and blues. Her original pieces and traditional songs explore the crossover between the sway of Appalachian mountain songs, the fervour and solemn ornamentation of Irish traditional songs, and the pulse of American ragtime through playful, syncopated guitar and a booming voice, reminiscent of an old jazz record you can’t quite put your finger on. Coming from a background of traveling North America and Europe by hitchhiking, hopping freight trains and taking the scenic route with rust-bucket vans, she played music in the streets for years. Following the release of an album with vocal harmony trio Rufous Nightjar in March of last year, Zoé will be releasing her debut solo album ‘Gamble’ in April 2025. The album was recorded at Black Mountain Studios in Dundalk, with a band of esteemed musicians adding organ, upright bass, fiddle, dobro and drums, to voice and guitar. For this performance as part of the Dublin Jazz Co-op, Zoé Basha will be accompanied by Ultan Lavery on organ/keys, and Jim Christie on drums; the trio will be playing a mixture of original songs, standards, and some hidden gems of traditional jazz of the early 1900s. Born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh in 1915, she initially studied in Dublin and then in London, joining her sister Valerie at the Royal College of Music where she studied piano with the Australian pianist, Arthur Benjamin, and composition with two of England's leading composers, Herbert Howells and Ralph Vaughan Williams. During the years of WW2, Joan and Valerie made a name for themselves as a two-piano duo with regular broadcasts on the BBC. Many of Joan’s attractive two-piano works were composed for the sisters’ broadcasts, incorporating a distinct and unique Irish idiom. The first group of three pieces on the programme are folksong arrangements while the last group: ‘Buttermilk Point’, ‘The Bard of Lisgoole’ and ‘The Humours of Carrick’ are deftly constructed to resemble Irish airs. Joan’s ‘Sonatina’ is composed in a more universal and contemporary vein. Also included is ‘Moy Mell’ by Arnold Bax – frequently performed by the Trimbles in concert and broadcasts, while Arthur Benjamin’s ‘Jamaican Rumba’ was dedicated to the sisters after a trip to the Caribbean. Joan gravitated naturally towards song-writing and three of her songs are included in the programme, ‘My Grief on the Sea’, a setting of one of the Love songs of Connaught translated from the Irish by Douglas Hyde; also, ‘Green Rain’ a setting of poetry by Mary Webb and the character song, ‘Girl’s Song’ with words by Wilfrid Wilson Gibson about a visit to the local fair. Join our Script Writing WorkshopTrailer For A Nation is a script writing workshop developed and taught by Kialy Thingang, a multdisciplinary Glasglow-based artist. The workshop explores how national identity is constructed, mythologised, and compressed into simplified narratives, just like a movie trailer. Inspired by Kialy’s film Neyinka and the Silver Gong (2024), participants will examine how speculative fiction can reimagine erased histories and challenge dominant national myths. Through the sharing of Kialy’s research and some creative exercises, participants will craft their own “trailers” for alternate histories, exploring the way film marketing techniques mirror the selective storytelling of national identity. The workshop will take place on Sunday, the 30th of March from 4 -5:30 pm at the Fumbally Stables, loft. This workshop programme is for Black people and people of colour who are new to writing. Including those who do not identify as writers but who have an interest in pursuing Registration is necessary for attendance. Information Source: Sistren Space | eventbrite
