Front and Centre: Women of the North's Playwriting Symposium | The Brian Friel Theatre
May 23–May 25, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Belfast
Front and Centre: Women of the North's Playwriting Symposium At a time of increasing challenges for the arts in Northern Ireland—where funding is shrinking, and a clear arts policy remains absent—female-identifying and non-binary playwrights, particularly those from working-class backgrounds, face even greater barriers. Despite the undeniable talent emerging from this region, including playwrights like Stacey Gregg and Lisa McGee, the lack of main stage productions for their work is striking. This symposium is a call to action. Focusing on playwriting as both craft and career, it will open up vital conversations, explore constructive strategies, and showcase fresh talent. Expect a dynamic mix of staged readings, works in progress, and critical discussions—bringing together emerging playwrights, academics, and industry professionals. Join us for an inspiring day of creative exploration, thought-provoking panels, and open conversation. Whether you're a writer, artist, academic, or theatre enthusiast, your voice is welcome. This event is led by playwright and theatre-maker Karis Kelly in collaboration with the Drama Department at QUB. Register here for the programme of panels and talks. The overview of the schedule is as follows: Friday 23rd May, 1pm-6pm Sarturday 24th May, 11am-2.15pm Sunday 25th May, 11am-5.30pm Refreshments included throughout each day. Please note that tickets for panels and talks are free; you will need to book separately to attend the staged readings and scratch performances for which there is a small charge. 📩 For more information, contact frontandcentreni@gmail.com We are grateful to Belfast City Council and to Queen’s University Belfast for their support for this event.

TRIFLED - A raw remount | The Brian Friel Theatre
May 24, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Belfast
TRIFLED - A raw remount by Caitlin Magnall-Kearns After a highly successful, sell-out production at Dublin Theatre Festival last year we are delighted to present this script in hand, semi-staged performance of TRIFLED - directed by the writer. Jen is a bolshy young Northern Irish woman who is housebound with agoraphobia and trying to make the best of a sticky situation. Her days revolve around watching daytime TV and filming niche pornographic content for her profile on OnlyFans, until one day when a heartbroken English university lecturer lands on her doorstep. Based, in part, off the writers experience living with agoraphobia TRIFLED charts their blossoming friendship, in this brutally honest, darkly comedic two-hander about sex work, mental illness and custard. Bawdy, line-crossing, occasionally moving and always fun. - The Irish Times Audience Advisory/Trigger Warnings Contains strong language and references to sex and mental illness. Front & Centre are delighted to be able to showcase these studio shows by women and non-binary writers from Northern Ireland. Both pieces have enjoyed major successes at festivals in the UK and Ireland and as far afield as Australia. They’re examples of the excellence of craft emerging from the region. In presenting these works, we hope that arts institutes and buildings will engage and give the work much deserved, longer runs here in the North. However - a note on the trap of studio shows! Keeping women on small studio stages, not allowing them to graduate to main stages, seriously damages their career and earning power. It pushes them out of the industry as they can’t earn a living viably. This is particularly pronounced for working class writers. Longterm, we’d like to use our platform to propel these artists from studio shows to mainstages. Please note: Presale will end on the event day at 3pm. From that point onwards, tickets will only be available on the door, paying by card. This event has kindly been supported by Queen’s University and Belfast City Council. For other studio shows at the Symposium: The Daughters of Róisín by Aoibh Johnson Photo by Al Craig from original production at The New Theatre. Audience react to the original production at The New Theatre. Caitlin Magnall-Kearns is an award-winning writer from Belfast with a passion for telling unheard and underrepresented stories about fatness, queerness and disability with warmth, humour and wit. Following on from making it to the top 1% of applicants in 2023, she was selected last year from over 1300 people to be a part of the BBC’s Comedy Collective 2024 and was also a member of BBC Belfast Voices 2024. Her radio drama Safe Space produced by FABEL for Radio 4 aired in January 2025, and was a pick of the week in The Observer, The Sunday Times, The Mail on Sunday and the Radio Times. She is currently developing a sitcom with Hat Trick Productions, along with several other projects across stage, screen and radio. She is represented by Kate Haldane Management.

