Kung Chi Shing Experimental musician, composer, music activist, and sound artist Kung Chi Shing has long been one of Hong Kong’s boldest sonic experimenters. Combining elements of pop and classical music with an emphasis on improvisation, he uses music as an artistic tool for social commentary, examining how public spaces are affected by music. In 2022, he was appointed head of contemporary performance, performing arts at the West Kowloon Cultural District. Born and raised in Hong Kong, he studied classical music and composition at the University of Hawaii and the University of Pennsylvania, where one of his professors was the legendary avant-garde composer George Crumb. His first job in Hong Kong, from 1987, was as head of the dance department music program at the Academy for Performing Arts; that was also the year he launched possibly his best-known venture, the theatrical music ensemble The Box, alongside writer Peter Suart, which had an outsized impact on the city’s experimental performance scene. He established the Kung Music Workshop in 2008 and founded his Street Music Series the following year, through which he has staged over 150 concerts on Hong Kong street corners. In the soft light before sunrise, a beautiful piece of Aboriginal art will illuminate the sails of the Sydney Opera House, reflected in the waters of our timeless harbour. This dawn is more than just a sunrise. It is a moment to draw courage and inspiration from one another, and to commit to making Australia a united, inclusive place for all who call it home. As our two flags rise together on the top of Sydney Harbour Bridge to mark the dawn of Australia Day, let us also rise and greet the day with respect.

The WugulOra ceremony symbolizes how Australia's peoples embrace each other in a spirit of unity, a special ritual passed down from generation to generation, providing purification and healing for new beginnings and bringing new inspiration for our future. WugulOra is a celebration of the culture of the Gadigal people of the Eora nation through dance, song and storytelling. Aboriginal artists showcase the richness and significance of their culture in a combination of historical and contemporary performances. You will also have the opportunity to hear speeches from the Premier of New South Wales and the Governor of New South Wales, as well as the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council. In the morning light on January 26, we will sing the Australian national anthem in Eora and English, bearing witness to our history and shared future together.