Grief in my own Words | Barefoot Body & Soul
May 25, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Belfast
We all experience grief and we all experience it in different ways. Sometimes it is so hard to explain and to understand for ourselves and then explaining to others is so tricky. It can be so overwhelming and confusing. This workshop is a time to come together for an afternoon to look at the words that capture and express your feelings . In a gentle kind supportive space ,as a small group thorugh the written word and our stories we shall explore grief, love and loss and all that happens on the way.
It is a guided workshop for anyone who has experienced loss, all you need to bring is yourself and your thoughts, maybe a notebook and maybe your favourite pen . Through gentle guided steps we shall wriite and talk together. it is a place to be heard a soft landing in a world that can feel upside down.
A little about me :
I was born and raised in rural somerset England . A person who sought wild spaces. At the age of 16 I wanted to work with people who were at the end of life or whose lives were affected by loss . Steps later after a btec in social care . A degree in drama . A year volunteering in India . Some amazing other adventures including a story telling festival in Slovenia. A Community project in Egypt . I trained as a drama therapist, i worked in prison using theatre . Life moved from London to Bristol. Setting up a project for children whose parents mis-used substances. The world changed again and I found myself in Belfast. Setting up an award winning project for children whose parents had cancer within a large cancer charity. Winning women of the year, family service of the year and speaking at conferences in Italy - Dublin . Completing a tedx talk writing papers with university of Ulster . And all the time climbing mountains paddling great rivers seeking wild spaces and being mum and along the way experinced some heart breaking loss. Qualifying as a funeral celebrant in 2017 . Taking the leep into being a consultant and running my own practice . Taking life in all its beauty and ugliness too,and supporting others through creativity to tell their story find that vulnerability and to create connection.

Wretch
by Clare Duffy and Grace Kully
Wretch is a play about stalking and harassment and the aftershocks that so often come with seeking freedom, but are rarely talked about. Wretch is our call-to-action, our wake up call, and our supportive hug to other victims. This play exposes what harassment can look like in all its subtle forms, how the justice system so often fails survivors, and why support is a necessity for years after. When we say that this is important, we aren’t asking you to believe us. We are telling you.
Clare Duffy is an Irish writer and performer across stage and screen. She has most recently been commissioned by BBC Radio 4. She holds an MA from the Seamus Heaney Centre and Queens University Belfast.
Grace Kully) is a rare disease advocate. She moved to Belfast from rural New Jersey to study Creative Writing at the Seamus Heaney Centre. Friend of Dorothy
by Gillian Pencavel
Telling the story of the short life of Hollywood costumer Kent Warner, the man who found Dorothy's ruby slippers in a dusty warehouse in 1970, but whose legacy is so much more. From almost single-handedly creating a black market for movie memorabilia - stuff the studios threw away - to his extravagant parties, his great talent, and his tragic death of AIDS, Friend Of Dorothy celebrates the man, not just his shoes.
With a Masters in Musical Theatre Writing from Goldsmiths University London, Gillian moved to Belfast in 2017 and has since written By A Thread, a one man show which received a rehearsed reading in 2023; an original musical, Golden Bricks And Ruby Shoes (music by Patrick Moore) which had a WiP performance in 2019 and received ACNI funding in 2020; and taken part in the BBC’s Hothouse programme in 2021.
Natural
by Alice Malseed
Alice is pregnant. Very pregnant. And like any artist would, she's exploiting this personally life-changing epoch for her research project -
Natural.
Natural explores the context, mood and ethics of having children within our current climate.Through research, she is looking back at one hundred years of child rearing by zooming in on three generations of women and their supposed 'choice' in this area.At this scratch she is presenting a very raw and rough extract - her, on stage, reading some text. She is using the biography as a starting point to look at the government's obsession with 'hard working families', the rise of pronatalism, trad-wives, and ultimately questioning whether or not women really do have a choice at all....
Alice is a theatre maker, writer and producer based in Belfast. She is currently part of Six In The Attic with I.T.I. As well as theatre, Alice is working on her debut novel
Double Sunrise.

Produced by Paul Willemsen (Beans & Fatback, Lefties Soul Connection, Michelle David & The True-tones), the resulting EP
Cleaned Out
debuted in
2014
. Later that year, the German funk and soul label TrampRecords released their debut single –
Footprints In The Sand /Cleaned Out
– delivering deserved international airplay for The Tibbs.
Two years later, famous Italian label Record Kicks released The Tibbs’ first LP,
Takin’ Over.
The first single from the album,
Next Time/ The Story Goes
– again produced by Paul Willemsen – received critical acclaim on radio stations throughout England, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Canada and Australia.
Though the talent was obvious much earlier, the release of
Takin' Over
delivered the band far richer rewards. Playing sold-out venues in both Milan and Frankfurt, The Tibbs’ profile rose further still with wonderful festival performances in Germany and Hungary, followed by a successful sold-out tour of Spain. Throughout this period, more new music was being created; the
Lies
45 released in December
2017
, and six months later,
This Strange Effect
was included on the celebratory
Record Kicks 15th
compilation album.
After some deliberation, in late
2018
Elsa decided to follow her heart and focus on a solo career. The Tibbs duly began their search for a truly worthy successor, bringing astonishing vocalist
Roxanne Hartog
and the band together for the first time. With a selection of incredible new tunes and an album (
Another Shot Fired
) drawing fantastic reviews, The Tibbs played sold-out shows in The Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Spain.
In
January 2024
their latest album
Keep It to Yourself
came out, a true tour deforce that left listeners awe-inspired, foot-tapping and heart-soaring. On this 12-track album The Tibbs once again prove that the passionate sounds of the past can have a fresh and vibrant place in the music of today. Whether you're a devoted soul aficionado or new to the genre, just get ready for a musical journey that will revive your spirit!
